etely distinct in haskell expressions patterns and types are all the same thing for example the array type constructor and the map function for arrays are the same thing not just related things it includes features from functional logic programming function overloading works in a new way and so on i spoke about verse at zurihac 2023 but this talk will be quite different focusing much more on types patterns and denotational semantics simon is one of the designers of the haskell language an inspiring leader for the whole haskell community a prolific researcher and one of the main authors of ghc the de facto standard haskell compiler he currently works on verse garrick chin the haskell gamedev experience this talk is about using haskell for game development from the perspective of releasing a commercial game topics include the applicability of various fp concepts and thoughts on technical feasibility garrick is the developer of defect process a 2d action game written in haskell he currently works as a backend software contractor michael sperber teaching programming haskell to your loved ones we love building programs and seeing our loved ones struggle with this is painful especially if they struggle with haskell which we love showing them how to copy paste a few example programs and change a few parameters is easy but bridging from there to building substantial programs is a different game entirely this workshop is about how to teach programming successfully specifically in haskell through comprehensible design recipes this approach is probably different from how you learned how to program or how you re used to teaching but also more effective and more enjoyable beginner track write your own haskell program new to fp want to learn haskell whether new to programming or experienced in other technologies this track is for you we ll get together and figure out data modeling systematic construction of programs combinator libraries and whatever else you re interested in bring your laptop and we ll get you set up with a haskell environment and dive right in michael sperber is ceo of active group mike specializes in functional architecture he has authored many papers and books on the subject and is an expert on teaching programming jencel panic category theory track jencel will give an introduction to category theory from his freely available book category theory illustrated we will examine different mathematical structures sets groups orders logic and types and we will see how each of them forms categories then we will look into the heart of category theory functors and natural transformations no prior knowledge is required jencel is a writer turned programmer they are the author of the book category theory illustrated evan czaplicki strategies for popularizing functional programming i love functional programming and i have spent 15 years learning how to effectively share this enthusiasm with others through elm and acadia both compilers written in haskell when it comes to gaining users for elm which strategies have worked which are a waste of time how are these lessons applied in acadia which of these strategies might be applicable in other languages evan is mostly known as the creator of the elm programming language he currently works around the intersection of databases and typed functional programming andres löh implementing dependent pattern matching a language with dependent pattern matching is one where functions can be defined by cases on gadts indexed datatypes so that different cases can lead to different types for the result and the other arguments in this tutorial we will start from a small implementation of a dependently typed language essentially the one used in the paper a tutorial implementation of a dependently typed lambda calculus by löh mcbride and swierstra and then add support for dependent pattern matching we will try to illustrate the essence of pattern matching by presenting an implementation that is unburdened by optimisations we will reflect on design choices and contrast our choices with those made by other languages such as agda haskell lean rocq this tutorial requires no previous knowledge of dependently typed programming nor any advanced haskell features however we will focus more on implementing dependent types than on actually using them so the motivation of it all may be easier to understand if you ve seen some type level or dependently typed programming before andres is a partner at well typed he has been a active contributor speaker and organizer in the haskell community for over 25 years he is also a co host of the haskell unfolder andrea vezzosi implementing dependent pattern matching with andres andrea is a consultant at well typed formerly a researcher on type systems he contributed to the haskell implementation of the dependently typed language agda in particular as main author of the cubical agda extension vaibhav sagar how to stop writing haskell haskell is pretty great nevertheless some companies have stopped using it why do they do this and what can we learn from it vaibhav is a haskell and nix developer and uncompetitive powerlifter he is the current maintainer of ihaskell which allows you to use haskell inside jupyter notebooks michael chavinda getting to the data dataframes notebooks and typed pipelines michael is a staff software engineer at coreweave where he works on marimo notebooks michael is also a core contributor to the datahaskell organisation working primarily on data infrastructure and explainable ai schedule zurihac is primarily a community event and a hackathon rather than a conference aside from the talks and tracks attendees are encouraged to work together on all sorts of haskell related open source projects and socialize trying to attend everything may a bit too much so our recommendation is just pick to what you find interesting here is a list of projects participants are planning to work on feel free to add your own this schedule is tentative and minor changes may still need to happen as we get closer to the event start end title link kind closing admin zurihac prelude the haskell ecosystem workshop and the haskell implementors workshop will take place on the two days just prior to zurihac 2026 june 4 5 2026 organised by the haskell foundation and the ost eastern switzerland university of applied sciences in rapperswil these events are co located with the zurihac more details about these events can be found on their websites note