ov at some point in the near future and had heard good things about this short story luke thompson became one of my favourite actors and narrators recently as i liked crime and punishment it was nice to dip back into dostoevsky white nights was a very well written story about a dreamer in unrequited love if i had read this 20 years ago i would have been knocked over by a feather since i could see a younger version of myself in the nameless protagonist beautiful prose and some good one liners including a great last line the second half of this little novel has another short story called bobok bed and it was nice bedtime reading because it was just boring enough i found it easy to read it was short and i agreed with a lot of strunk s points about clear writing some things have changed in actually gasped at the twist because i enjoyed the writing poirot was challenged more than once in this one and the reader is shown more of his methodology the criminal was quite clever and evaded poirot and the reader well june 27 june 8 2026 the land and its people essays by david sedaris narrator this collection of essays were all performed live while i prefer the intimacy of being read them by the author sedaris seems to view himself more as an entertainer the laughing was not too obtrusive at least over the years i ve read most of the author s essay collections and the recent ones show how very privileged and rich he has become he does acknowledge this indirectly and still pokes fun at other wealthy people i still find most of the essays amusing and listening to them was great for yesteryear by caro claire burke what an odd book the beginning and some of the writing of this debut had promise i went in open minded that it would be a satire and that i would not like any of the characters i ve read enough litfic even though the book was propulsive and a relatively quick read the execution of the story and characters were lacking it dragged at times natalie s unlikeability and unreliability as a narrator were excessive the reader does not like the character but the author disliked the character even more while it started as a satire the novel s twist and second half devolved into a bizarre portrayal of a woman with psychological problems i had a lot of questions about the plausibility of the twist caleb was a stereotype archetype at first but became a plot tool for the author to push the narrative along i was underwhelmed june 2 4 2026 partially on kobo clara bw l amour fleurit ici by amy adele french picture book which was really basic and very much meant reasons yoona time travel and food each of these things alone is not enough but all three meant i had to try it i have not watched a kdrama of my own volition in years my husband has watched more kdramas in the last few years than i have so we watched this one together most of this 12 episode series were narrative cooking competitions a couple of the episodes were apothecary diaries style mysteries all throughout the series were asian historical drama scheming plots i liked the ensemble even though some of the chinese acting in the ming china subplot was not great to listen to and my mandarin is bad there were just too many subplots and i could tell they had to cut some of them down for time i think the two leads had chemistry but i did not feel like we got to know why yoona s character would fall for the king they did not bake the romance enough the ending was typical kdrama and explained nothing all creatures great and small 2020 s5 we needed to catch up and watched from late march with the 2024 christmas special and s5 i am really glad this show has been renewed for two more seasons since it s the perfect evening show for us it was cozy gentle and humane the residence funny and enjoyable christie esque murder miniseries very good production values and great casting as expected from the new shondaland i did think it went on a wee bit long especially the finale which did not need to be almost 1 5 hours i d watch another detective cupp show the darling buds of may i really liked this in particular the three leads david jason pam farris and catherine zeta jones the whole casting was great including the kids i wish the series had been longer even though the writing was not as good once they stopped adapting from the books i wish there more cozy shows like this it was well shot and so wholesome agatha christie s poirot we watched the first couple of episodes from 1989 great art nouveau set design we will probably watch more through the year as we go through the novels agathie christie s marple i watched a couple of these marples when they first aired and remembered at the ending of the first episode the body in the library that they changed a lot of things from the books amongst other things they made some of characters queer and the endings were more salacious i do like geraldine mcewan we watched a few based on the stories we had listened to or that i had read including murder at the vicarage at bertram s hotel pocket full of rye the moving finger ordeal by innocence and the blue geranium rick and morty s9 one of my favourite shows in recent years i actually watch this show for the character development and writing the voice acting is great as well the animation budget went up this season as well fifa world cup de miffy by dick bruna miffy was more interesting to me in this book because i love gardening june 28 2026 klara and the sun by kazuo ishiguro this was my second ishiguro of the year after the buried giant and i liked this more klara s first person narrative was so well done in its mix of astute observations and purity i was fascinated by her insights on the humans around her and her adulation for the sun i enjoyed reading about klara s relationships with all the characters especially rick ishiguro s plots and settings are different from one novel to the next but he has many familiar themes this one included his staples of aging sacrifice memory and a belief in higher power or values the ending