understand is the tendency of folks to represent haleth s rebuttal to thingol as a push back against finrod that she is somehow correcting him or putting him in his place and that he is the one being presumptuous and insulting in this interaction the text makes it clear that haleth is rebuking thingol not finrod alt thingol who refuses to have any contact with the edain intends to force these survivors from a place that even the narrator acknowledges is only tenuously his he sets men aside as strange and dangerous a suspect other furthermore we are told earlier in the chapter that one of his primary points of anger regarding the migration of men from the east is that no one was checking with him before welcoming them and giving them lands in contrast finrod knows the edain he has befriended them from the first moment they entered beleriand and is arguably more familiar with their thoughts and ways than any other among the eldar at this point he knows full well what haleth s feelings on this would be in large part due to this long standing friendship with others among the edain and also because he has heard from haleth s own people about what they endured and the fortitude of their leader just prior to the exchange regarding brethil we are told where the people of haleth wandered after they passed through nan dungortheb and it is noted that some wandered far into the realm of nargothrond finrod who we were previously told is the only prince of the noldor to check in with thingol throughout the process of settling the edain in beleriand knows three things quite well what thingol s reaction would be to humans showing up in a land he nominally claims what the haladin have undergone prior to this moment and what he has learned of the thoughts and ways of the edain through his close friendships so what does finrod do in this situation he goes to thingol to take counsel with him regarding how to proceed assuaging a large part of thingol s frustration and negotiates in such a way that thingol believes each side is granting a concession his to cede land that he claims and haleth s to agree to function as guards of said land however what finrod has actually done here is simply maneuver thingol into allowing the haladin to keep on living exactly as they already were recall that finrod has heard of all that had befallen the people of haleth which includes the noteworthy battle that resulted in haleth becoming their chief namely a defense in which they fought to the death to keep morgoth s forces from crossing a river and ford that guarding the crossings of teiglin is the sole condition for their remaining in brethil is honestly quite cheeky of finrod he neatly de fangs thingol with this feint of concession while simultaneously sending a clear message to haleth when he delivers the news contrary to thingol s assumptions being exactly who they are is already perfectly sufficient to earn thingol s friendship in this context haleth s rebuttal holds a touch of wry humor alt one can almost read this in the same tone as andreth s sarcastic comments in the athrabeth haleth cleverly turns thingol s own supposition on its head rather than men being the strange and dangerous other it is the thoughts of the eldar that are exposed as strange and suspect if thingol s logic is followed through a logic which finrod has adamantly refused
