coyle who working a series of bizarre murders is led into a world of monsters operating in contemporary los angeles the always excellent c c h pounder is dr shauna kendall a professor up on the monster lore who becomes coyle s van helsing in horror movies this kind of very well worn ambulatory exposition encyclopedia can be a really thankless part but pounder tackles it with sincerity and then there are the monsters crispian grimes greg wise is a modern day dracula a wealthy vampire who owns a club called house of frankenstein has his own wolf man henchman carsten norgaard for carrying out dirty work and finances an ultimately successful arctic expedition to find the long lost frankenstein s monster peter crombie which he intends to keep on ice and use as no kidding an attraction at his club yeah it s that kind of movie the frankenstein monster on ice and thawed vampire grimes in more or less human form and in full monster form grace dawkins the breathtaking teri polo survives a werewolf attack becomes involved with coyle who is investigating that attack and becomes a werewolf herself grimes is soon infatuated with her as well who can blame him and proves a particularly pernicious suitor grace dawkins teri polo flashing werewolf eyes the werewolves of hof97 can be seen as a bit of a cheat screen werewolves are typically presented as some sort of human wolf hybrid a make up job or something the production s other creature creators cobble together but here the humans just shed a lot of mass and through the magic of crude cg morphing change into regular wolves in a bit of ham handed symbolism dawkins becomes a white wolf on the evening of her first transformation grimes in his bat man form which proves the creators had seen bram stoker s dracula carries off her monster form wolf the frankenstein monster doesn t much care for the modern world when grimes tries to enslave him he likes that even less the mini spends a lot of time setting up these conflicts then throws the characters against one another images rubber suited grimes confronts an enchained frankenstein monster a pov vampire vision shot of grimes as he flies around l a one of grimes undead henchmen grimes at the throat of dawkins coyle s police captain j a preston reacting to the film s plot the 1990s were a great era for cinema but generally a poor one for horror movies and house of frankenstein 97 sort of conforms to that stereotype it puts together a lot of talent and manages some noteworthy moments but it s definitely not a special movie it s played entirely straight and while irony in such a terminally self amused age really can begin to feel like the shackles of youth this could have benefited from a lot more of it it takes a modicum or more of creative spark to mold something memorable out of this kind of rubbed to nubbins material and there just isn t much of that here character motives are weak or non existent the characters themselves are rote and uninteresting visual flare is fleeting a lot of what the mini gives us is stuff we ve already gotten from other movies and gotten and gotten and gotten the original 1944 picture of the same name was the 2nd of universal s monster mash flicks a point when the studio had already skied over the selachimorpha when it came to its once formidable horror movies and its glory days of gothic gloom mythogenesis fading it was cutting budgets and creative corners while trying to maintain box office receipts by matching against one another their still profitable monsters letting the gimmick itself be the grunt work oddly enough the remake fits comfortably in that milieu one could argue it merits its obscurity but if like this writer one keeps warm a special dark cobweb bedecked cavern in one s tale embrace of the vampire after growing up in public over the course of wholesome sitcom who s the boss breathtaking alyssa milano decided to loudly declare her passage to adulthood by taking on a sexy vampire movie the innocence is over declares the movie s poster backing up milano are among others charlotte lewis as photographer sarah and in a part unusually small for her jennifer tilly some really solid casting and everyone is giving it their all but the movie badly needed a vampire martin kemp the bass player for spaundau ballet tries to fill the role he s credited as the vampire and never given a name but he s hopelessly outgunned by a mess of a script and creative direction that while giving him a character and story that could have been made to work has him delivering one inane howler after another directress goursaud had by this time been working as an editor for 17 years on films as diverse as chuck norris a force of one bram stoker s dracula and the night the lights when out in georgia this was her directorial debut and embrace is at its best when she has it successfully tapping the vein of the classic euro sex and horror pictures of the 60s and 70s powered by some outstanding photographic and editing decisions the film s world is repeatedly made to come unmoored and drift into an erotic fever dream until by the end that world has almost entirely become that dream there are remarkable moments that untether agreeable neurotransmitters and accelerate the atoms of one s extremities sarah s attempted seduction of milano s charlotte is particularly good that s also where the pictures repeatedly falls down though because bad creative decisions are allowed to creep in and puncture that atmosphere kemp s vampire is written and directed as without a trace of charm or humor and so overwrought melodrama serious that he looks in every moment he s on the screen as if he s on the verge of imploding or dropping instantly dead of a stroke which one would think would be quite a trick for a vampire who are you charlotte asks him i m your destiny he breathlessly replies with all the desperate hypertension fueled deadly earnest he can muster one needs to feel some smidgen of sympathy for the fellow and his plight for his part to work but it s hard to muster much when it s a such an incessant struggle to keep from bursting out in laughter it s artifice cranked up to 11 a dash of cold water that instantly brings one out of the dream the movie is trying to weave goursaud is also very music video in her approach at times which is at cross purposes with the rest of the picture the opening flashback begins as girl porn romance novel covers come to life then takes an intended darker turn that mostly just showcases the deleterious influence of bram stoker s dracula from a few years prior none of it works some of the later fantasy sequences of this species are the same way brightly lit painfully literal overdone and silly none of this had to be terminal to the project some different writing direction thespianan decisions could have reigned