paradise could not be supposed and i find myself wishing i could spend the rest of my days here park visitor kay everett in a postcard from yellowstone july 21 1931 now in its second century built of native materials beginning in the summer and continuing through the frigid winter of 1903 1904 the old faithful inn is a marvel of early lodge style architecture an achievement that has earned its listing as a national historic landmark though assaulted by the 1959 yellowstone earthquake and threatened by the firestorm of september 7 1988 that swept through the old faithful area the structure survives into the 21st century with all the atmosphere and charm of its opening night in june 1904 click here for the old faithful inn history pages acmegraph postcard major renovation of the old faithful inn in october 2004 a multi year major renovation of the old faithful inn was begun at a cost of over 30 million dollars its final phase included the repair and restoration of the inn s massive chimney fireplace in the spring and summer of 2012 as a result the inn is now earthquakeproof and structurally ready it is hoped for another 100 years of service outdated electrical heating and fire sprinkler systems have been replaced and made less conspicuous and new flooring roofing and shingles have been added old house rooms in the east and west wings have been brought up to code while maintaining their historical integrity and charm behind the scenes the kitchen and food storage area has been modernized to accommodate present and future demands the chimney fireplace once blocked as a result of the 1959 yellowstone earthquake has now been restored and all four fireplaces are once again functional today s appearance of the interior may in some ways be closer to what the earliest visitors would have seen this is a series of photos from august 2005 as the inn was in a major phase of the renovation showing some of the changes to the lobby as well as exterior work in year of the fires this is a trip report of a week in yellowstone from aug 30 to sept 7 1988 including the last night at the old faithful inn before it was evacuated the next morning due to the approaching north fork fire that would sweep through the area later that day it includes day to day personal observations of and thoughts about the effects of the fires on the yellowstone experience
