set up i ve a few rolls of film awaiting my delayed attention and they are getting impatient photography even whilst loading film into the canon eos 300 ready for the august ffp roll of kentmere 200 my subconscious mind was quietly thinking about my digital set up now that the canon dslr kit has gone i have mentioned that i ve been exploring micro four thirds recently and that the panasonic lumix gx8 has become firmly entrenched as my edc of late with its interchangeable lenses it s proving even more versatile than the fuji x100t that s been my constant companion for over a decade putting sentiment aside it s time to rest the loyal fujifilm camera enjoy your retirement x100t all images panasonic lumix gx8 olympus m zuiko 30mm f3 5 macro lens thinking about what i need from a digital set up and bearing in mind i use it more in the summer months than at any other time it makes sense to stick with the mft system something i enjoy in the summer and well into the autumn too is close up and macro photography and my reading has shown that some of the olympus mft cameras are very well spec d for this genre with aids for focus bracketing and even in camera focus stacking too i recently picked up a pre owned olympus m zuiko 30mm f3 5 macro lens at an irresistible price and it arrived this morning this post is illustrated therefore with the first eight compositions from the lens paired with the gx8 this is a tiny lens weighs nothing and is reputed to be tack sharp my first try all handheld available light seems to bear this point out very nicely the maiden image based on these first few images i don t think i need to give the topic much more thought this lens is everything it s reputed to be and there s every reason to expect it to work just as well if not better on a native olympus body the trinity of olympus macro lenses 30 60 90 are all apparently stellar pieces of glass too not all the olympus bodies have the computational aids for bracketing something i would like to explore further following last years experiences with the canon so it will be a case of finding one that does and that also meets my budget i will be buying pre owned of course i ve already narrowed it down considerably now to look for a good buy and something else to sell if possible to help defray the costs i m not going to write any more on this subject just yet i want to make the initial purchase decision and having done so get to grips with the new kit before talking further on the subject i ve a long weekend away in manchester later this month which will give me a chance to further assess the changes to my everyday urban kit and reflect on retiring the x100t there are two rolls of 35mm film looking at me as i type and they need to be exposed and shared or discussed before any new cameras appear on the blog i have also a roll of 120 colour film in the ondu 6 6 that needs to be exposed this digital dalliance has taken far too much of my time lately until my next gx8 laowa 6mm not a typo whilst i was up at 6am this was indeed a wander at 6mm that is with a 6mm lens now of course i was using a micro four thirds system so that equates to 12mm in full frame terms although as someone who uses many different formats i no longer think in those terms however you classify it though this is a seriously wide lens and not a usual walk around everyday carry lens certainly not a typical urban lens in my eyes in the past i ve used extreme wide angle lenses for seascapes and landscapes but i have bought this lens with a view to using it in an urban environment i love the look produced by ultra wide angle lenses and if i am prepared to get close very close to subjects it will i m sure produce some interesting images the minimum focusing distance of this lens measured from the sensor to the subject is 9cm from the sensor apologies for wonky illustration with such a close focusing distance you need to be very aware of where the camera is in relation to the subject as it will cast a shadow over the subject unless you re careful not the usual keep my shadow out of frame consideration you will appreciate incidentally the front of the lens was less than two inches from the snail above and i ve cropped out the bottom 20 of the image so much though for the natural history diversion i was now approaching the centre of elland my usual time for wandering the centre is immediately after the school run just recently this has coincided with the best time to photograph the high street based on the position of the sun in the sky today at 7am it was a different story and i had to work harder for interesting compositions b w or colour i couldn t decide but loved the lens flare regardless the light was quite golden as i started along the high street a lack of clouds in the sky however meant that it was quite harsh in places and with such a wide field of view proper exposure across the whole frame was tricky on the whole the gx8 coped well although i was grateful for the convenient exposure compensation dial on the top of the camera easily accessible whilst looking through the viewfinder it was here that i decided to practice the get in close advice i gave myself earlier in practice it was almost impossible to get in too close quite often when i thought i was close enough i lifted the camera to my eye and realised i was nowhere near close enough after a quick stop to buy sausages for my breakfast not the first time i ve bought sausages on a photo walk i decided to walk home the slightly longer definitely less photogenic route and photograph road markings as you do or at least as i do i started with a shadow selfie and another i was now within sight of my front gate time for one more natural history image before breakfast i hope you spontaneous post which ends up far away from its starting point photography rant alert this is truly an end of an era moment in my photographic life or at least my digital photography last month i sold my only full frame digital slr the canon 6d mark ii and half a dozen canon ef lenses i kept the 16 35 l series lens to use with my canon film slrs however plus the plastic fantastic nifty fifty i rarely use the full frame digital kit and so i ve decided to part company with it and replace it with something lighter and more pocketable that i hope will see me out my aged back and shoulders will probably be happy too and my inner geek is getting a workout trying to decide what to replace it with the final image i made with the 6d2 and one from march 2025 the last proper outing the final image was made back in april this year and that was the first time i d used the camera since march 2025 it really wasn t earning its keep as they say it was a tough decision but in the end the right one another key part of my kit that i parted company with just this last week was the full spectrum converted fuji x t1 a camera that has been a constant for some years now and with which i ve made some lovely infrared images complete with sensor dust this time it wasn t my back that drove the decision but practicalities i m primarily using the lumix mft system for my digital photography at present and that looks set to continue quite possibly until my image making days are ended by effectively swapping the fuji x t1 for a full spectrum converted lumix g2 i remove the need to carry two different lens mounts i ve hung on to my fuji x lenses though as the fuji x t3 remains my camera of choice for digitising my film negatives down sizing both in terms of bulk and weight makes a lot of sense as i approach my 70s it s also a very practical consideration for urban photography where a big bag or pack might look out of place my choice of the intrepid system for my 8 10 film activities was partly down to cost but that decision too was also influenced by the weight of the large camera and its accoutrements as an aside i was shocked at how much my large backpack weighs empty the exploration of the micro four thirds mft system that i m currently undertaking may well be my last all system change at least in the digital realm canon nikon fuji lumix with minor dalliances along the way with pentax and others as part of my fund raising activity to move into 8 10 large format film photography i sold a lot of kit both digital and film reducing an obscene amount of gear down to a merely ridiculous amount i expect to continue the cull over the next two years as we consider moving and down sizing our house too one from the kmz ft2 a camera safe from the cull i was recently described by phil as non tribal something i took as a big compliment i believe that i am brand and format agnostic as i hope i ve shown through this blog over the dozen or so years i ve been posting as i move out of what could be described as my middle ages i feel this even more strongly it is the photographer that matters not the kit i ve left social media groups which i ve otherwise enjoyed simply to avoid the brand x vs brand y arguments proponents of each being bloody minded dogmatic and in all honestly downright rude at times i ve even cut contact with groups i used to meet in real life for the same reason good natured banter is great but rudeness and a refusal to discuss the merits or demerits of another way of doing something is totally unacceptable possibly another sign that my middle ages are passing but i m increasing intolerant of such behaviour i refuse to spend my elder years listening to such tripe puts soap box back under the chair as will probably be apparent by now i started this post without a clear plan and as i ve done so many times i ve ended up somewhere i hadn t foreseen when i first put digital to screen let me end on a positive note with some recent mft images that i ve enjoyed making so until the next time au revoir my soap box is safely under my chair ready for instant use should the need arise but hopefully my next long form post will have a tad more structure
