o social political and economic change maybe i m being wildly unfair my wife made the point that i found many of the images of poverty from the 1930s stereotyped and clichéd because these were the very photographers who invented the clichés they invented new ways of depicting people in cities and so created templates which later photographers copied and which as a result became clichés and stereotypes so that this exhibition in a sense takes you back to the origins shows you the invention of tropes styles and approaches which we now regard as classic in her view the show can be regarded as not just a selection of random images but a survey of origins of many of the ways of seeing we nowadays in 2026 take for granted making many of the photographers here inventors of ways of seeing as well as working snappers she s probably right 3 what s missing but pondering the relentless emphasis on poverty immiseration peeling tenements aids victims people living in cars and climaxing with the grimly shitty condition of the new york subway in the 1980s i realised that something huge is completely missing from the exhibition which is any indication of the real entertainment and excitement the buzz and glamour of big city living hang on wasn t new york the city of broadway shows and prohibition and speakeasies and nightclubs and jazz clubs and fred astaire and ginger rodgers dancing in top hat and tails and hang on they reference the harlem renaissance but didn t that include duke ellington at the cotton club and numerous other stylish nightclubs weren t there the bright lights of times square the war when the city was packed with soldiers sailors and airmen on the town ve day alfred eisenstaedt s famous photo of a sailor kissing the girl in times square on vj day election tickertape parades thanksgiving parades full of razzamatazz floats and bands wasn t there baseball with the new york yankees and football with new york yankees weren t there fashion shoots for vogue with stars from audrey hepburn to marilyn monroe didn t frank sinatra sing new york new york it s a wonderful town weren t there 100 years of classical music at carnegie hall what about wall street central park i looked at the nine ruscha photos of car parks and thought how come there s no reference anywhere to hollywood which surely played a role in los angeles s growth and image well you get the idea once i d started thinking about what was missing i realised that this exhibition of mostly black and white images of the poor or abstract city architecture or bereft looking black people in the streets surely it completely omits everything which made new york and by extension all the other big american cities it features so vibrant and glamorous and exciting just recently i ve been to big exhibitions about lee miller and cecil beaton and marilyn monroe and all of them featured images of new york and american urban life which are far more vibrant and glamorous and inspiring than anything on display here there s a lot of great photos in this exhibition but the claim that it represents a sort of photographic history of the american city is i hope you can now see exaggerated and factually incorrect it seemed to me to be a very partial limited and incomplete vision fine on its own rather grim earnest terms but missing out almost everything which made america s big cities seem so glamorous and wonderful to so many people who lived outside them or in other countries summary it s an impressive roll call of 38 major american photographers many benefiting from the curators detailed wall labels explaining their careers and achievements in fascinating detail but often let down by a the average quality of the actual images or b the simple fact that many photographers are represented by just one or two shots all accompanied by the nagging doubt by the end that you ve just processed 100 images of american cities but somehow they ve completely failed to convey why american cities were so brash and exciting and glamorous for most of the century why did new york become the centre of the western world after the war not for its shoeshine boys and kids jumping into the river or a man crossing the street wearing a straw boater just a brief comparison with almost any other photography exhibition about 20th century america begins to suggest how narrow in subject matter and impact this selection actually is for example compare and contrast with this recent photography show to see the kind of thing that s missing fragile beauty photographs from the sir elton beautifully designed exhibition about a major contemporary artist in her relatively short career from the early 1970s until her untimely death in 1985 cuban american artist ana mendieta 1948 to 1985 developed a personal style of land art a feminist land art which explored the interaction of the human body generally her own body with the natural world using natural like fire mud water wood sand fire and flowers these ephemeral works were recorded as photographs and films scores of which are on display here along with sculptures and installations installation view of ana mendieta tate modern showing the scale and spaciousness of the layout photo by the author before she really grew into that approach and perfected the many aspects of it in the early to mid 1970s while studying then teaching at the university of iowa she experimented with other contemporary styles and techniques this major exhibition brings together 120 works to give a comprehensive overview of mendieta s