congregation it was mainly used to keep records of education and passing different christian rituals the finnish lutheran church has kept these books from the early 1700s a communion book page from lammi vicarage around the time of the story the church was in charge of providing education and maintaining information about the census data births deaths marriages occupations and residence of the parishioners the details of baptisms marriages and deaths were recorded in their own books but the communion book was used to store things that were less permanent up to the early 20th century it was mandatory to take holy communion at least once a year and if you had any sins on your conscience you were expected to confess them first the book is called the communion book because it was used to keep track how often the people took these holy communions and confessions in 1918 it was no longer exactly punishable to skip them but it was frowned upon so most still followed the tradition closely the priest s home at lammi the one where our characters visit in the epilogue a single book was usually in use for about 7 to 10 years and the information could be added and updated every time a person participated certain religious events or otherwise visited the priest these are the books crowley referred early on in the story in the very first part what does the j stand for then crowley burst out laughing i m still not telling you that he said it was an old joke between them azirafel could easily find it out if he went to peek into the books at the vicarage but he hadn t every parish in western finland was divided into villages or districts and each village had several pages in the book to contain all the houses of the area smaller farms or crofts might have shared a page while bigger ones had several dedicated to them to fit in all the servants and crofts if people moved around inside the parish the priest copied their information under their new residence work place marked which page they came from and crossed their name from the old page with a note that they have moved to the new page if a person were to move from one parish to another they were expected to ask for a moving letter which contained this information from their old parish as a signed document the old parish marked them as moved to lahti or something and crossed them over this is one reason vappu and lauri couldn t just switch their parish and get married elsewhere it could be done without the moving letter but not in secret a bible reading event in 1940s notice the rya behind the participants in these events the priest often also updated the book the way the moves are marked in the book have been very important tool for the genealogy enthusiasts over the years because that way you could follow your ancestor s life and their growing family the farm owner s name appears first on the list he was responsible for the payment of taxes his wife children elderly parents as well as farmhands servants maids charity residents etc were recorded on the rows below them it was a common practice to leave empty lines between the family and servants to keep them separated but also to leave room for the growing family an example page from a communion book from late 1800s listing the tenants and servants of two crofts it s a page number 87 the village is called iso sattiala and the house is mäkelä the two crofts who pay rent for mäkelä house are called hasela and ahola hasela has the tenant couple and a couple of empty rows before two maids one crossed over since they have moved away hasela has just the family but the priest has decided to leave an empty row above every daughter close to the marrying age to leave room for their future husbands one daughter maria aurora is listed twice as they had moved out and then returned i could prattle on about what each of these markings mean but maybe that s going too deep into unnecessary details but ask me if you want to know fun or not so fun fact is that these books often also included random notes the priest has seen important to record like she has been reprimanded for having a child out of wedlock or punished for public drinking if you do genealogy and aren t from a wealthy upperclass family these little tidbits are often the only things you learn from your ancestors beyond dates numbers and locations i wonder what stone and or bricks and it doesn t have the chimney do not attempt to warm smoke sauna unless you know how to do that there are all kinds of risks for you and the sauna if it s done carelessly and don t follow these instructions i have never heated one myself either first rule is to be slow and patient you add wood slowly one or two logs at the time and you heat the stove not the room keep the fire properly alive to lessen the smoke produce but don t overdo it smoke sauna doesn t have a chimney so when heating you keep doors and vents open you must not let the smoke hang too low or touch the heated stones because smoke gas can get explosive you keep heating until the stones start glow red then you wait until the embers in the fireplace stop glowing before closing the lid doors and windows and whatever vents you ve opened the stove then heats the room i m not entirely sure if you are supposed to clean up the coal and embers from the stove before or after this period but that s also a
