3 2014 by glenys and richard thomas mann time and my friend i received today an email from an old schoolfriend ignore his modesty he is stupendously clever and has a lifetime of outstanding achievement osf i am trying belatedly to refine my mind by reading a better quality of book richard in reading the magic mountain by thomas mann the following thoughts were triggered in the magic mountain thomas mann discusses the paradox that dull days when nothing much happens seem to chug along with excruciating slowness at the time yet afterwards that same period in your life seems to have passed in a flash conversely exciting days pass all too quickly at the time but stretch out luxuriously in our memory we measure time on looking back by events recalled the more we recall the more ticks of the clock the slower time seems to have passed as a child events cut deeper into the vinyl of our memory banks and time passes more slowly as we get older and remember less time seems to fly as a child we project future time from past time with our crowded memories a weekend seemed to stretch ahead like an eternity richard do you read german are they different books the originals and the translations i have made a note to read some thomas mann my mind certainly requires a lot of refining after reading your reflections about time i have to ask you if time is nothing but a human invention its physical reality existing only in the brain that would make all experiences including memories in the present or am i way off beam if there is no time and all we experience is motion then i have to wonder about space for there is nothing about that or its measurement that is independent of motion are the dimensions of time and space therefore convenient figments of the imagination used to describe motion if so what a productive leap of the imagination einstein s notion of space time and time dilation effects highlight the inadequacies of prior descriptions and call into question our very ideas of space and time i see similar issues have recently been mooted by quantum theorists do we need some new basis for describing motion all measurement depends on distinguishing the harmonies of motion from the discords again subjective if you used the axiom of time you d call them simultaneous events whatever that means or am i showing the signs of advanced senility put me straight it is urgent i m beginning to enjoy these delusions osf i wish i did read german richard we have been through the concept of time and yet again we are in a agreement it is highly subjective at least as far as personal experience is concerned so time exists only as part of the equation rate of motion distance time time has no independent existence correct the magic mountain is set in a swiss sanatorium for people suffering from tb before there was effective treatment it proceeds at a leisurely pace but you do feel that you are being guided by a highly intelligent person i read a few chapters and then read something else for a change before going back to it but it welcomes me back quite warmly and i don t find that i have lost track of the plot because there really isn t one i from agonising self examination abstract meanderings and quasi political anxieties nevil shute s trustee from the toolroom is just the ticket characterisation may be a little wooden but circumstance confers depth keith is a practical engineer of humble background who has learned on the job happily married though childless his wealth and earnings are meagre he makes miniature models in his basement writes for an enthusiasts publication and corresponds with his readers worldwide he has never been out of england his sister has done rather better and is married to a retired naval lieutenant they take it upon themselves to sail half way round the world with a view to settling in vancouver leaving their ten year old daughter in the temporary care of keith and his wife in what he regards as an ensuing legal obligation though beyond normal expectation keith leaves suburban london and travels to an uninhabited pacific coral island he has hardly any money and has to arrange a free air trip to honolulu and two thousand miles onwards a lift from an illiterate seafarer with no formal knowledge of navigation who has sailed from san francisco in a sloop he designed and built himself the trip home includes afternoon tea in washington state the writing is immaculate and can be beautiful even the technical engineering details and intricacies of sailing make compelling reading to me largely incomprehensible though shall i say the novel is somewhat naive in its story line it is subtle too for the plot takes all the tiny threads and ties them up securely except for one perhaps in authentic hollywood tearjerker style yes i have to say i shed a few tears and was left with important reflections on wealth duty reward deference with dignity and happiness though conscious of his name i knew nothing of nevil shute wikipedia tells me he was a popular writer and also after leaving oxford university as nevil shute norfolk a highly successful engineer who formed programme with archaeological digs since no archaeological evidence of the battle of hastings has ever been found english heritage invited the programme to dig at battle abbey time team also also did a survey and assessment of caldbeck hill a nearby challenge to the traditional site but virtually ignored nick austin s work at crowhurst the results were aired a couple of weeks ago and archaeology perfectionist that i suppose was why his daughter s choice of husband rankled so no screw left he unscrewed no smear on a wineglass no appointment missed an impossible standard to follow and he knew it on retirement he took to restoring pioneer motorbikes with relish he travelled around the countryside calling in at remote farmsteads searching under hedges and pulling at rusted pieces of metal with faithfully rendered delight he scoured the classified advertisement columns formed liaisons with the like minded and conducted negotiations at which he was a master to secure for himself that missing component in order to complete his to me motley collection of parts soon he led me to his workshop to view this innocent mound of scrap preening himself in carefully measured pride this is
