Text of the page (random words):
omething that didn t match an earlier one which could be nothing or something i vote for nothing anyways i had a lot of time to think about this and i needed to tell you all medical procedures are nothing like what they show on television at all i ve had seven surgeries all of them the kind that they wheel you into an operating theatre and you have to go under general anesthetic i ve had five procedures which put you in a sleepy haze that which is also a kind of anesthetic but they need you to be semi conscious i ve had three root canals two teeth pulled and two dental implants here s some medical thoughts i ve had about what i ve been through most of the surgeries i ve needed were on waitlists that ranged from weeks to years most of them were non priority non urgent procedures so things take time and emergencies always come first for more pressing issues they can sometimes schedule you in for the following week or so when i needed emergency surgery it happened that same day they rushed me forward to make sure i was treated first when headed to the er you are always triaged if you walk in on your own feet they assess your symptoms and why you re there when i was in the worst pain of my life because of a serious emergency i was moved straight to the front of the line when i ve gone in with less immediate concerns i ve waited like 8 10 hours for treatment or for all the tests to be completed bloodwork scans x rays urine tests whatever they need to figure me out some people think if they go in at a slow time they will get seen more quickly i have never experienced a slow time and you really have to accept that if you have had the ct x ray blood tests and everything else and they still don t know what s wrong they usually will tell you to follow up with your gp and sometimes send you home with a prescription for mild pain medication they will do nothing else except forward the notes i have had this dozens of times you do have to know that doctors don t really sit around in big groups discussing your case like it s some giant medical puzzle i have a lot of health issues but i have never been put in front of a team of doctors like in house where everyone is devoted to solving one mysterious problem there are dozens of people waiting for treatment at any given moment in the er having four or five doctors focused on a single patient would be absolutely moronic people analyze notes of other people usually it s a doctor a nurse a tech and maybe a specialist consulting for a minute or two while also managing several other patients at once they pass along information for other people to add to and make a decison it bothers me that tv makes everything feel so dramatic and tense my sister is a nurse and she s been in the or a bunch of times she says some doctors play music to help them relax during procedures sometimes people crack jokes other times it s just business as usual get the job done like they are doing any other routine task they ve done a million times and honestly a lot of standard surgeries especially with a surgeon who performs them all the time take less than an hour mostly because they re done laparoscopically that means just a few small incisions for a camera and specialized tools that are so by the book and done a dozen times a day that these surgeons can do them in their sleep something else that bugs me on tv the or is always dimly lit with dramatic backlighting and giant spotlights every time i ve gone under it s been in a bright clinical room the operating spaces are also much smaller than tv makes them look because come on hospitals need every bit of space they can get and there are a lot of operating rooms for one procedure i had it was basically done in a curtained off cubicle beside a bunch of other curtained off cubicles since i was awake and it wasn t a long procedure that was considered perfectly fine another thing to note just like operating rooms mri machines are way smaller than tv makes them seem they re incredibly loud the table vibrates and you absolutely cannot move i had this big plastic hockey mask looking thing over my face with padding around my head to keep me still the worst part of the whole thing was having an itchy nose i m not claustrophobic but i can absolutely understand why someone who is would be super uncomfortable it was loud and pounding like being at a disco construction site inside a coffin they usually last 20 to 40 minutes ct scans are a bit different i ve had so many i should probably be glowing they often require you to hold your breath at certain points relax at others but they re nowhere near as restrictive as an mri and they take much less time maybe five minutes and finally hospital beds are way smaller than they look on tv definitely smaller than a twin bed i ll see people on tv with two people cuddling comfortably in a hospital bed and i m always confused where on earth did they find that enormous bed anyways i was feeling a bit anxious about the mri thing and what the results would be i m sure it is nothing but i ll keep you all posted enjoy my rant just blabber medical chat nothing too gruesome tw health 1 day to my therapist recently we were discussing the difference between anxiety and discomfort and how people misunderstand these words discomfort is things that you would prefer not to talk or think about something that disgusts you a bias an unappealing feeling like awkwardness or irritation something that causes tension something that is annoying a sensation or situation that is taxing anxiety is primarily a medical psychological diagnosis things that will make you panic things that make your heart beat faster and adrenaline to spike the feelings are much more physiological than mental something that impedes on your ability to function in certain situations leaves you unable to do many daily tasks ptsd is a kind of anxiety what else is not anxiety nervousness a feeling of uneasiness and concern you may be uncertain and it may take on physiological symptoms but does not affect the daily living of your life alertness being aware that something bad may happen in a logical place where something bad may happen adhd and restlessness the inability to focus or the feeling of being overwhelmed which can be regulated with dopamine management depression this goes hand in hand with anxiety but is not the same thing it is caused by a complex mix of genetic biological environmental and psychological factors including lowered heartrate and fatigue where anxiety causes rapid heartrate being offended when words concepts or beliefs are contrast with what you believe is correct or moral though this is a personal definition and does not necessarily apply to a greater population squick something you dislike or are repelled by but do not have any moral judgement over broadly triggers originally intended to protect survivors of serious issues violence sexual abuse etc to unexpected exposure to sensitive topics but now broadened to mean anything that makes something unappealing think of it this way if you can still do the thing even though it is difficult or uncomfortable it is not anxiety it is not necessary to make sweeping moral judgments about an author a subject or an idea simply because it makes you personally uncomfortable that s on you not everyone else imagine if william shakespeare had written only subjects made people happy and comfortable titus andronicus contains a scene where two sons are murdered baked into pies and served to their mother it is grotesque disturbing but intentionally so messed up but unnecessary to ban totally no justification to do so but why is that okay is it only because it is literature from hundreds of years ago no it is because talking about these subjects is fine it is also because discussing terrible violent or disturbing subjects is just part of human expression full stop if discomfort alone were grounds for full on censorship then we might as well ban all of television then reach for anything with just general conflict fairy tales mythology and the study of history itself history is in many ways a long sequence of gruesome events telling yourself i can do hard things is not cruelty it is resilience growth totally requires discomfort learning requires challenge figuring things out on your own avoiding everything that could cause you distress does not make you safer it makes you genuinely less capable of coping if you convince yourself there are monsters under your bed eventually you will start living as though they are real constant protection from discomfort can turn ordinary stumbles into something that feels entirely overwhelming you are literally doing that to yourself if the subject is causing you harm you have my sympathies if you are too upset that you cannot breathe you vomit your heart feels like it is going to explode because it is racing so fast and you have to literally call an ambulance i understand that is anxiety and should be taken seriously but there is also a danger in treating every form of discomfort as though it were a medical condition anxiety is real serious and deserving of care but when ordinary discomfort is mislabeled as anxiety the term becomes diluted that makes it harder for people with genuine clinical anxiety to be taken seriously and to receive the support they actually need learn to do the hard things it will help you grow it is possible to overcome i forgot to add something anxiousness and anxiety are not necessarily the same thing i could be anxious about going to the dentist i could be anxious about driving in the dark that is more akin to nervousness than anxiety true story separating those feelings is healthy anecdotal evidence from the biosphere 2 project suggests that in a protected environment trees will not grow enough stress wood to survive elements when grown in an environment without the elements this may be a very simplified concept with a convenient metaphor but the metaphor is pretty solid do the hard thing just blabber 2 days ago barachiki 22 permalink share short url twitter facebook
