exercise sets such as this 1 the ideal is stressed rather than the practical or minimum effective dose 2 reptition numbers are often bizarrely precise with no reasoning as to why they even exist take the xishuigong for example in dr yang s book he mentions having litttle kids biting your joints at midnight since that s the most effective time to practice this is such bizarre advice that it strains the credibility of anyone who wrote it leave out the obvious reference to children biting a grown man s joints for a moment pedophilia and focus on the time it makes it sound like if you can t practice at exactly midnight that you shouldn t practice at all that s absurd like working out for fitness the best time is the time that you will actually do the practice if that s 10am because you have time then then so be it maybe it s only 90 as effective as doing it at 12 00 but 90 is obviously better than 0 and yet you never hear this kind of common sense advice same thing with length of practice obviously things like xishuigong need practice and i think that gets left out ofthe equation most of the time you need time to practice this stuff and afterwards it takes less time but this isn t usually mentioned in books or in teaching settings i sometimes feel these time requirements are put out there for other purposes like scaring people off or in the case of some teachers as bragging rights obviously there is a maximum effective time for practice afterwhich you get little return but there is also a minimum effective dose to get a result one thing that catches my eye regarding this is that the baduanjin practice is a time sink you could spend a lot of time on it it could likely be broken off and practiced later in the day granted that is might only be say 80 as effective at that time but again that s better than not doing it at all other sets may take it s place depending on what one is doing there s also a problem with rep suggestions i always find it bizarre when for example you re told to do exactly 81 reps of something the wise ass in me never far from the surface always wants to know what will happen if i only do 80 reps will i somehow miss 100 of the results somehow i doubt that i think teachers say this stuff to get you to work hard but imo the reps should be based on what you feel and the feedback you get from your body rep counts are just suggestions there also seems to be a general discounting of the student using his own wisdom to decide what s best for him and instead relying on the lineage or the master as in every cma granted there are secrets in this like in everything else and we want to be respectful especially when swinging weights with your genitals but i think relying on common sense hopefully derived from decades of practicing cma and working out for fitness certainly has a place in the practice so take these hard and fast suggestions of time with a grain of salt and keep in mind that quality of practice beats quantity granted that quality takes some time to practice in order to perfect it final thought take recommendations for time required in practice in general when comparing different systems sinking time into learning something that you really won t be able to practice because you don t have enough time on a daily basis to do it wouldn tbe wise shop wisely for methods comments off on problems three basic components of fitness strength aerobic cardio and anaerobic cardio my general advice would be to not overtrain santi or the five fists the variety that they offer is not enough and if you train them seriously everyday you will likely overtrain them possible tendonitis without getting much in the way of fitness results you will also adapt to them fairly quickly meaning you get less fitness over time this is noticed by checking your heart rate the 12 animals and the forms are better strength training is hard with ma but dragon done with deep stances and the jumping kick comes to mind i would do the animals in wide long stances and emphasize stretching the techniques out to build power in the body for strength i don t like long pole exercises since they tend to be overdone and rely too much on delicate wrist elbow and shoulder muscles the moves are all too similar i prefer staff exercises and forms since they move a lot more especially double ended staff notice that footwork is involved in the staff forms where long pole rarely has that for aerobic and an aerobic conditioning i suggest the following all forms train an aerobic conditioning already they are fairly short after all do lines of the animals as basic conditioning and keep track of your heart rate all the while you re doing them if your heart rate gets above 150 after a line then wait until it drops to 120 or so before you do the next one at around 150 your performance will suffer and you will get exhausted if you aren t used to it training according to heart rate will give you feedback so you can gradually increase your volumeof training to continue getting results you ll notice some animals get your heart rate upmore than others so be smart in how they re combined by stacking easier animals after harder ones and you can train more volume take several of your forms and write the names on a white board or notebook do one round of a form at about 50 75 speed then put a hash mark after that form that s one rep wait about 30 1 00 until your heart rate slows down then do another rep of that form or do a seperate form s what we re doing now is taking an aerobic training and getting aerobic results from it this is great for fat loss you rest just enough to let the heart rate slow and you dont dothe forms at full speed and power unless you re at a high level of fitness try to get 30 40 reps of various forms in an hour for a good conditioning workout you don t need to do the same forms everyday either the next day do completely different forms if you have them so you don t overtrain certain movements if people have forms from multiple styles then that s even better mix the forms you do each day from various styles and you get a greater variety of stances stance height technique work flexibility etc all in one hour if you don t have enough xingyi forms di guo yong s hebei stuff is fairly standard and easy to pickup li tian ji s book has most of the forms and is available from andrea falk the biggest issue i ve seen with martial artists training for fitness is to get away from what the so called masters say and start using smart fitness programming you d get a lot more done in a short amount of time allowing folks to lose fat maintain their skills and stay within their styles this is how i trained cma at my gym so i can speak for its efficacy personally aikido and baguazhang have in common when applied nothing shows that clearer than jason delucia s combat aikido dvd series from panther video productions take a look at this clip there you go the clearest explanation of cup and saucer i ve seen and this is an application of taichi s part the wild horse s mane the whole series has many gems like this one it was delucia s attempt to introduce an ima system that could be used in an mma environment as a very experienced full contact fighter with a kungfu background delucia was a perfect fighter to work this hybrid i really feel for delucia he s fought a lot of folks and learned a ton of stuff but he s always the underdog and gets no respect in response to this series the mma crowd only wanted to know that he lost to royce twice as if losing to a man like that was dishonorable or a disgrace or something it would be the chance of a lifetime and a validation of your skill just to step in the ring with someone like royce the aikido community wouldn t even take a look at delucia s stuff they only wanted to know what dan rank he was and who was his teacher the quality and content of his ideas didn t matter a bit so delucia s ideas got thrown in the trashcan the series was obviously a work in progress it wasn t fully elaborated and didn t have everything you d want in an applied ima mma hybrid system but you can clearly see where he lives in this blog more than i knew so here s an update as you progress you go through periods of growth decline renewal etc many times these are unexpected and don t turn out the way you think they will the dark night of the soul is a good way to describe certain transitions along the path and they are never comfortable what happens is that everything comes crashing down everything that you thought was going to work does not the outcome you expected doesn t materialize the methods you had relied on fail you these things are basically life telling you it is high time for you to move on but you re still clinging to old ways you are going to pass through that phase and move on to the unexpected or you will continue to be miserable which one will you choose this often precedes a very big breakthrough and in fact is usually the only way a big breakthrough happens you won t reach that next stage until everything about the current one fails and the process involves a lot of pain in letting go going through this process is extremely personal it s intimate it s not for public discussion since it strikes at the very reason you were put here what kind of person are you going to become you have to protect this process if you want to stay sane i was very open some might say too open on this blog about the process of learning my art but that had to change when i reached this point the evolution became private and continues to be private fact is i don t practice what i did before the way i did before things have changed for me as they should for all of us what has changed and how will to some extent remain private those of you following me in the various other places i blog can catch occasional glimpses of what i m talking about one final thought if it doesn t sound too pompous as you transcend art your life becomes the art the technical minutia that communities are obsessed with discussing lose their meaning instead the definition of your art might expand to include other areas that you had previously excluded which might have lead to an extreme imbalance in your life regaining that balance brings perspective and understanding to your newly redefined art
