t on a plane smaller than my car i was hoping we d take off quickly so i could go to sleep however there was a really annoying couple who were seated apart and kept getting up to give things to each other the flight attendant was getting really testy because we could not leave the gate until everyone was seated when she finally lost her patience she came on the intercom and said if you do not sit down i will turn this plane around it was awesome and the people finally sat down and didn t get up again as allyson and i drove through the middle of nowhere on our way to a vineyard i was telling her a story and i was distracted by the sight on the side of the road in the middle of a sentence about something completely different i looked up and said oh look a yard full of chickens allyson found my surprise very amusing the kentucky wildcats mascot changes clothes more times during a game than cher does at a concert in las vegas while we thoroughly enjoyed our day at the races we lost almost every bet we made in quite spectacular fashion i m not even kidding our horses were dead last every time as we were boarding the shuttle to go back to our car at the race track we ended up standing in line with a bunch of really loud rowdy women allyson in a wide brim hat sunglasses and pearls turned to me and said i hate the public it was a pure diva moment and i loved it it was also very true if you make a comment about horses having add as a jockey is passing you that jockey will hate you with the fire of a thousand suns and when he loses the race he will stare you down and let you know it ask hutch she will tell you all about it bourbon is nasty it burns all the way down and long after it s actually been swallowed don t drink it we went to churchill downs but didn t have time to take the tour before we had to head for the airport so we asked nicely and the guy selling the tour tickets told us where there was an open door that we could sneak through to take a look around we managed to go out to the stands and take some photos and we were sneaking back out when someone asked us if we needed any help we thought we were busted you know since we weren t supposed to be there but no not even instead of throwing us out he offered to give us a private tour sadly we didn t have time but i thought it was so nice people in kentucky are really awesome ally s friend suggested we hang out at the elk s lodge one night and when ally agreed i thought she was nuts i was seriously dreading it however i turned out to be completely wrong and it ended up being really fun we met a ton of nice people and we paid a total of 5 for drinks for four of us i learned that the phrase that s what she said can be used in almost any conversation and no matter how many times you say it in one weekend it never gets old and it s never not funny i know there are so many things that i m forgetting we packed so much stuff into four and a half days and it was so much fun thank you wednesday 5 comments top five tuesday november 1 2011 by sam i was pretty excited about top five tuesday when i first had the idea but that was like two months ago and i ve only done one other top five tuesday post like i said yesterday i ve been a major slacker lately well as of today it s back as promised i m going to tell you about my trip to kentucky the land of horses and bourbon actually i m going to start telling you about my trip there was so much awesome crammed into the weekend that it would be impossible to fit it all into one post so today i give you the top five favorite things that happened in kentucky i got to meet hutch easily the most awesome part if you ve been coming here for a while you are familiar with the shana ally love fest well hutch was a fantastic addition to our duo and we made a wonderful threesome the horse racing i ve been going to horse races with my grandfather since i was a little girl but i never really appreciated it however taking a trip to keeneland gave me a whole new appreciation for the sport the fact that we had clubhouse tickets and were able to stand right up at the rail to see the horses and feel the thunder was amazing oh and it didn t hurt that hutch made a mortal enemy of one of the jockeys i drank moonshine this was a big deal for me you see i grew up watching the dukes of hazzard and i was always intrigued by the moonshine being from ny we didn t really have much access to moonshine especially not living in the city stills are kind of hard to keep on a fire escape so when ally said she d procured some moonshine for us to try i was excited i would love to tell you that i drank it straight from the jar in big gulps but that would be a lie i could barely smell straight from the jar no we mixed a tiny amount with a lot of coke and it was yummy it also made my face and ears feel like they were going to burn right off we spent the afternoon drinking wine at a vineyard we sat at a picnic table and shared a bottle of wine and talked about a million things i was such a nice relaxing afternoon definitely one of my favorite days of the trip i was asked to show my id while buying champagne at liquor barn i ve been feeling really old lately i also wasn t able to get my hair colored before my trip and all my grays were showing which made it even worse but i felt instantly younger when the guy at liquor barn insisted on seeing my id i happily showed it to him and it put me into a great mood for the rest of the day those were some of the highlights come back tomorrow to see the pictures some of continues but with a new addition top five tuesday 5 comments what the hell october 31 2011 by sam i like when things happen in the correct order take holidays when stores have christmas decorations up before halloween it makes me absolutely bonkers or when the seasons don t cooperate and we skip right over spring and jump into summer or when an appetizer is served at the same time as a main course i m far too much of a control freak to just roll with that kind of thing so when stuff happens out of order i go a little nuts well this weekend mother nature decided to screw with those of us here in the northeast and she thought it would be funny to dump a bunch of snow on us before halloween that is not supposed to happen in fact the last time it did happen was 1952 and that was only about half an inch i don t know what our final total was on sunday but there was a lot of snow in ct and it was so heavy and wet that we had a ton of downed branches one of our trees even split in half this branch