Text of the page (random words):
o accomplish something that advances our shared mission helping them accomplish it is part of our work too that expectation can be reinforced in all sorts of ways managers can be evaluated partly on how well they collaborate across departments employees who make other people s work possible can be recognized leaders can distinguish between legitimate capacity limitations and simple territorialism they can intervene when departments repeatedly protect themselves at the expense of the larger organization most importantly they can make clear that there is a fundamental difference between saying we genuinely don t have the capacity to help with this and saying that s not our problem those statements can produce the same immediate answer but they reflect entirely different organizational cultures who moves the chairs looking back so many of the things that frustrated me seem almost comically mundane who moves the chairs who sets up the microphone who helps residents get to a program who makes sure the sukkah gets built none of these questions belongs in an organization s strategic plan but organizational culture often reveals itself precisely through these small moments a mission statement can tell employees that they share a common purpose leadership can talk about teamwork an organization can declare collaboration to be one of its core values but the employee being asked to move twenty chairs learns far more about the organization s actual culture from what happens next does that employee think of course i ll help we re trying to make this program successful or why should i get stuck doing someone else s job if the first response is the norm you probably have an organization in which people understand that someone else s success can also be their success if the second response becomes rational you have something very different you have departments protecting their own resources pursuing their own priorities and negotiating with one another as though they were separate organizations eventually you don t really have one organization at all you have a collection of departments occupying the same building and that s why looking back i don t think my frustration was ever really about the chairs i could move the chairs the more important question was why the organization had created a culture in which helping me move them could make someone else feel like a schlemiel posted by drew kaplan no comments email this blogthis share to x share to facebook share to pinterest 07 september 2026 enjoying bexley brewfest again yesterday i enjoyed being once again back at the bexley brewfest where i got to have dozens of beers alongside wonderful weather in central ohio this was actually my fourth time attending in five years i didn t go last year as i had a wedding but i ve enjoyed going each of these last several years there s a lot to appreciate about the bexley brewfest from the beers and the people to the music and overall atmosphere but there are a few things in particular that keep bringing me back a rare sunday beer festival one thing that i really enjoy and am very fortunate and glad is available is that the bexley brewfest takes place on a sunday most beer festivals take place either on friday nights or saturdays when i can t attend so this is one of the rare sunday beer festivals i m actually able to experience what makes it even better is that not only is it on a sunday but there s also a national holiday the next day for recovery purposes it s also nice because it s not terribly far away from me in cincinnati being under a two hour drive plus i ve got family with whom i can spend the night i also get to see people i know from previous experiences and reconnect with them which is a really great opportunity as well great weather music and vibes the weather at the bexley brewfest can vary sometimes it rains and sometimes it s pretty hot but yesterday s weather while on the warm side was actually quite nice and really pleasant in addition to the beer the weather and the people they also have some nice music accompanying the experience it s always a great experience with wonderful vibes and of course some pretty decent beers my five favorite beers this year speaking of the beers while this year s experience of the beers was maybe not as good as i recall from years past there were certainly some standouts the following seven beers presented in alphabetical order were the top beers of my experience yesterday and are definitely worth checking out 2 tones brewing about a month hazy ipa campfire brewing grumbly bear esb derive brewing turtlenecks goldchains triple dry hopped hazy ipa forbidden root berried treasure strawberry shortcake sour ale nocterra brewing beta beta flash flash dipa olentangy river brewing belgian aloha belgian style triple with hibiscus seventh son brewing hazy nimbus hazy ipa you can also check out the complete list of breweries present at this year s bexley brewfest in the postscript to this post more than just a beer festival one of the really interesting things about the bexley brewfest is that it s not just a beer festival yes there are a bunch of breweries pouring their beers but it s also an incredible opportunity for families to come out and enjoy the afternoon they had a whole bunch of bouncy houses to entertain the kids and in addition to all of the food vendors there were a bunch of art vendors even if someone isn t particularly interested in checking out the beers there s still plenty to do whether bringing kids to enjoy the activities checking out the art vendor stalls grabbing some food or simply listening to the music a wonderful way to end the summer overall i think that for anybody in ohio especially those who cannot attend friday or saturday beer festivals and are looking for a sunday one the bexley brewfest is a wonderful experience being right in central ohio it brings together beer food art music families and professional space and i felt a strong pull to share some of those thoughts publicly after sitting with that feeling i realized that i already had a format that could hold this kind of reflection morning minute musings for those who may not know morning minute musings began in may 2020 when i had just started a new job and the world had suddenly shut down with in person gatherings meetings and networking all gone i started recording and publishing short daily videos as a way to share ideas insights and a sense of connection during a profoundly isolating time over the course of 2020 and 2021 that series became both a creative outlet and a professional lifeline i continued publishing them into 2022 and even a bit into 2023 but as the