you ever wondered how come são paulo the biggest city in brazil the americas and the southern hemisphere is so much more populated than rio de janeiro the 2nd largest city in brazil the são paulo main city has a population of about 11 million while the entire metropolitan area has a population of over 21 million meanwhile rio has a population of about 6 million with about 11 million in the expanded metropolitan area that s a huge population gap between the 1st and 2nd largest cities for a country to have the reason why is mostly in the geography of the brazilian coastline if you look at the topographical map of brazil left compared to the population density map right you will notice a specific pattern most of the population is concentrated along the coastline with the southeast being the most populous and also mountainous region if you look at a map of the southeast you can notice something rio de janeiro is located directly on the coast while são paulo is a little farther inland you ve also probably seen beautiful pictures of rio de janeiro like this where the coastline is closely lined with lush green mountains those mountains are why the southeast brazilian coastline is lined with a mountain range called serra do mar which acts as a physical barrier for coastal cities to grow it means they can only really grow sideways along the coastline and not so far inland however if you travel up and inland past the serra do mar there is a plateau a flat vast piece of land with essentially no hard limit to how far out a city can grow this plateau is where são paulo is located without the physical barrier of the serra do mar são paulo was able to grow way larger than rio it is located close enough to the coast especially the port of santos where global trade is still easily accessible but without the limiting factor of the serra do mar now you know why there is such a huge population gap between the 1st and 2nd biggest cities in brazil ryan sometimes a really cool way to it s located along the coastline which is where over half of the brazilian population resides and then in the 1950s your crazy president decides that the capital city should be changed could it be to they have to import workers from other parts of the country because there s literally not enough people living nearby to build an entire city from scratch these workers are enduring awful conditions because they re making like 2 bucks per week and it s also a billion fucking degrees in the cerrado okay and the city s going to be designed like this there s going to be the main government buildings and stuff which are going to be arranged to look like a plane from above cool everyone else is going to live on a fucking grid where all of the addresses look like x y coordinates the end result is a city that feels like it s an outdoor backrooms with insane water supply problems because it s located on a high altitude area where the rainfall just slides right off it s also completely dry for 6 months of the year the urban development is also fucked up because it was originally designed for only about 500k people and now 3 million live there an initially planned city with now uncontrolled urban sprawl because it s way exceeded its planned capacity and guess what a lot of the politicians don t even live there they just fly to brasília when they need to then go back home to where they actually live mostly são paulo and rio congratulations you have now discovered the new capital city of brazil ryan sometimes more details that i previously left to the tags but should go in the main post too about 6 of the population excluding brasília lives in the midwest today in the 1950s that number was less than 3 at the time it was the most sparsely populated region in the country today it only loses out to the north which is only that sparsely populated because 80 of it is taken up by the amazon rainforest and the state goiás that brasília is located already had a capital city of its own called goiânia which is actually a really cool city with 10x more culture than that abomination will ever have brasília is located 1200km from the coast and it is so isolated from major cities for people from there and other major cities to travel to government buildings and protest whatever was going on at the time but with brasília s inauguration that was made close to impossible perhaps it is or isn t a coincidence that only 4 years after brasília s inauguration brazil suffered a coup that installed a military dictatorship for 21 years to travel from são paulo to rio it s about 6 hours by car and there have been major roads between the two cities for a very long time to go from rio to brasília by car it s about 20 hours today at the time it was almost impossible because there weren t as many major road connecting brasília to the major coastal cities like são paulo and rio and at the time commercial flights just weren t accessible to the general population so accessing it by land was incredibly difficult if not impossible the brazilian midwest is highly urbanized like 90 of the population lives in urban areas and it s also huge so there s a lot of people concentrated in the big cities and then the rest is mostly just farmland it was also late to being colonized bc the portuguese concentrated their colonization efforts along the coastlines it was colonized 200 years after the coasts amazon bc they didn t really know how to get there didn t know what was going on over there so they left it alone until they realized there was gold there btw goiânia has a