was right in front of the deck and the crash it made when it fell scared the hell out of me this is the tree that cracked into pieces j s sister s baby shower was saturday and since i don t let a little snow stand in the way of a good party i traveled to staten island for it a trip that should have taken me no more than an hour actually took two on the way there and two and a half on the way home driving down the merrit parkway with all the downed trees was like trying to make it through an obstacle course i swear i ve never been so tense in my life luckily all turned out well and the shower was really nice and the drive fulfilled my need for adventure for quite some time also we never lost our power which was great because no power means no heat and no water and it was 32 degrees outside unfortunately the rest of my family was not so lucky my brother and marisa lost power even though half of their building was ok their half had no power so they are staying with marisa s grandparents and my parents have been told that they might not get their power back on for a week so they are staying at my cousin s with my grandfather and their dog it s not ideal and my mom and cousin are sleeping on the couches but at least they have heat now for some other news so you may have noticed that i ve been a blogging slacker for a while for my disappearance last week i m using the excuse that i was in kentucky for a weekend of wine fun with ally and hutch but it hasn t just been the past week i ve been slacking in general lately and i don t know the last time i got in a full week of posts life and more specifically work has been really busy lately and i ve been mentally drained by the time i get home at night it s really hard to be interesting and or funny when you can barely form coherent sentences usually the extent of my effort involves feeding myself and j and summoning up enough attention to watch a sitcom well that is unacceptable my blog is important to me and i hate that it s been suffering so in an effort to recommit and get back into the habit of posting regularly i ve decided to participate in nablopomo or national blog posting month what is that well basically it s a group of people who all commit to posting on their blog daily it happens every month but november is sort of a big deal and there are prizes and link ups and all kinds of good things kallay is the one who inspired me to do this because she s got two babies running around at home and if she can find the time to do it so can i so starting tomorrow i will be putting up a post every single day for the entire month of november this is going to take a lot of planning on my part but i think it s doable i ve also decided to make some changes around here that you ll start seeing in the next few weeks it s like a whole new blogging world over here i m so excited i promise that my first few posts will be about my trip to kentucky it was a fantastic weekend and i can t wait to last year when i was in savannah with ally we made a plan to get together this october in kentucky so we could go to the races at keeneland and wear hats at the time a year seemed like forever and i thought october would never get here actually that year has flown by and as you read this i m on a plane to kentucky ally has big plans for us horse racing university of kentucky football a tour of the woodford reserve distillery and the best part of the trip is that we aren t going to be alone the always awesome hutch is going to be joining us as well i m so excited i can hardly wait of course as i wrote this post last night at 10pm i still hadn t packed yet but that s a minor detail i had to make sure i got some random musings in before i left so here you go on mornings that i take the train i pass a shoe shine booth on my way out of the station i m always jealous of the men sitting in the big comfy leather chairs relaxing with their coffee and their newspapers while they get their shoes shined every time i pass i think that i should really get my shoes shined too except i wear crocs to commute i don t think getting them shined would really work out one of these mornings i have to remember to wear leather shoes so i can try it out the other morning i was curling my hair just after my shower and before i got dressed my hand slipped and i dropped the curling iron luckily i was able to jump out of the way pretty quickly and only ended up with a small burn on my shoulder it hurt a little but i was relieved had my reflexes been a little slower or had the curling iron fallen a few inches down and to the left i would have had a whole different kind of pain to deal with i had dinner earlier at red lobster and the people at the next table were having a birthday and then the people at the table behind them and then the people at the table behind those people by the time we were done with dinner we d heard the birthday song eight times i started to wonder if going to red lobster for your birthday was a thing because i don t think i ve ever been in a restaurant on a weeknight especially and seen so many people celebrating birthdays it made me kind of wish it was my birthday too it s a bit of a short list this week because if i don t get my butt upstairs to start packing i m not going to have anything to wear on my vacation have a great weekend and i ll see you me not to get dressed before i do my hair 3 comments can someone please explain october 19 2011 by sam this morning i d like to discuss one of life s mysteries why does rainy weather always mean there will be traffic on the roads i m not talking about horrible downpours causing flooding and road closures i m not talking about people skidding from the rain and getting into accidents when those things happen traffic is completely understandable what i m talking about is that the mere fact that it is raining seems to be cause for traffic my normally 45 minute long bus ride this morning took 1 1 2 hours and the only issue along the way is that it was raining not even raining really drizzling it s almost as if people who are normally decent drivers see the rain and completely forget what they are supposed to do and slow their car down to a crawl i understand that you should drive more slowly and cautiously in the rain but we were literally going 10 miles per hour down the highway that seems like overkill in the caution department to me someone must have done a study on this at some point what causes this anyone have any ideas and these are the things that keep me up at night posted