pandemic formally receded and my professional life shifted into a new more settled phase the original series gradually wound down in total i ended up creating more than 200 of these brief reflections while in that professional position lately though i ve found myself once again wanting a space to think out loud there are ideas questions and professional reflections i want to explore but they don t quite fit inside the frame of those earlier videos they re related in spirit but not in context and so rather than trying to squeeze something new into an old container i decided to start a new one this is why i ve launched morning minute musings volume 2 last week i released the first three videos in this new volume and i plan to continue publishing them across multiple platforms including youtube linkedin tiktok instagram and facebook while the format may look familiar short reflective and personal the focus is different these are grounded in where i am now not where i was in 2020 if you followed the original series i m grateful if you re discovering it for the first time welcome either way i hope this new chapter offers something thoughtful useful or at least a moment of pause in your day you can find the first three videos below 6th ajs conference ajs 2022 it was great connecting with fellow rabbis over beers sunday evening i was in the fortunate position to attend the 54th conference of the association for jewish studies ajs last week which was my 6th time attending this conference i am appreciative to the my work for both allowing me to attend as well as to pay for this professional development opportunity as this conference always is for me it was reinvigorating inspiring intellectually stimulating and an opportunity to learn new vocabulary highlights for me in addition to re connecting with people as well as meeting new people highlights of the papers i heard were the following rabbi dr shlomo zuckier delivering his paper the rabbis took the term גבר as a man in the bible and made it a rooster in mishnaic hebrew roni shweka part of his fascinating paper torah scholars who are similar to women but act mightily like men once again on construction of rabbinic masculinity chaya halberstam mentioned in a response to a question that even though it seems rabbinic literature studies are a bit behind involving new methodologies they are also way ahead of most other fields of studies of late antiquity cough josephus studies cough w hile tannaim and early amoraim discuss הלכה למעשה or not later amoraim understand הלכה as always actionable said shlomo zuckier as part of his summary of his halakhah ma aseh precedent and analogy a talmudic reading paper this to some degree follows up from his 2016 ajs paper yael landman suggested considering halakhicization as a term rather than halakhah as a fixed notion yonatan brafman pointed out is that halakhists are not often considered by those who consider modern jewish philosophy even though they engage in it their language is not composed in the way of philosophy even if they are doing it he also pointed out that a lot of folks who discuss halakhah as the law in the 19th and 20th centuries often use it in a negative and backward sense shulamit shinnar observed that illness is a form of temporary handicapping and it can adversely affect the way one views future possibilities of their life aaron adler pointed out that rambam wrote mishneh torah from ages 23 30 and he went through religious changes which is reflected in changing his mind up until its publishing in 1138 thus not contradictions he changed his mind as part of his early mishneh torah editions and rabad s glosses paper sophia schmitt delivering her paper a few other papers i wanted to note as being quite interesting to me a new theory for the origin and function of the kaddish by reuven kimelman we didn t start the fire preventing fire disaster in jewish and christians neighborhoods of medieval ashkenaz by sophia schmitt code switching refining our understanding of greek and latin in rabbinic literature by daniel golde one other paper i missed but heard a few people singing its praises was bringing the bible to babylonia the bavli s infusion of the mesopotamian landscape with biblical narratives by omer shadmi meeting up with rabbi charlie schwartz at lehrhaus not seeking completionism one of the typical practices i engage in at previous ajs conferences has been to seek to attend every single panel session offered which includes the final session although i know a lot of people have already departed or they have flights to catch while i attended every single session on the first day of the conference for the final day of the conference i could only attend one of the two as i had a plane to catch for the second one if i were to have attended that final session i would not have gotten home until late as far as the middle day i skipped out on the first one to go visit lehrhaus to check out the space as well as to record an episode of the jewish drinking show which will be very exciting when it publishes next month and there was an afternoon session on monday that none of the panels seemed particularly interesting to me so i decided to use that time to visit the book floor as well as to chat with various folks which ended up being quite a good opportunity to use at that time enjoying kosher wine at the welcome reception on the lookout for drinking content as there were a couple of papers delivered at last year s ajs concerning drinking content especially within rabbinic texts one of whom i was able to feature on as a guest for the jewish drinking show the other one declined as she was not used to podcasting i was curious and open to see what would be shared while there had been a drinking text mentioned in the course of one of the papers i heard actually there was one paper that had nothing in the title to do with drinking yet it was chock full of talmudic drinking texts all of which were entirely new to me if they came from the palestinian talmud in prof shulamit shinnar s the animalization of illness in rabbinic literature models of illness and rabbinic subjectivity she discussed a whole bunch of incidences of people drinking wine and what would happen in their exposure to potential venomization see here for the front side of her source sheet and see here for the back side of her source sheet this was particularly fascinating to me and i look forward to see if that ever gets published or what she wants to do with that material but that was particularly exciting as i was not expecting a drinking paper there but it was all about talmudic drinking texts souvenir from the schnitzer book awards dinner meals a wonderf...