left me feeling dissatisfied i understood why it ended the way it did and it was consistent with ishiguro s writing since he always has melancholic endings i was more attached to klara in general as i have a thing for robot characters i liked that she had peace at the end which most ishiguro martha wells i find murderbot books cozy even though they have so much tension and action murderbot is a funny and relatable character and wells continues to build their character development through the series it s great character writing i like that most instalments of this series are slightly different than the last one in terms of type of adventure this one was a long journey to safety through a dangerous and strange landscape an unpopular opinion but i am not a big fan of art so i was glad they were barely in this one and it was mostly murderbot and humans june 18 22 2026 on kobo libra 2 the lost bookshop by evie woods dnf at 69 pages 16 recently the topic of perspectives in novels came up in the reading glasses podcast and i contemplated and read discussions around it first person narratives are very hard to do well third person gives authors more room and are generally more forgiving bad or mediocre first person perspectives often ends being a lot of telling rather than showing this was the case here the narratives of the three main characters were dull and 1921 opaline s voice was very similar to the modern ones as a reader i was told a lot of their circumstances but i did not feel interested in any of them if anything i was a bit irked there was an insta love romance with the two modern characters who also felt a bit stupid as well i did not read enough to know more about the magical realism or the actual premise of the book store that should have come earlier than the shoddy character writing june 23 25 2026 black coffee by agatha christie and charles osborne john moffatt narrator as we are going through the poirot novels chronologically this was 7 originally written as a play the christie estate commissioned charles osborne to adapt it into a novel i read reviews that this was not a great adaptation as a result it was not that bad it was a locked room mystery and was a short novel hastings appeared to be more bumbling than usual it was not 16 2026 in books at bertram s hotel a bbc radio 4 full cast dramatisation by agatha christie adapted by michael bakewell and narrated by a full cast this was a radio play instead of the audiobooks we had been listening to it was abridged as a result i did not want to listen to the whole novel as i read it 16 years ago but did not remember the ending we listened to it after watching the itv marple of the episode and there were some changes the itv episode was better than this radio play which was really heavy on the exposition through dialogue marple was even more of a busybody than usual in this version since she was eavesdropping everywhere at least we now know these radioplays are not great for us and will avoid them june 9 16 2026 atmosphere by taylor jenkins reid this was excellent as usual from taylor jenkins reid her novels are easy to read but not shallow or insipid they always offer interesting characters and relationships i like her lead characters even if i do not relate to them this was a very well done sapphic love story i became invested in joan and vanessa s relationship i liked the space plot i preferred this protagonist to the one in project hail mary the ending made me wish i had more time with the characters june 14 16 2026 partially on kobo libra 2 the god of the woods by liz moore i wanted to like this more and there was some very good writing here i do not think it was as good as the hype let me believe then again it was still better written than most modern day thrillers i liked the literary focus on the characters and the 1970s camp setting was done well it was tense which is why i am not a big fan of thrillers and there was lots of sexism a lot of the characters were sketched out well but i only wish there had been a more emotionally from certain characters like tracey judyta and louise overall it was a well written novel and i would consider reading more from the author june 17 20 2026 partially on kobo clara bw turning to birds a memoir in essays by lili taylor narrator this was a nice birding book to listen to as i walked and gardened it was reflective of the author s experience as a birder i did learn about the controversy about house sparrows from this book which made me really wonder what i would have done in taylor s point of view she actively actually tried to kill them the world of birding becomes more and more narrator this christie novel was one of the better ones maybe since we jumped into a novel written into a 1950s novel but the quality of the writing here was one step higher than the 1930s poirots and the 1940s marples we ve been reading this was much more of a psychological thriller i do not like thrillers but the way christie wrote the insights of the characters was well done may 27 june 8 2026 moi qui n ai pas connu les hommes i have who have never known men by jacqueline harpman lola naymark narrator i read and listened to this in tandem in the original french it took me 2 5 weeks to finish it i am much slower in french than in english and i am not completely fluent listening to it tandem with the audiobook helped my french practice i understood about 80 90 of each page at first i was not able to appreciate the prose fully but it got easier around the halfway mark i do not like reading dystopian novels so the lack of world building details or explanation was fine with me i am also not a plot reader and the plot here was limited the book was more reflective and philosophical it centred on what it is like to be human being and a woman at a base level it had a lot on isolation and the human condition there were a lot of meanderings about life i was neither satisfied nor dissatisfied with the ending i liked the language and the character work especially considering
