posts for the year eight this doesn t seem as bad as i had thought it might be for i am often disinclined to reveal my thoughts in what has been a year of difficult news it is as if i feel the need to avoid controversy i am so conscious of the danger of expressing opinions that attract the wrong kind of attention very strange for someone who was once a warrior for and in all sorts of causes let s face it this could be the result of maturity and growing wisdom or worse it might be sheer funk commentators differ in their views about the state of the world some seek to reassure that things are actually getting better there are supposedly fewer wars less terrorism and not as many people are affected by violence or natural disasters i am cautious about this though inclined to optimism the direct alternative to being positive is to go down a black hole of apocalyptic whirlwinding perhaps i have been reading too much about politics geo politics and how we can make ourselves and the world do better in 2018 even our not so esteemed prime minister is spouting hopes for a more just and fair society though she doesn t seem to have a clue about her own party s role in making things worse for many hundreds of thousands of people so i will give up the wider view and think of all the people who are with me today family members and friends who have passed on are very much a part of hogmanay my granny is always with me sitting on my shoulder reminding me to take up broom and duster swishing away the dirt of this soon to be redundant year for me it is a comfort to be able to pray that my special people of the past are resting in peace and to have the hope that in years to come others will pray such rest for me then there are all my loved ones far and near those in other parts of the world in scotland firth of this land and struggling to make this world a fairer place when i raise my glass of orangeade as the bells toll i will be thinking of you all for some of my special people there are parties for others this is a hard time because of loved ones who are no longer here for others they have their people or the hope of them in years to come i fell into a trap with a younger person a few days ago speaking of the hope that i would live to see such and such an event i was reminded that we cannot be so bold as to assume the possibility of bargaining for a specific number of years more the only way to combat this is to make the most of each and every day now seeking the support of others in love and friendship in joy and through sorrow sorry if this is sounding like a sermon again i guess you can t take the sermon out of the little old lady any more than you can take the passion to save the world out of the middle aged warrior i close with a photo of the is the view from the back of the house showing a totally different aspect from a month ago as the trees that were there have now been harvested they were around fifty to sixty feet high and formed a dense spruce forest apologies for the mist and cloud i had been waiting patiently for a fine day and then gave up in disgust you can probably tell that on this day the weather is chilly and unpleasant as well i can imagine that in sunshine the aspect would be much more cheerful it is a pleasant change having an actual view but i am concerned for the pine martens the deer the red squirrels and the siskins there being no cover close to the garden they will probably migrate up the hill when we moved to this house some 12 plus years ago the trees seemed quite tall and increasingly as time passed they blocked out more and more sun my hope now is that we will get the benefit of the winter sunshine if it ever comes over the last few days i have found myself in sermonising mode maybe because my new edition of the cofs magazine is here i ve read it from cover to cover and find myself as sad as the weather is dismal yes there are some positive stories and yes there are some interesting reviews of books and films but overall it seems that the church is stuck in another century many of the people in the photographs are of the more mature variety and it is easy to find oneself wondering where all the young people are in a way that is to fall into the trap of age phobia or ageism and we don t need much encouragement to do that that then feeds into a strand in politics of that blames all the country s financial problems on the old people it would be too easy to fall into the trap which i believe we are set by many political leaders that is to say it is wrong to set the different generations against one another i suppose i was born slightly too early to be a baby boomer and not long enough ago to be a curmudgeonly old duffer that s my claim anyway but bear with me i do have a valid thought to offer we are force fed statistics which show that when waiting times in hospitals are increasing it is because there are too many old people nhs finances are under strain because there are increasing numbers of elderly and frail people and the older generation had it easy compared to young people today now i happen to believe that young families are having a particularly hard time too many jobs are low paid have uncertain hours and do not constitute a living wage people are scared to be off sick and end up working until they are broken or breaking and too many rights are with the employers because that is what the ballot box has decided but there is a truth in the cost of health care being a specific problem which impacts upon the whole of social care modern medicine is the victim of its own success there are so many medications that can help to prolong life even though only for a few months but spending money on these drugs is the only way that knowledge can be progressed so the answer comes back to money it often does i had better stop this is all a bit serious for a bleak wednesday afternoon do you have any experience of ageism or any ism for that matter post we can learn a lot from our companion pets not least how to make the most of each day that is something i have been finding more and more difficult in days gone by when i wanted to find that safe and happy