armstrong august 4 2026 june 3 2026 randydafoe 7 comments louis daniel armstrong born august 4 1901 in new orleans he was a legendary figure whose impact on music history is immeasurable he moved to new york in 1924 and after a lifetime of achievements passed away in his sleep from a heart attack on july 6 1971 at his residence in corona queens new york city he was 69 years old and had been hospitalized for a heart attack earlier that march after a show at the waldorf astoria armstrong was still practising his trumpet with hopes of returning to the stage he was survived by his wife lucille wilson armstrong s only child was the result of an affair in 1955 with a dancer from the cotton club a fact not publicly known until sharon preston folta brought it forward in 2012 armstrong had ensured his manager arranged generous monthly child support payments after learning of her birth in 1955 armstrong had also supported his disabled nephew clarence the first time armstrong appeared on a recording was with the legendary king oliver s creole jazz band in 1923 the story of louis armstrong s life is among the most remarkable in music history some say certain people are predestined for greatness and armstrong embodies that idea born to a 16 year old mother and abandoned by his father after his sister s birth three years later he was raised by his grandmother from the age of five at age 12 he fired a pistol on new year s eve was arrested and spent time at the colored waifs home for boys the conditions were harsh with no mattresses and barely enough food to sustain the boys despite such adversity destiny unfolded at the home for boys although the care was questionable music education was provided and armstrong quickly became the band leader he already had a head start playing cornet since age 11 after dropping out of school while accounts differ bunk johnson claims to have taught armstrong at a local honky tonk bar but it was jazz pioneer king oliver whom armstrong credited as his inspiration after leaving the home at age 13 in 1914 armstrong was reclaimed by his father his unlikely path to success included befriending an older drummer working as a pimp for a prostitute selling coal and eventually playing music on mississippi river boats under the tutelage of band leader fate marable during this time armstrong met king oliver armstrong travelled to chicago with trumpeter king oliver playing second trumpet in his band and making his first recordings king oliver s creole jazz band s 1923 78 rpm record froggie moore chimes blues this marked armstrong s first recorded solo on chimes blues a cornerstone of early jazz featuring ensemble improvisation and emerging solo styles the band included king oliver cornet armstrong second cornet johnny dodds clarinet honore dutrey trombone lil hardin piano bill johnson banjo bass and baby dodds drums all recorded at gennett studio in richmond indiana on april 6 1923 louis armstrong s hot five was his debut as a band leader and feature artist gut bucket blues yes i m in the barrel was released in 1926 at age 25 he was not only a rising star but among the best jazz artists of that time armstrong married pianist lil hardin herself an exceptional jazz musician and composer when he was 18 and she was 20 their marriage lasted only four years but they recorded together armstrong then moved to new york in 1924 to play for fletcher henderson recording with henderson clarence williams and king oliver by 1924 he formed louis armstrong s hot five continuing to record regularly and build his reputation the pianist was his first wife and accomplished artist and composer lil hardin armstrong in 1928 struttin with some barbecue composed by lil armstrong and recorded by louis armstrong and his hot five became a jazz classic the term barbecue was slang at the time for an attractive woman by the 1930s armstrong s songs began appearing on mainstream pop charts in 1936 armstrong teamed up with jimmy dorsey leading to more gigs and recordings in 1950 he and ella fitzgerald recorded can anyone explain and dream a little dream of me among many more memorable collaborations armstrong worked with numerous artists including the crosby brothers louis jordan gordon jenkins dave brubeck jack teagarden the mills brothers duke ellington guy lombardo of london ontario my hometown and oscar peterson another canadian legend armstrong was the first to record mack the knife in 1955 later made famous by bobby darin who retained armstrong s ad libbed lyrics including the name lotte lenya the original star of both the german and english versions of the threepenny opera armstrong was also the first who recorded hello dolly and many other iconic songs what a wonderful world 1967 written by bob thiele and george david weiss only reached 16 on the u s adult contemporary chart and did not crack the billboard hot 100 despite its greatness but it hit 1 in the uk and austria and charted highly worldwide its lack of success in the u s was attributed to abc records president larry newton s dislike and lack of promotion in the uk the song s merit alone brought it to the top of the charts producer bob thiele reportedly locked newton out of the studio to finish recording the song armstrong gave up his slightly above scale pay so the band could be paid overtime due to disruptions apart from newtons the other distractions included a train whistle causing retakes videos of armstrong performing always showcase his magic and what a wonderful world was inducted into the grammy hall of fame in 1999 along with 11 more of his songs the simple lyrics of what a wonderful world paint an idyllic picture as armstrong sings yes i think to myself what a wonderful world well it s quite transcendent and this was what louis armstrong was all about he helped bring jazz to the forefront he