i remembered that guy was one of jaime s mentor figures in his original run and it came easy from there this story represents a multigenerational bond between heroes and the importance in ones own coming out to have an older mentor who can help you through struggles that they faced potentially without someone there with them telling them it was okay to feel those feelings jaime has a lot of fears and doubts about what it means to not fit in within the blue beetle identity as well as out of costume and that s where guy a trans man steps in as someone who has come to terms with himself and who he is as a man and as a hero its a story of identity and family the one you re given and the one you make and decide for yourself i really hope readers will like my take on both guy and jaime who both are so very queer to me and are equally important in their roles as new and long established heroes and people the line between having a heroic secret identity and having a queer identity is so thin i think the hazing of that separation in this story will help readers feel a deeper understanding and closeness to these characters like i do artlyloser i love these depictions of these characters i would have loved to have a mentor to talk to like guy there s always something so healing about seeing two generations of queer people get to share experiences getting to have those just mashing all my favorite characters together i didn t originally intend to do that when i started writing my script but i m glad it went in that direction what does this story mean to you to me it s funny and joyful it encompasses the feeling of being in queer spaces full of life but still feeling a deep grief it s a queer character study really funny and sad like all of our lives these days i for this comic was a desire to explore different kinds of pride the way we decided to go about this during this project was to showcase both queerness and disability though a story about redemption what does this story mean to you to us this story means honoring the legacies of the writers and artists who have shaped joe wilson harold allnut and dick grayson we wanted to pay tribute to their work by telling a new story with our own twist on things there are many underserved characters in dc and we hope we ve done right by a few of them in this comic what do you think readers will love wanted a story where harley had more choice in the matter but one where you still aren t sure if she made the right choice or what the future looks like for her what do you think readers will love about this story i think the gotham by gaslight setting is enjoyed by many but underutilized by dc we wanted to show it some love while also shoving as much story and metaphor as we could into every transposing these characters and their struggles into the repressive antiquated world of gotham by gaslight felt like such an interesting way to highlight them and the elements of the story that particularly by harley s struggle with having her identity tied so strongly to the joker exploring the importance of taking charge of one s self in the face of an unwelcoming world has been vital for life batman catwoman trail of the gun features a short scene where she applies that fluidity towards donning masculine disguise seeing her in that baseball cap and jacket lit a strong spark of inspiration and i ve been thinking about her relationship with gender and non conformity ever since what does this story mean to you to me the story is ultimately about visibility fluidity and sense of self selina tries to control how and when people see her in heists and gender and relationships and even with herself in the mirror it was important to me to try and capture her sense of gender in i ve been wrestling a lot with the concept of authenticity despite singularity what is the reward of being yourself around people who don t like who you are and not just about being queer which is a huge part of it and this story but even smaller things like the clothes you wear or the music you like or the way you speak when you lose or feel like you ve lost the one person who actually understands those things about you or you ve never had that at all it s hard to find the motivation to be yourself when you know you aren t going to be seen regardless so i wanted to deconstruct that because it s a very booster gold 2007 run theme which is when my comic takes place he s wrestling with the concept of everyone hating this person he has to pretend to be to protect the time stream and there s very little people he can be vulnerable or authentic with 2 what does this story mean to you to me this story is about finding the will to love yourself when nobody is watching it s a very specific feeling it feels amazing to have witnesses to your pain and to your joy but that s not always going to happen and you have to show up for yourself despite that sometimes you have to save yourself which is because you have and get to live with yourself everyday it s about not betraying yourself and who you are just because some people don t mesh with you 3 what do you think readers
