authors netgalley edelweiss or publishers as well as gifts or books you won continue reading stacking the shelves may 10 2026 may 10 2026 13 the confessions of frannie langton by sara collins bookreview audiobook bookclub televisionadaptation the confessions of frannie langton by sara collins published may 21st 2019 by harper audiobook harpercollins publishers they say i must be put to death for what happened to madame and they want me to confess but how can i confess what i don t believe i ve done 1826 and all of london is in a frenzy crowds gather at the gates of the old bailey to watch as frannie langton maid to mr and mrs benham goes on trial for their murder the testimonies against her are damning slave whore seductress and they may be the truth but they are not the whole truth for the first time frannie must tell her story it begins with a girl learning to read on a plantation in jamaica and it ends in a grand house in london where a beautiful woman waits to be freed but through her fevered confessions one burning question haunts frannie langton could she have murdered the only person she ever loved 4 stars the confessions of frannie langton is set in both jamaica and england as the book opens we find frannie arrested for the murders of both george and marguerite benham did she kill them how did she get there frannie is born in paradise plantation a mulatto daughter of phibbie the kitchen maid and the master she is brought to live in the house when she is a young girl much to the dislike of miss bella the mistress of the house she is taught to read and write and then forced to work with scientist john langton who is experimenting on his slaves when the plantation burns langton s brother in law throws him out and he leaves for england with frannie in tow he arrives at george benham s home a british scientist who he wanted to publish his works benham throws him out but allows frannie to stay as a servant in his home frannie falls in love with madame marguerite meg benham and they have an affair how did they get from a love affair to murder this book contains a lot of heavy issues and i had a tough time reading this one i switched to the audio part way through but kept the book handy as i had to refer to it and reread a few passages here and there frannie was a complex character once she arrives in england she is technically free as slavery had been abolished but she had nowhere to go no money and knew no one she was blindsided when langton gave her to benham she was treated poorly worse than when she lived on the plantation until she and meg became friends than more marguerite meg was a troubled character she was addicted to laudanum and extremely selfish she thought she had married a rich man not the second son the story is told in flashbacks as it starts with frannie s arrest some of what she shares about the plantation is gruesome it reminded me of what the german s were doing to the jewish people in the camps frannie s defense barrister used somnambulism a form of non insane automatism that was first used in the u s by a black man and was the inspiration for the novel issues of slavery infidelity class structure medical atrocities racism and even the problems in the legal system on touched on i can t say that i enjoyed this book but i did like the writing and it really made me think it has been made into a tv mini series which i watched and did like more than the book if you are interested in historical fiction specifically slavery and all that goes with it as well as racism that was occurring all over the world at the time then i definitely recommend this book book club this was my first book club with people i didn t know and i wasn t sure what to expect but i enjoyed it our discussion was lively and it was split as to those who enjoyed the book and those who were not impressed i was in the middle some of the comments made were comparing why frannie stayed with the benhams when she was technically free to why battered women stay with their husbands a lot of talk about the belief that blacks were not human didn t feel pain and that it didn t batter if they were worked to death the experimentation on humans was not talked about a lot due to the unpleasant nature drugs specifically laudanum and how so many women were given this drug to calm them was equated to women being institutionalized for hysteria of course i then recommended liberty street by heather marshall to the group as it is part of our canadian history topics of how do we want to be remembered when we are gone writing our own obituary and the many changes that have come to the present day legal system were all touched on i am already looking forward to next month where our book will be little fires everywhere by celeste ng a book that has been on my tbr shelf for a long time britbox iptv adaptation in 2022 this book was adapted into a 4 part mini series starring karla simone spence and sophie cookson i really enjoyed it and it clarified a few things that i had missed or was confused about in the book i know that dramatic license meant that there were some changes from the book but i liked what had been changed the romance scenes between frannie and meg were well done and tasteful and the experimenting in jamaica was touched on but not in detail that made it more palatable to watch overall i enjoyed watching the adaptation and i think that helped me to understand the book better and rate it a bit higher check out the trailer below may 9 2026 18 happy friday positivity wave may 8