tried so hard to bridge the gap between blacks and white s much of that effort is not only overlooked but often misunderstood as well without a doubt one of the most iconic artists of the 20th century there is so much more to tell about this amazing artist but i will leave you with just one last video clip here in december 1965 he would have been 64 though says he is 65 armstrong performs as a guest on the dean martin show 1965 74 his last performance was in march 1971 louis armstrong would die in his sleep of a heart attack on july 6 1971 the guess who july 29 2026 july 28 2026 randydafoe 17 comments this is about the 2026 reunion tour of burton cummings and randy backman they wrote the songs burton sang them randy played some great guitar on them and yes they had two other guys at that time talented though they were also interchangeable rabid fans may disagree but this is the fact you wanted to see them play you came for the searing vocals of burton cummings and the great songs he wrote mostly with randy bachman just before they would hit their zenith in 1970 with american woman climbing but not yet at 1 on billboard randy left the band long story there while the two have played together numerous times over the past say 40 years or so this is first time they are once again under the banner of the guess who so you will see numerous photos and videos of the guess who but if it was not from 1969 or earlier randy bachman is not in any of them not even american woman he is only on the recording i only mention this as i have noticed the confusion i even had to correct youtube s ai that labelled former bassist and backing vocalist jim kale as randy bachman and one of the two guys they hired to replace him was a burly guy with a beard who resembled bachman the story of the band before during and after is a long one i have posted about them before i mentioned in passing that i was attending this reunion show stop in london ontario on june 2 2026 a place burton said they first played 60 years ago in 1966 i was seven years old anyway this is a short take on the night i have said before i am not a reviewer but our good friend deke from his northern lair called the distortion den has reminded me several times to get this done so before he has another chance here we go this is a clip from 1969 showing the guess who singing these eyes in the video l to r are bassist and backing vocalist jim kale burton cummings on piano and lead vocalist gary peterson on drums and far right is randy bachman lead guitar and backing vocals thanks to my lovely wife who as a christmas present bestowed me floor seat tickets to the show i had never seen randy bachman perform live my wife and i had seen burton in his solo days perform three times but it has been many years since then to have the former eagle don felder open the show was a big bonus he did some of his own stuff what he co wrote with the eagles and of course got out the double neck guitar for hotel california i have to say it was pretty darn good and the closest i will ever get to a live eagles concert after don there was of course a break taking a good look around it was fun to be the some of the youngest people in the room at age 67 those opportunities are dwindling the two stars took to the stage with what i have to say was an incredible seven piece backing band so in addition to bachman they had three other guitarists the songs were the ones they did together and one or two from before burton left the group five years later in 1975 the numbers included these eyes posted above albert flasher hand me down world laughing undun no time and of course american woman one of bachman s later groups was bachman turner overdrive so we heard let it ride you ain t seen nothing yet and the closing encore of takin care of business unfortunately i need to upgrade my wp package in order to include my own video clips from the show but here is a still of the man himself randy bachman honestly it was a great night but no they do not sound like they did back in the day to use a phrase as worn out as these two iconic artist are no one should expect that they should be able to perform period let alone at the high level they did that night well worth the price of admission we had a great time so i can cross randy off of my must see list in september i get to cross another name off as well lucky me they are currently touring the southern us here is a link to the website fateful eight in the title refers to my list of the only women singer songwriters who s debut albums consisted of 100 self written songs from that list i have featured janis ian ferron vashti bunyan and laura nyro linda perhacs 1943 is a true california scene psychedelic folk singer songwriter whose story is one of music s great slow burn rediscoveries raised in mill valley and in the late 1960s worked as a dental hygienist in beverly hills as these things go in that neighbourhood it s all about who you know or in this case all about who s mouth you put your hands in a dental client was an oscar winning film composer and that connection led to her one and only album for decades parallelograms it was produced with composer leonard rosenman unfortunately it did very poorly and at age 26 linda perhacs returned to her dental career but parallelograms refused to disappear it was rediscovered by record enthusiasts around 1998 it seems the record had some influence on songwriters including opeth s mikael åkerfeldt devendra banhart and joanna newsom apologies i do not know who they are the title track parallelograms if this disappearing act sounds familiar i mentioned above british folk singer vashti bunyan who left the music industry in the mid 1960s only to have her music rediscovered in a similar fashion for now this brings my series on women singer songwriters debut