place where the veil between earth and the ethereal is hardly tangible i used to think of all sorts of areas of the countryside always with a view and often somewhere that makes it easy to feel thankful for the simple joy of being alive nowadays it is somewhat different an essential element of what the theologians and philosophers would call a thin place for me has to be sunshine in one sense it is simple i put myself in the garden in late spring on a sunny warm day note that the weather is an essential part of the special place i feel the warmth of the sun i hear the birds singing and building and being busy and my very bones feel warm and pliant sunshine is the key here even though i have to be covered up like an edwardian lady of old in other words i am complaining about the lack of sun this past year looking at the date i can hardly believe we are well into autumn a friend at our dance group has been taking photos of special moments and i really do think he has captured one here i love the photo though to be honest it is hard seeing myself again in the guise of a little old lady hbtw is delighted to be as dapper as he thinks he is but not so pleased at the growing lack of hair thank you r you have given me the confidence to start writing again you will be aware that i have found this past year very hard the austerity agenda of the westminster uk government is still biting hard and it has taken me months to work through to a place where i realise that to pray for people affected exerts a cost on those who pray to feel the whole gambit of emotions for those in the midst of changes to benefits and the prospect of cuts in services is the way to get close to their pain but it is not always possible to offer practical help where it is given there is god at least that is what i have been painfully learning i have learnt something else again from a wise friend and perhaps a with a tip of the bobble hat to have i got news for you the only way to chase away the fear and anger and helplessness that rises in the throat as we watch the rich and powerful continue to perpetrate injustice is to take hold of the politicians figuratively of course and laugh them off their perches it seems unbelievable but this applies to the snide remarks the lies the false news and the worries over the terrible news we see paraded into our sitting rooms i hear you m i know we can switch off the tv or the radio society has never been equal but in the general scheme of things we can see the injustices we can make the connections between corporate profit and child poverty we can find out about land grabs and we are aware of politicians who are in it for their own ends whether it be opportunistic bullying or kick backs bit by bit we can make a difference i want to go on and do an i have a dream speech it comes out of my background and it feels like it is part of my inner being but this is not a sermon these are strange times give or take a few hundred years if our planet has that long and history may not judge us very well all we can do is to strive the best we can to make a difference and we can laugh at the leaders who piffle and faffle and plot and scheme 2017 by freda here is the promised photo of the elderly puppy at heart misty actually i shouldn t confuse her with having to stay young she is as she is and so it should be for humans for instance i used to think of anyone as 75 and qualifying for a free tv licence as definitely in the old category however now that i am nearer 75 than 70 i am no longer sure what counts as old health warning to my readers this blogger is definitely feeling less sprightly than she was and that despite the exercising extras that some readers have guessed at i blame politics and the inequalities inherent in our society so do i have a good old rant and expose my lack of knowledge or do i try to be more like polyanna and concentrate on the good in each day i know it should be the latter after all counting one s blessings puts the right kind of positive vibes into the ether update monday 21 august 2017 the above was written in the middle of may and misty s hair has grown to the stage where she is needing her autumn trim as i explained to someone who commented and jogged my conscience this has been a difficult summer with circumstances that mean i am unable to share things fully i have recently looked at some blogs and been sad to find that someone has died and a couple of faithful and creative bloggers have suffered bereavement my own difficulties are of a different order and though complex the main problem is that i find myself swamped with anxieties about an ongoing situation that i seem unable to shrink down to size so much so that i am in danger of swamping close friends and loved ones by trying to offload too freely i find myself wondering if i could use this blog as a kind of therapy but then i realise that the need for discretion is more important and anyway who wants to read about misery on a lighter note i have enjoyed visits from friends and family and am trying to come to grips with a new phone which incorporates the ability to take selfies what a lot there is to learn about this new way of viewing one s self by the way i have checked the grammar of one s self and have discovered i am archaic so be it as one of my blogging friends would say get over it except that said blogger would have said it in bold just look at these bright young things not me i m easy to spot and am obviously concentrating hard on how to do something that most people do almost as second nature still i know that learning new things is good therapy hence this summer s mooc on compassion and care in health and social care well i have tried to make some small attrition for ignoring this space over the summer in the grand scheme of things my life is so small compared to all the tragedies that have happened and are unfolding i am grateful for these golden years truly and with surprise at where life finds me no promises then either about trying to write more or looking for a theme or whatever dalamory s story is part mine and part of the big wide world where it goes we shall see
