raleigh running club revives old running track sparks big plans wral com raleigh running club revives old running track sparks big plans a running track that sat unused for years at the governor morehead school for the blind is ready for runners thanks to a youth running club that set it all in motion posted 5 14 2026 1 44 03 pm updated 5 16 2026 12 00 09 am related running lifestyle track and field good news run only on wral raleigh youth running club revives track at governor morehead school for the blind by renee chou wral anchor reporter a running track that sat unused for years at the governor morehead school for the blind is ready for runners all thanks to a youth running club that set it all in motion the raleigh fireballs is a nonprofit club made up of dozens of runners ages 8 to 15 its runners were looking for a track to regularly practice and found it to be a challenge in wake county other wral top stories we put in a lot of requests either through wake county schools or some of the private schools said fireballs coach erin taylor they have their own sports programs so it s really hard to make it work during the time we need it to practice and when they re actually even available this season the team has been running at reedy creek middle school and local parks but they wanted something permanent it s really hard for parents that we have to keep moving locations said fireballs coach teresa carver 2026 raleigh fireballs team carver said she used google earth to look for running tracks in wake county she discovered one at the governor morehead school for the blind in raleigh on the corner of western boulevard and ashe avenue she reached out to school officials about the team s request in february school officials told her the track hadn t been used for several years the track was overrun with grass anthills and tree roots we have wanted to get our track back up to speed so our own students can use it but we just haven t had the funding to do that said gms superintendent kathy segers school officials did say if the fireballs could find a way to make the track usable again the raleigh fireballs would get priority to use it for practice the fireballs reached out and were able to secure donations martin marietta donated 320 tons of their mined granite screenings for the track surface s t wooten volunteered their trucks to transport the crushed rock from the quarry to the track carver s husband chris carver used a skid steer to smooth out the track above governor morehead school track unused and overgrown below revived track after donated supplies and labor coaches have a vision for the space they would eventually like to add benches and shade structures to host meets the governor morehead school said it plans to bring back its track team once it s renovated and usable again we will reinstate our track program and get our kids back into running said gms athletic director shawn whitney he explained that morehead school had been one of many state schools that competed in the eastern athletic association for the blind but during and after covid 19 nobody took part in the sports programs and its outdoor track was never used i m excited to get people out here again said whitney whitney said long term plans include developing a multipurpose field within the track to support activities such as blind soccer with the united states preparing to field a blind soccer team for the first time for the 2028 paralympics in los angeles whitney said this could position gms as a leader in adaptive sports programming not just for its students but for the blind and visually impaired community in the area runners with the fireballs said they re excited to have one dedicated space for their practice it s such a joy to call it the home of the fireballs said libba crawford a 7th grader at magellan charter school i really like running and feel like it s such a social sport because you can talk to your friends a lot carver has even bigger plans for the space down the road she would love to see a rubber track scoreboard concession stands and restrooms i think the long term goal is to make this a fully functioning athletic facility to host events said carver i see this as a win win for the school and for our community said segers other teams or clubs that have an interest in using the track can reach out to gms athletic director shawn whitney at shawn whitney gms k12 nc us to learn about the process and apply for approval of use 2026 copyright capitol broadcasting company
