appropriate that i took a long road trip to visit the grave of jack kerouac in edson cemetery lowell massachusetts kerouac is probably best known for his novel on the road which along with ginsberg s howl kicked off the beat generation as i drove along the interstate highways i thought about how different his road trips across the country had been traveling along what we now call back roads no chain fast food drive thrus every city town and village distinct much as i love road trips and his novel i m more enamored with his poetry specifically his american haiku he wrote the american haiku is not exactly the japanese haiku the japanese haiku is strictly disciplined to seventeen syllables but since the language structure is different i don t think american haikus short three line poems intended to be completely packed with void of whole should worry about syllables because american speech is something again bursting to pop above all a haiku must be very simple and free of all poetic trickery and make a little picture and yet be as airy and graceful as a vivaldi pastorella here are three of my favorites nightfall boy smashing dandelions with a stick all day long wearing a hat that wasn t on my head missing a kick at the icebox door it closed anyway and here s a recording of him reciting his haiku with a jazz accompaniment edson cemetery is a rather normal working class 20th century cemetery no fancy carvings but they labelled the lanes within the grounds as if they were streets keroauc s grave is near the corner of lincoln and 7th brilliant jack kerouac 1922 1969 the road is life posted in dead poets tagged cemetery edson kerouac lowell massachusetts 22 comments in the poetry vending machine posted on 2026 08 10 by bartholomew barker i put myself on display watch growled in that exquisite ear your back arched like a bolt across the night sky and floods came sweeping away debris clearing storm drains of trivialities gone as the clouds revealed the stars your memory lingers in the morning sun a humid mist rising from the pavement i never thought i d live this long without you for the monday poetry prompt and the muse who ll never read what she inspired
