zhecan james wang a postdoctoral research fellow in the natural language processing group of computer science at the university of california los angeles ucla working under the mentorship of prof kai wei chang amazon scholar and sloan fellow and prof nanyun peng since september 2024 i expect to complete this 1 year contract by fall 2025 i completed my ph d in computer science at columbia university in august 2024 where i had the privilege of being primarily advised by prof shih fu chang morris a and alma schapiro professor dean of the columbia engineering a fellow of the national academy of engineering and acm meanwhile i was also fortunate to benefit from the co advisement of prof kai wei chang at ucla nlp during my ph d i spent almost two years conducting collaborated research projects at google brain deepmind working directly in the multimodal gemini team led by dr quoc v le in addition i have also been involved in a 1 year collaborative research project at microsoft research as an intern part time researcher under the multimodal team led by dr lu yuan resume research interest in one sentence my past works have mainly focused on improving multimodal learning and resolving multimodal commonsense reasoning problems from the natural language processing perspective primarily focusing on explainable reliable and trustworthy reasoning and neural symbolic learning in multiple sentences my research during my ph d program has been funded by the darpa machine common sense mcs program it has focused on artificial intelligence particularly natural language processing multimodal learning e g vision and language commonsense reasoning neural symbolic learning and human in the loop some of my recent works also emphasize trustworthy and explainable ai hallucination mitigation rigorous multimodal mathematics reasoning unified multimodal agents security in agent reasoning and embodied learning i am expanding my current and future research direction to interactive learning e g rl with sparse multimodal human feedback human ai interaction system human centered ai and ai for health x academic excellence and leadership my collaborations extend across academia and industry working closely with 17 professors from 12 institutions across multiple darpa projects as a principal contributor to the darpa mcs machine commonsense and ecole environment driven conceptual learning programs i presented directly to darpa managers during annual evaluations i ve led significant collaborative projects with top universities achieving top performance on the darpa visual commonsense reasoning leaderboard and sota performance on vcr vqa v2 snli ve a okvqa and okvqa my leadership skills were further highlighted by guiding a 12 student team to first place in the iccv microsoft global ms celeb 1m challenge currently i am also awarded as the co pi for the google research scholar program 25 moving forward i aim to foster new research partnerships and pursue funding opportunities from agencies like darpa nsf and nih as well as industry collaborations to advance multimodal commonsense reasoning and related fields since beginning my ai research in 2014 i ve published 16 papers in top tier conferences and 7 in top tier workshops secured 8 ai related patents and amassed 1000 citations at columbia i have contributed 10 papers to prestigious venues serving as the first or co first author and my work has been acknowledged by organizations such as paperweekly ai2 darpa and so on awards and recognition my academic journey has been marked by significant achievements including receiving the eccv 24 doctoral consortium aaai 22 bmvc 17 student scholarship and leading my team to victory in the iccv ms celeb 1m challenge these accolades alongside my research consistently delivering state of the art results over multiple vision language understanding benchmarks underscore my capability for making groundbreaking contributions
