always been a big deal in the horror film genre but more recent films include mads a drug trip gone bad raw cannibalistic sororities infested voracious spiders and titane surrealist car horror germany gets a little more down and gory with movies like overlord nazi zombies cuckoo combining science and folklore and blood red sky featuring motherhood and vampirism there are horror films from sweden let the right one in spain rec iran a girl walks home alone at night and under the shadow and denmark gets in on the horror game with the controversial speak no evil this is by no means a comprehensive look at international horror for that you would probably need to look up each country but let it not be said that there are no original films being made in fact that s a complaint i m more than tired of hearing the problem isn t that there are no original films being made they are being made every day all year long the issue is that the complainant s tastes are too small and they attack the block dark and mysterious movies like his house and the candyman remake by black female director nia dacosta who seems to be making a name for herself since she is also the showrunner for it welcome to derry there was more tv too in the form of lovecraft country and interview with the vampire which featured a black gay vampire in turn of the century new orleans for the film to qualify as a black american film it has to have more than just a black lead character it helps if it deals with how the horror interacts with a black cast that is already dealing with the horrors of racism in and set the stage for future feminist themed films by turning conventions on its head instead of making jennifer a final girl or simply recreating the revenge narrative the movie focused on female revenge as monstrous date rape and close friend relationships amanda seyfriend plays needy jennifer s childhood friend who feels she needs to save her friend after jennifer is resurrected as a demon who eats the men who sexually covet her and asks the question of how to deal with a girlfriend whose personality has changed as a result of experiencing sexual trauma most but not all of these films are directed and written by women and through them we can glean some idea of what is it that makes women anxious rather than what only men think is scary and some prominent themes begin to emerge like food and consumption in movies like jennifer s body raw and bones and all which are movies about women with extreme appetites the generalized anxieties of living as a woman emerge in movies like it follows and barbarian issues of feminine empowerment and betrayal become apparent in movies like ready or not the girl with all the gifts and the descent while the anxieties of motherhood are the themes of xx the babadook and the 2018 version of suspiria and generational trauma seems to be a popular issue in films like umma ready or not barbarian jennifer s body it follows carrie mascot horror the past ten years have seen a sharp uptick in horror that comes out of children s entertainment mascots and cartoons mascot horror features a nostalgia for children s settings like playgrounds and child friendly restaurants like chuck e cheese along with the giant animatronic or cartoon animals and creatures that are were a staple of such environments twisting these figures into grotesque monsters that exist to harm children rather than entertain them mascot horror contain elements of the slasher film along with creepy stories and lore the most famous of this subgenre is five nights at freddy s which started out as a popular game became a sensation on youtube and now includes a film franchise and several books there are more than a few movies based in this subgenre one which actually scares the shit of me considering how i feel about seemingly inanimate objects that not only move but are actively malevolent like willy s wonderland which stars nicholas cage yes i watched it some of these mascot films and just about any childhood character toy or animated series qualifies have only become popular in the last five to ten years as the copyright for several trademarked characters expired like winnie the pooh popeye the sailor man sailor mickey and bambi the internet and hollywood were quick to exploit these characters for horror movies there are also movies and creepypastas that were directly inspired by five nights at freddy s like poppy s playtime while some of it is specifically aimed at children since it features monsters preying on children s souls children overcoming danger and a lack of gore there is still a contingent of the subgenre that is squarely adult oriented with a lot of gore and violence like benny loves you and the banana splits movie which is one i recognize from my childhood there is also a contingent that involves speculation on the lore behind certain childhood tv shows like the mashup of the teletubbies with the cosmic horror of lovecraft watch list five nights at freddy s willy s wonderland winnie the pooh blood honey bambi the reckoning the man in the godzilla suit when it comes to horror there is a wealth of types to choose from you don t have to stick with the same old 80s style slasher movies although the entertainment industry has never stopped making those and you can surely find some new and interesting things with which to frighten yourself this is by no means a comprehensive list of new horror but other subgenres include true crime and mysterious disappearances missing 411 david them here to add more content but you know what i don t care i have zero intention of ever watching any of them if i get bored just watching the trialer i m probably not going to see the film or series and sometimes some trailers are just insulting like the new one for the cape fear series why whose idea was this the two original films were made as perfectly as they could be made and while i love javier bardem absolutely no one was asking for a remake just for the record i prefer the 1962 version because who could possibly resist the acting mashup of gregory peck and robert mitchum just as absolutely no one was asking for a remake of the harry potter series which only ended a few years ago in 2011 now the trailers listed here will definitely get a viewing if i can find them on a streaming site or get to the theater supergirl extended trailer i m very much looking forward to his movie even though i ve never been a supergirl fan i haven t read any of her books didn t watch the original film or the series and just generally didn t care about her i still don t care that much about supergirl but i really like milly alcock i think she s an incredible actress and i loved her little cameo in superman supergirl has never been a favorite of mine or even of interest to me as a character but i gotta admit this trailer got me in my feels looks like it might be fun and has jason momoa featured as the one character in comic book history he was born to portray lobo i have watched things i wouldn t normally watch like that minecraft movie just because momoa was present and the song choice for this trailer absolutely perfect i m always a sucker for old school r b the end of oak street ever since i saw ray harryhausen s beast from 20 thousand fathoms as a kid i ve been absolutely fascinated by dinosaurs not kaiju although they ll do in a pinch stomping through the modern world that is why the lost world is my favorite jurassic park movie so yeah this trailer had me the moment the dinosaur showed up the premise of this trailer reminds me of the scifi book series called footprints of thunder by james f david about some kind of mixed up time quilt effect that transplanted modern people to the past and dinosaurs to the present so some humans end up living amongst dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures the book was serious but also a lot of fun hopefully this will be as much fun minore i got nothing besides dancing drinking cosmic entities and tentacles apparently the greek film industry is alive and well i d never heard of this movie until a few days ago it looks decidedly lovecraftian and i m all here for it where s this streaming backrooms a lot of people are very very excited for this movie i am cautiously excited but the trailer looks alright and appears to be very faithful to the creepypasta videos on which it is based the backrooms is the liminal space creepy pasta phenomenon created by youtuber kane pixels who also worked on this film and it s finally getting the a24 treatment i like chewitel ejiofor but i don t know the two actresses i m not going to go into the lore here because it s been a few years and it s gotten pretty deep