this in toned it down made it all work as more of a cohesive whole for those who appreciate embrace s dual genres gothic horror and sex picture its wrong turns can be frustrating it s a movie about which people often joke there s only one reason to watch this well two an assessment that is both unfair and that the movie often begs viewers to make at the same time it s also the case that many wouldn t even see these things as wrong turns most of the stuff about which i ve been complaining is a regular feature of these kinds of pictures and aficionados tend out of necessity to develop a high tolerance even sometimes an affection for them whereas i also guilty of aficionadodom think the movie when it works works very well and see these as failings that prevent it from being what it could have should have been i like embrace of the vampire i wish it left me with less to criticize j posted at eyebrow cinema a youtube channel i ve sometimes watched i came across a new essay by daniel simpson its proprietor regarding blade runner ridley scott s 1982 sci fi masterpiece built around the film s much commented upon love scene simpson calls his essay the blade runner scene everyone gets wrong then proceeds to himself get absolutely everything about the scene spectacularly wrong misreading this scene isn t new various people who fail to pay sufficient attention to the movie have with varying degrees of good faith misread it for over 40 years now but simpson s particular misreading leads him to wildly misread the rest of the film as well in a way that is both bizarre and in my experience unique fans of the film will be left scratching their heads in its wake rather than burden this with a lot of exposition i ll be relying on viewers having seen the movie simpson says the film s love scene represents a rather substantial blight on its legacy he quotes katy haber one of blade runner s production executives as saying that was not a love scene that was a hate scene and he agrees calling the scene an explicit act of violence and abuse underpinned by deckard s objectification of rachel eventually rachel goes along with deckard s sexual advances but only in response to deckard s violence and coercion in practice the scene depicts an assault with deckard physically imposing his will on rachel and only gaining a slim verbal permission through intimidation from there simpson enlarges his scope blade runner s hate scene is not an aberration from what is otherwise an uncritical romance it is a further expression of the violence integral to deckard s character his relationship with rachel and the broader narrative and themes of the film the dynamics of the deckard rachel relationship are not just inherently unequal but inherently hostile as deckard is a state appointed oppressor of rachel s people a killer of slaves who refuse to serve returning to the love scene he says beyond the explicit violence in the scene there is also the implied threat that if rachel refuses deckard she too will be killed for refusing to serve deckard as simpson sees it is an example of bigots lusting after the members of the marginalized group they hate deckard can want rachel yet still deny her autonomy and personhood as simpson portrays it deckard looks at rachel and thinks this is one that can benefit me by giving me what i want if this were a love scene simpson continues deckard couldn t turn around and continue murdering the members of rachel s community on the basis of existing leaving out that these particular replicants didn t just exist but had been on a murder spree killing by then the crew and all the passengers on the ship that brought them to earth crippling a cop and killing at least three others including the head of a major corporation and also leaving out why deckard is on this mission in the first place to which i ll return momentarily referring to deckard s final showdown with replicant leader roy batty simpson opines that in what deckard thinks will be his final moments before he dies he uses the last ounce of his strength to spit at roy still viewing this replicant as subhuman or perhaps just expressing some contempt for a fellow who just gleefully ran him to exhaustion then while standing over him watching him struggling for life and failing had just smugly grinned refuting simpson s read here doesn t really take anything more than watching blade runner that is in fact all it takes to deflate most of what he says about it in the vid one can confidently predict that fans of the movie who made their way here have been jumping out of their skins since they began reading my rundown of his analysis which depends on grinding under basically the entire film a central theme of br is what is human replicants are artificially created but they re not robots not mechanical soulless plates of metal and plastic welded together in a factory they re flesh cut them they feel pain and bleed like anyone else they have the ability to reason they re developing their own emotions a replicant of this time the opening crawl tells us is a being virtually identical to a human the film is directly interrogating the dominant ideology of its world which says that they re just mechanical tools that can be used or destroyed at will where killing them wasn t even called execution it was called retirement deckard is a vehicle for this these are the headline broader narrative and themes of the film simpson allows that br does portray deckard s growing disillusionment with his profession and the ideologies it is based on but never mentions that deckard as the story begins had left the blade runner business altogether and had no intention of ever coming back to it he s given up the violence simpson insists is integral to deckard s character he had to be directly threatened to get him to agree to one last go around and also unacknowledged by simpson that threat hangs over him through everything that happens after the empathy simpson says deckard develops only toward the end of the picture was apparently already there before its beginning the early cuts of the film straight up say and the later ones all essentially show that s why he stopped doing that sort of work as he tells rachel at one point in every version he gets the shakes i get em bad after he kills zora the first of the replicants he s been dispatched to destroy he s visibly disturbed 1 and immediately buying some booze to try to drink it away bryant the police captain who forced him to come back takes one look at him says christ deckard you look almost as bad as that skin job you left on the sidewalk deckard isn t some bigoted representative of government oppression who in his dealings with rachel is taking advantage of the dominant ideology for his own selfish benefit he s a person who has broken with that ideology
