nd central europe as well as to some degree the muslim states of the eastern mediterranean preserved many aspects of the empire s culture and art for centuries afterward surviving byzantine art is mostly religious and with exceptions at certain periods is highly conventionalised following traditional models that translate carefully controlled church theology into artistic terms painting in
