your characters deal and cope with their mental health ava m gale answered the most prominent example is mori he has a substantial history with depression and anxiety including childhood ptsd and trauma related dissociative identity disorder he survived both abuse and a hurricane at an early age and after being placed in an adoptive family who treated him well it took years for him to recover and find comfortable stability obviously he s still dealing with the did but he and the other alters in his head have mostly worked out a system of coping mechanisms and communication it helps that he does have a caring family and many friends and a loving wife now who can all play a role in supporting him when he struggles his brother in law helped him build a little safe room in their shared home where he can retreat when the weather gets a bit too stormy and starts triggering old memories he still bears the scars of self harm and occasionally relapses when he does relapse it s usually feather plucking his wife is a medical professional though so she s quick on the case any time he gets injured whether he did it to himself or just had an accident he does also have some medications though they re mainly focused on regulating the way magic energy flows through him because the extensive healing he had to go through as a child kinda destabilized his leylines so the medication isn t directly targeting his mental health but it sure does help to have his physical health or perhaps metaphysical in this case taken care of still even with all the help available to him mori does hide things from people there are issues he won t talk about with anyone much to his own detriment he may seem like he s doing a lot better right now but there is a big problem he s just been shoving under how do they communicate with others paynewriting answered do any of our characters use mobility aides or prosthetics what are these tools like in our world so tom is top of this list as a wheelchair user bilateral amputee above each knee she has several actually all manual as she works very hard on her physique and it makes for light and collapsible chairs that the rest of the crew run drills on being able to grab along with her for emergency evacuations she and the crew have built her wheelchairs that work for her smooth moving and nimble and with integrated fidget toys and clips for things like server blade brackets to help her with her work there are some more off road options but most are just for working on smooth surfaces and having one to go in whichever car they have that week and one at home with cleaner tires we re talking near future 2070 so prosthetic legs and really good ones were an option but with the corporatisation of these things it would have meant selling off all of her privacy and subscribing to a service to be able to walk again there are non corporate options for prosthetics but by the time she was able to sit down and start accessing the dark web resources it would take to build them she had a resistance to fight instead also amongst the crew ren is often reliant on a stave to support their joints on bad days heds and cfs but can walk unsupported and often does when doing infiltration work though it takes a toll though far from their primary means of getting about both will 100 make use of the stronger members of the crew and their willingness to carry people about as needed do any of our characters have mental health concerns how do our characters deal and cope with their mental health yes um one sec yes so the crew is composed of queer and disabled folks living under a fascist regime that has tried to eradicate people like them via making life so unlivable that those members of those groups commit suicide coping varies from the intense hedonism of illy and ana s nymphomania or lala s substance abuse to the brutal violence and dedication to the resistance as a calling that drives nobody boots and kiki there is medication in the mix for many of them but that s still being pinned down illy keeps a visible timer of when she last experienced suicidal thoughts for the others to track it sits beside the timers for boots and lala keeping clean but most of all they cope because they have each other the crew love each other intensely they are a polycule after all they act as their own little island of refuge propping each other up and caring for each other combined with the very meaningful impact of their efforts things like keeping open smuggling channels for hrt into the country and doing what they can to keep the police afraid of descending into out and out thuggery they find a way to make life worth it do any of our characters have disabilities that affect communication how do they communicate with others so there are some very nuanced elements of this like the way illy s anxieties cloud her ability to understand people around her to the point of not realising when she s in relationships sometimes or kiki s warped world view from their own trauma leading to the prickly outbursts that gave them their nickname and denied their self actualisation for years but the clearest answer is polly who is slowly going blind due to progressive retinopathy this massively limits her ability to interact with visual media from the text logs and code that are usually involved in her role as a hacker for the crew to her eventually concession that she d have to watch her anime as dubs and not subs she s fought the decline for a while but the stress of trying to focus with the peripherals she still has was giving her headaches and so ren eventually started making her spend time each day blindfolded to help her relax she can still type fundamentally as fast and cleanly as anyone in the crew though and still writes code with a little help from text to speech systems built for her to navigate the code better it is actually incredible how good you get at writing clean and clear code when it needs to be navigated blind but more generally the crew initially added a lot of voice interfaces to whatever systems they could there are refreshable braille displays alongside almost every digital screen and plenty of indexing for finding them when zora an ai eventually moved in with the crew the two ended up getting close as being able to put a shard of herself there constantly zora soon replaced a lot of text to speech and voice interfaces that polly relied on with her far more robust efforts to act as a carer of sorts certainly anything they write together is far better formatted and zora is much better at matching tone when reading out text messages from the others in no small part because she has usually watched them being written too massive massive thanks to zac for running this ask to as is on the spectrum but masks pretty well she often fiddles with her jewelry twisting her rings pulling at a necklace because it feels too constrictive even if it s not etc sometimes it s just the need to fidget to sooth her anxiety or a sense of deep discomfort that she can t get away form in the moment she also writes letters much like a journal but throws them into a fire and doesn t keep them there s no characters that have disability that would affect communication however in nyrus there is a few different sign languages and even two ways to cast spells without needing to speak the mobility aides or prosthetics what are these tools like in your world pb dot answered oh i forgot about this one for a bit my apologies that said let s talk a little bit about michael and his many many many canes so michael has knee problems back when he was a kid he fought for the freedom of the molekin and although this taught him much about being brave and also how to be preternaturally quiet and hard to detect it also messed up his knee crazy bad molekin magic healed up his wound just fine but unfortunately the magic started degrading after michael returned to the real world leaving him struggling with an increasingly less cooperative knee and a series of hip and lower back problems that followed along with his attempts at trying to as it were walk it off ironically it took a return to the world of magic for michael to start taking care of himself by starting to use a cane thus mitigating the collateral damage to the rest of his body and evening out his gait a bit as fate or at least the author would have it this is about the same time michael started his career as a reluctant crime lord knowing that his position as the leader of the crime ring known only as the organization is quite tenuous and that the changes he wishes to make within it are bound to not always be popular michael decided to use his needing a cane as a feature not a bug michael seeks to do this by amassing a large collection of otherwise identical canes with different hidden weapons in them the logic being that if his potential enemies can never be sure of what sort of equipment he s bringing to any given situation it ll give him an edge in any attempted assassinations his first and favorite cane holds a hidden sword made out of light absorbing metal but he also have canes that transform into a short spear a segmented staff break apart into a knuckle duster and a stick one whose head is a magic powered grappling hook and one for extreme emergencies only that vibrates ever so faintly and always feels warm to the touch michael keeps expanding his collection in part as a measure of his own anxiety in part to keep his prospective enemies guessing in general i aim to include more characters needing various aids to move and function in my writing as time goes on in thereafter i like running on a maybe t...
