way i currently do most of my lighting is based on one super basic principle the 3 point setup one main key light direction this should be the primary light positioned in such a way that it lights 1 3 or 2 3 of the face never splitting it directly in half one bounce fill light this is a fill for shadows usually a complementary color to the primary one rim back light strongest and sharpest behind and to the side of the character for a strong rim to highlight any flyaways and contours i want to exaggerate great for building a strong silhouette side note on this one i usually add a slight gaussian blur and chromatic aberration to it to have a more glowy effect i then experiment with placement and strength of each light depending on the effect i want i also look for references of the vibe im trying to match here are some visual examples of the 3 point setup because my background is in cg vfx most of my lighting studies are based on my knowledge of that however there is this amazing resource i d recommend to anyone wanting to learn more about lighting and cinematography the chris brejon book on cg cinematography online for free here while a lot of is cg specific the lighting theory portions and seeing how it s done informed a lot about my love and knowledge of light and how it works i hope this helps i don t do this always but it is my default especially for
