to learn from the instruction written and oral of others the case of jewish suffering and privation at the hand of nazi self aggrandisement and cruelty as falling within that realm of the impossible to express simply exposes my own inadequacies as a wordsmith to convey the horror and obscenities of those times the dispossession of life physically socially psychologically and economically and takes no account of the literary genius of w g sebald and its attractive ready accessibility extremes one supposes require extreme language yet sebald grounds his vision in the unlikely shared interest of the principal narrator with his hero austerlitz who takes over the bulk of the narrative in the architecture and adornments of a major railway station in antwerp and which seem along with the barrenness and decay of railway termini in london and paris to be metaphors for the loss of his identity as a small child when he was sent to england by his mother to escape oppression and danger thus austerlitz seamlessly describes in various conversations in london and europe the geography meticulous planning and spiritual and moral degradation of modern germany unable to read the work in the original german i draw comfort that no translator can ignore the lengthy sentences the absence of chapters and the use of but two paragraphs throughout assisted only by sporadic disturbing barely relevant monochrome photographs sebald s own which provide a kind of sub narrative and jerk the reader again into the text lest he lose concentration virtually imperceptible passage from one description or proposition to the next is enough to maintain attention though enhanced by an architectural sensibility and to heighten curiosity enabling the reader fully to grasp the pain and despair the novel becoming a document to inform of the especial depths to which humanity can plunge yet render them speakable by the device of shifting the narration sebald shows how words are a sufficient medium for his purpose and the principal narrator becomes a surrogate reader we learn how austerlitz was adopted by a welsh clergyman and his wife who both lost their minds of his ghastly adolescence at an english boarding school redeemed by an inspired teacher of military history who disclosed austerlitz s true name hitherto concealed to him and enabled him to achieve his intellectual potential and an education at oxford in tracing his life story austerlitz nevertheless gives exquisite descriptions of the welsh coast at barmouth which the reader then compares to soulless aspects of london paris and antwerp the journey takes him to europe to search for himself and the identity and fate of his parents the narrative shifts briefly to his nanny vera with whom he is remarkably reunited for she had not seen him since he fled and she expounds telling insights into the phenomenon of nazi germany broaching the taboo question of the deliberate responsibility of the german people as a whole for the catastrophe amid obsessional lust for power and belief in a mythical pre eminence austerlitz retakes possession recounting his continuing arid search and how he obtained a cassette of a much decimated copy of a propaganda film of theresienstadt an awful ghetto which the nazis dressed up as a pleasant resort to fool a red cross inspection when run in slow motion the film reveals a momentary image which vera was able to confirm was austerlitz s mother in paris austerlitz sought his father and met marie a librarian in the biblioteque nationale with whom he embarked upon what we can only assume is an unconsummated affair who accompanied him on part of his journey and is instrumental in his recovery from a mental breakdown austerlitz retraces his original escape to london in reenactment of that long ago railway journey with sebald s steadfast grip on reality supplemented by kafka s obscure fantasies on similar subject matter may we reject the dank sterility of irrational december 7 2012 by glenys and richard i found these two pictures of misty and her kitten herby misty was not only clever but beautiful and gentle when our daughter emily was fourteen she wanted a pet and we took on two black rescue kittens bow and cleo who are still with us as emily monopolised them i wanted my own kitten and we followed up a newspaper advert for misty she was bred by someone who specialised in birmans misty s father was a pedigree champion and was kept in a huge outside pen apparently they used to shower him for shows misty s mother was a moggy there were children in the household who had played with misty since she was born she was jumping all over the front room and so adorable that we simple had to have her she was not expensive compared with the 300 cost of the pure birmans as soon as we got her home the other cats hissed and gave her a few swipes across the nose but she was not daunted she once fell from an open upstairs window and survived we all loved playing with her and planned to have her neutered but before we did she got outside and found herself a boyfriend emily and i wondered if she was having kittens but richard said she wasn t then one day on arriving home from the office he found her alone with a two inch long ginger kitten what a surprise we all had including misty she loved this kitten so much carrying it in her mouth all over the house into the back of the airing cupboard and under the beds she knew she was not allowed on the beds so she used to get under the duvet or counterpane with herby she hid there often all you could see was this lump in the bed i think she did this in the neighbours beds as well she made a complete fool of herby so much so that he continued to suckle until he was nine months old much to our visitors amusement and disgust they were always locked together with paws entwined which is so obvious in these pictures herby was not that smart and when food was put down he tried to eat misty s first she became accomplished at using her paw to pull the dish away and towards her our neighbours were also much amused by misty one neighbour used to tell me how she had found misty lying in her airing cupboard on the newly washed linen she would invite herself into both our neighbours houses when one neighbour s cat could not eat its scrambled egg because it was too hot they found misty eating it she loved it when they had their annual horticultural association plant sale and jumped into all the cardboard boxes as well as making herself known only last year i overheard someone comment look there is that cat who comes every year when she was younger she often joined in on summer evenings when people had parties and would even get inside their houses i pretended i had not noticed if we had a party you had to be careful because although she was not allowed on the table she often jumped up and had to be pushed off but she continued to try we were always entertained by her antics she loved children more than anything and melody used to carry her around with her arms around her chest this summer misty basked in the sun and melody cuddled her even the neighbours grandchildren used to love playing with her and missed her when they moved house we have a separate passageway from our back door into the hall and there is a hidden high shelf near the door herby was strong and found he could climb up there one guy fawkes night he was scared of the fireworks and so richard made a rope ladder so the cats could all get up there one day i smelt something coming from the cupboard by the door and noticed all the cats looking down towards it i stored old boxes in the cupboard and a few cats cushions underneath the cupboard was slightly ajar and i started to search the boxes to find out what was smelling suddenly a huge black and white tom shot out from under all the boxes in a dreadful state while all eight eyes of our cats watched from above this tom cat had followed misty in through the cat flap got into the cupboard and sat on a cushion i had piled more boxes on top so he could not get out his smell saved him misty was a wonderful hunter so we had to fit her with a bell to warn other animals but she still caught frogs from the pond and we often found them legless in the passageway she could also catch and eat mice successfully but when herby tried he simply brought them into the house alive and dropped them many a time i found myself chasing a mouse while all the cats watched misty was faster than me but i had to catch it first to save its life last summer we went camping and told emily there was no need to call and feed the cats since we would only be away five days and i would leave loads of iams dried food out for them as i always did in the passageway the trouble was i had cleaned the cat flap the day before and forgot to unlock it when we came home and i noticed none of the food was eaten i wondered if we would find them all dead in the back garden they all looked extremely thin but were alive misty had killed a pigeon or two whose feathers were all over the lawn the neighbours also placed dishes of food in their front drive after misty had been around meowing with herby until they then realised what had happened a few months earlier she and herby had cuddled up in my small greenhouse to catch the warm sun and i closed the door as it got dark the following day i saw them both meowing to get out misty often got shut in our neighbours sheds or even garages and never learnt her lesson we have a fox prowling round that kills cats a few weeks ago we watched as misty chased him off she became ill a few months after herby died and we first noticed her in a trance and not eating i fed her with cat malt extract and water in an eye dropper and she recovered only to have several what seemed to be strokes one day when she became lame in a back leg we decided to take her to the vet s one of my small garden wicker baskets which she loved squeezing into was perfect for the trip she had often climbed into the car when younger and loved looking out of the windows i sat with her while she looked out of the window from one side to the other enjoying the outing at the vet s we luckily got the elderly vet who loves cats he got her to walk around but of course she seemed fine he said there was nothing wrong with her other
