a summer internship at an aba clinic it was the same place that had provided my in school aba for a few years in elementary school i went in very excited to work with autistic kids if unsure about the uses and philosophy of aba i almost immediately came to the conclusion that the kids were lovely and i very much enjoyed hanging out with them but the other staff were a problem there was one kid who i ll call mateo who only spoke in echolalia i was pretty sure the scripts were from a kids tv show but couldn t figure out which one when mateo said something in my general direction i would say back something very uninspired like is that from something did someone on tv say that or i m sorry i don t know what that s from almost immediately an aba practitioner at the clinic took me aside and explained to me that i shouldn t speak to or even acknowledge mateo when he talked to or near me because the clinic was responding to mateo s echolalia with planned ignoring to encourage him to talk without echolalia i pointed out that i had never heard mateo say anything without echolalia so if i ignored all his echolalia i would be ignoring him whenever he spoke and how would that encourage him to speak this question was never answered to my satisfaction so i kept responding to mateo when he talked to me towards the end of the summer mateo pulled me aside to tell me something important another kid was sitting in the chair he usually sat in and he didn t know what to do i helped mateo pick another chair and then went excitedly to the other staff to tell them that mateo had asked me for help with a problem surely this was progress they almost didn t believe me mateo doesn t do that by this time i was actively despairing about the other staff and so didn t bother to argue that maybe mateo talked to me because he knew i would respond unlike the other staff who literally gave no indication that they could even hear him when he spoke by the middle of the internship i thought i had a better grasp on what the clinic did and didn t value this didn t line up with my values and so i ignored it a lot of the time but i was happy when i got a chance to tell the staff a kid did something that they and i agreed was progress one day jake came in very dysregulated and immediately smacked me right in the tits with both hands not a great start to either my or jake s afternoon 20 minutes later jake had calmed down a bit and he and i were playing with another boy one of them had shown interest in playing with the marbles from hungry hungry hippos so i had scooped up all the marbles and started a game of passing them from person to person i was extremely proud of this the kids were connecting socially they were getting sensory input they enjoyed there was turn taking no one was hitting my boobs surely we could all agree that this was time well spent no such luck another staff member quickly came up to me and asked me to stop doing this with the kids because that isn t how you use the hungry hungry hippos pieces and i was encouraging inappropriate play i cannot stress enough that i had no special insights here i was a twenty something with no educational background who had never spent much time with kids autistic or otherwise i genuinely did not do anything especially good or creative while at the clinic i just didn t have my head as far up my ass as the other adults this enabled me to treat the kids like people instead of responding to everything they did with hostility for no good reason i know many people argue that aba is different now it is not abusive anymore some practitioners don t even try to extinguish autistic behaviors like stimming i m sure this is true in some cases but there are a lot of ways to completely overlook a kid s personhood and treat them like crap that most people wouldn t perceive as abuse and that don t involve restricting stimming even if some of the practices have changed have the goals changed the values