that unlike zurihac itself these are not free events you will need to purchase tickets here venue oberseestrasse 10 8640 rapperswil the hackathon takes place at the beautiful rapperswil jona campus of ost formerly hsr about 40 minutes outside of zürich city the venue is located right next to the lake and weather has been superb 25 c 77 during the pre covid19 years so feel free to bring your swimming gear here is an interactive campus map useful if you need to locate a specific building or room on the campus accomodation where to stay a well known triathlon is taking place the same weekend in rapperswil so accomodation close to the venue is very hard to find what alternatives are there to rapperswil the nearby city of zurich has a huge capacity of hotels and accommodations of varying types the public transport to rapperswil is frequent convenient and fast most of the organizers commute in from the greateer zurich area the following stations have direct train connections to rapperswil every 30 minutes zurich hardbrücke zurich hauptbahnhof zurich stadelhofen zurich oerlikon zurich altstetten there are also many cities and towns around the lake area with fast and frequent connections to rapperswil kaltbrunn männedorf meilen pfäffikon sz stäfa uetikon uster uznach wädenswil wattwil wetzikon during previous years attendees have also shared accomodation e g on airbnb in order to get in touch with fellow attendees we recommend using the accomodation channel in our discord which you can join upon registration if weather allows for it camping is also a very affordable and beautiful option for the ultimate grassroots zurihac festival fans several people have stayed at this campsite since 2017 getting to the venue how to get there by train we recommend attendees to use public transportation you can take the s5 s7 or s15 trains to get from the zürich main station to rapperswil these trains run regularly in 30 minute intervals what train tickets do i need if you stay in zürich city the easiest option is to get a 24 hour pass for all zones it s good for all public transportation around zürich up to rapperswil a one way ticket costs 17 20chf the 24 hour pass 34 40chf please note that the 24 hour pass is literally a 24 hour pass and can be used over multiple days e g if you buy one on the first day of the hackathon at e g 9 00 am you can still use it to take the train at 8 00 am the next day this way it is possible to buy only two tickets for the three day conference a lightly cheaper alternative to the 24 hour pass is the 9 o clock day pass which works more like a regular day pass however this requires you to take the train to rapperswil after 09 00 am on weekdays as described on the website you can buy tickets from the sbb or zvv vending machines which have a button to use them in english rather than german on the home screen alternatively you can use the sbb website sbb mobile app on android or ios how to get there by car there are some paid public parking lots in walking distance from the campus see here for a map it can be difficult to find a free parking spot in these lots and you can expect to pay about chf 20 per day we therefore recommend that you come via public transport if possible supported by community partners we are still looking for sponsors for this year s event since we attract many exceptionally good programmers from all over the world it is an excellent place to do recruiting please contact zurihac at zfoh ch for more information individual donations are accepted as well supported for scholarships switzerland can be expensive for people visiting from abroad zurihac is a free event but transportation lodging and food might discourage somebody without a good income from attending we want to make it easier for anyone to come and contribute towards making the haskell community exciting and diverse for that reason we will provide a small number of scholarships update we have allocated all of the budget we had available for scholarships this year and will no longer be accepting new candidates what does this involve how do i apply because we do not charge anything for tickets our budget is limited and we can currently only award less than a handful of scholarships we will award them on a first come first serve basis anybody accepted will be supported with an amount between 100 and 500 swiss francs depending on your expenses our focus is on people with limited financial means and underrepresented groups in tech the latter includes but is not limited to people of color anyone identifying as lgbtqia women and disabled people you can apply by sending an email to email protected and tell us why you are interested in joining the event and how a scholarship would help don t write an essay a couple of sentences are enough please do not use generative ai for this after we confirm your scholarship please book your transport and accommodation and send us the receipts and iban information for the wire transfer once we get your receipts we ll wire you the money we will not disclose the recipients of these scholarships in order to protect their privacy the amount you estimate for your expenses will not be a factor when we consider your application don t be shy and just contact us if you feel that this can make a difference to you there is no downside to applying and we will never disclose your identity about contact the main organizers for zurihac 2026 are jasper van der jeugt farhad mehta and alex drake additional key people include andreas herrmann benjamin plattner bieke hoefkens cazim hysi jeremy stucki john rodewald lukas buchli olivier lischer raphael das gupta and vaibhav sagar our design partner is sasakitiller if you have any questions before the event please reach out to to the organizers you can also interact with us on our social media accounts mastodon bluesky twitter terms intellectual property each participant will retain ownership of any and all intellectual and industrial property rights to their work created or used during the hackathon code of conduct zurihac uses the berlin code of conduct photo policy the organizers as well as other participants may take photos during the event to use on social media blogs and websites we encourage this as promoting the event helps our goal of bringing more people into the haskell community on the other hand we want to respect the privacy of the attendees therefore we ask everyone to be mindful and request explicit permission before taking p...