output starting in the early 70s and continuing up until her untimely death in 1985 less than 15 years and presents the full range of her oeuvre including paintings photos films installations sculptures and more unusually it starts at the end with several rooms devoted to very late works showing the maturity of her siluetas or body silhouette series which she started ten years earlier in the mid 70s in this review i ll adopt a more conventional chronological approach founding idea exile half way through there s a display case with documentation from a 1982 exhibition which includes this statement by mendieta which i ll quote in full as it is the key to her entire career for the last twelve years i have been carrying on a dialogue between the landscape and the female body having been torn from my homeland cuba during my adolescence i am overwhelmed by the feeling of having been cast out from the womb nature my art is the way i re establish the bonds that unite me to the universe it is a return to the maternal source these obsessive acts of re asserting my ties with the earth are really a manifestation of my thirst for being in essence my works are the re activation of primeval beliefs at work within the human psyche this needs to be supplemented by a detailed explanation of why she left cuba and the extraordinary and traumatic nature of her exile according to her wikipedia page ana aged 12 and her 15 year old sister raquelin were sent to the united states by their parents to live in dubuque iowa through operation pedro pan a collaborative program run by the us government and the catholic charities for cuban children to flee fidel castro s government ana and raquelin were among 14 000 children who migrated to the united states through this program in 1961 the sisters were able to stay together during this time due to a power of attorney signed by their parents which mandated that they not be separated the two sisters spent their first weeks in refugee camps and then moved between several institutions and foster homes throughout iowa in 1966 mendieta and her sister were reunited with her mother raquel and younger brother ignacio her father joined them in 1979 having spent 18 years in a political prison in cuba for his involvement in the bay of pigs invasion a refugee camp institutions and foster homes far from her real home and mother and father aged 12 so not just any old exile but an extremely traumatic uprooting at a very sensitive and vulnerable age no wonder she felt overwhelmed torn uprooted and no wonder the power and consistency of the urge to been more shackled by catholic and patriarchal traditions torn from it and thrown into a family less north american protestant culture with completely different values she was able to sit outside american culture and assumptions this doesn t necessarily explain but it introduces two other key aspects of her work and belief which were 1 native traditions a consistent interest in non white non european native beliefs among them the santeria of her native land and the deities of yoruba mythology when she went to the university of iowa she studied archaeology and art visited archaeological sites in mexico studied pre colombian traditions in a formal structured way 2 primeval art and her wish to step altogether outside the narrow limited timeline of the contemporary art world to see herself in the continuum of human artistic practice stretching far far back before writing before agriculture before the ice ages to the most primitive early cave paintings and back beyond to the earliest carving and mark making this explains the late series of works called esculturas rupestres rupestrian sculptures the title of the series demonstrates her interest in prehistoric art the word rupestrian describing the practice of making marks on stone walls gallery early experimental humorous works mendieta developed her artistic practice on the cutting edge intermedia programme at the university of iowa between 1972 and 1974 largely self directed and peer led the course was a place for artists experimenting with conceptual and cross disciplinary practices mendieta held an important role in this artistic community arguing for forms of art that go beyond the production of static objects some of these early projects are documented here and feel like high spirited student pranks 1972 facial hair transplants in this series mendieta glued a moustache to her face using hair from a classmate she was interested in conceptual art and performance led practices encouraged by the intermedia program at the university of iowa mendieta presented a similar work for her ma thesis and wrote hair has always fascinated me the way it grows where it grows and the significance past sculpture engaging in acts of transformation here she sculpts her hair with shampoo during this time she also created works that involved reshaping her features with makeup or wigs and projecting alison jacques london 1972 glass works in another gag mendieta pressed her face and body up against one side of a pane of glass and took photographs from the other the photographs elaborate on questions she was thinking through and experimenting with at the time like the possibility of sculpting the body the work also opens up ideas of identity and the distortion of appearance prevalent in 1970s experimental artistic circles they are surprisingly reminiscent of francis bacon s distorted portraits but it s the idea of sculpting with the body which was to bear fruit installation view of
