what s for dinner what s for dinner the everyday question that gets no answer sunday february 2 2014 eric and sara open house we had an open house here in san jose to celebrate eric and sara s dec 28th marriage there was a beautiful reception for them in gilbert az we wanted to give our san jose friends a chance to meet sara so we opted for an open house on jan 25th i went round and round trying to decide what kind of an event to plan all and all i think it turned out very nice however we took no pictures that s right no pictures what was i thinking not to document the night with photos it really was a very lovely scene friends have commented how nice everything looked and how tasty the treats were greg thought to take some pictures after we d already taken most of the decorations down so here are some after the party putting things back together pictures our friends the zamoras let us borrow lots of the pretty things we used votive holders and candles and tea lights their daughter amorette was married last summer and lisa who had come to help me string twinkle lights the week before the reception brought with her several boxes of things she thought we might like to use wow what a godsend just seeing the pretty jars helped me figure out what we would do rolando helped assemble a patio heater and offered other help now try to imagine 50 more candles tea lights votives placed in pretty jars and lanterns around the yard hanging sitting on tables etc imagine the regular patio furniture moved to the back side of the yard on the grass with the side tables topped with house shaped lanterns with candles glowing inside on the patio imagine 4 round tables with white table clothes and blue runners placed across the middle in the center of the tables were candles a votive wrapped in white and silver sparkly ribbon inside a small round vase and three glass votive holders all different kinds each with a tea light inside surrounded the one small vase simple but very pretty the food table was beautiful all prepared by julie baker cancilla and her crew everything was displayed in such a lovely way and everything was finger food ish we had no silverware only plates and tooth picks our food choices were cinnamon twists individual monkey bread served in pretty paper liners lemon bars in paper liners cream puffs with powdered sugar dusted on top or chocolate on top cubed cheeses a huge lovely silver plater bowl filled with cut up fruit pineapple grapes strawberries oranges and lovely tiny little round shortbread cookies delicious notice the blue and white runners hanging off the serving table similar runners were on the round tables sara s mother made them for the az reception and sent them our way so we could use them too outside on the patio we had the drink table offering water hot cider and hot chocolate with chocolate sprinkles and marshmallows and whip cream to be added if you liked and spoons dipped in chocolate to use for stirring yah we put the furniture in the garage to make room for people and 3 round tables imagine the smaller wood circle moved to another wall and the picture underneath it s eric and sara pre wedding picture placed on top of decorative luggage the wood circle was on that big bare wall with 4 engagement pictures of eric and sara placed next to it in a very pleasing balanced arrangement thank you nancy the tv played a dvd picture montage of eric and sara growing up dating pre wedding video the dvd was made by sara s sister and it is very well done and yes there were some flowers imagine these arrangements on 3 round tables in the family room the vases were arranged the same way as the vases outside but instead of candles they held flowers one hydrangea in the small round vase and the glass votive holders held freesias paper whites and roses instead of tea lights again thank you nancy the other arrangements were simple as well either tightly grouped roses at the guest book and piano or mixed bouquets in just a couple random places most of the front room furniture was put in the garage so the receiving line had space to stand and greet our guests who came in through the front door some of our clean up crew a guest of honor eric a guest from a far off place jan and a guest great home teacher marty judd who returned to help set the house back up it took less than 45 minutes this is the morning after so imagine it dark the arbor lit with twinkle lights that draped to 4 corners and wrapped around the main legs and the paper lanterns were filled with two strands of white lights in the background there you can see more paper lanterns each lantern had a timer battery votive the votives were in plastic snack bags one each and we me and claudia hung the bag in the lantern by poking it onto the hooks that are on the lantern wire frame they worked great well some of the votives did not come back on when they were supposed to but by the end of the night they were all on to look at it in the first picture you ll understand why many of us said it looked like the tree of life so that s that it s all over everything is down and put away the lanterns are onto their next adventure already the adult stake dance special thanks to eric and sara for getting married tom and kathy curtis sara s parents for coming from az to the open house and helping us with set up and take down tom and jozie curtis sara s brother and sister in law who live in concord and came for the open house and helped us with set up and take down ryan don nancy scott jan gregg claudia mark marty and heather judd lisa and rolando zamora all of them helped in either setting up or taking down or both and many more things you know what they say about many hands i d like to add and smiling comments tuesday october 15 2013 twice 25 half 100 i m 50 to celebrate my birthday greg and i went down to newport beach and spent a few days the high light was a day on catalina island on friday we headed to newport beach first off we sat down to eat at ruby s diner and then stopped in at roger s nursery we have been there before and i was sure they d be decked out for fall holidays and they were and christmas too i didn t take pictures though except for a couple things this is a fingered citron a type of citrus i don t remember ever seeing one before or knowing about them it reminds me of the octopus face guy from pirates roger s has a very fun halloween gallery selling all kinds of ghoulish things these two pictures are the same picture you know the kind that changes as you walk by this one was the least icky on saturday we went to catalina we caught a ferry in long beach at 10 00am it took an hour to get to catalina the weather was perfect all day was a really nice fun day don t know that man i was interested in the light house but he was very serious about keeping his hat on he wore a clip on strap to hold the hat tight to his head hamilton beach to the right avalon to the left and the casino which isn t for gambling it is a gathering place casino means gathering place in italian the highlight of the trip driving a golf cart up and around avalon wrigley memorial botanic garden the wrigley family bought catalina island in the early 1900s this garden was established by mrs wrigley and the memorial is for william wrigley jr taking a minute to learn a little about the flora and fauna in the area at least it looks like that but what else is going on can you tell greg was on the hunt for sockets all afternoon long late lunch at descanso beach club at the end of the road just beyond the casino ice cream shops all over i had an olaf at big olaf s the front of the casino sunsetting we watched fishing off the pier time to go back 7 30pm back to long beach sunday we went to church in huntington beach in the evening we went out to corona del mar walked the side walk above the beach and watched the last bit of light disappear from the sky monday my birthday we checked out of our room and headed to a garden surprise surprise i noticed it as we were driving around on sunday so i looked it up and lucky us it was free on monday just a small place a block on a corner in corona del mar sherman library and gardens this pond is in a green house lots of orchids the yellow koi looks near 3 feet long big the garden is used for teas and receptions and there s a little cafe there is a large succulent garden many of the scapes look like underwater scenes i ve always felt that succulents look a lot like what lives in the ocean this particular planting obviously isn t so reminiscent of a natural sea scape but i liked the pattern and textures all in all it was a great weekend some useful info maybe newport area is the land of no wrinkles maybe not the best place for someone turning 50 catalina likes to treat on birthdays we didn t get the benefit of the treats because saturday when we were on the island was not my birthday catalina express a ferry line offers free fair if it is your birthday we knew this but didn t want to go on monday since we were flying out on monday evening but many other places on the island also treat on a birthday we did get some free golf cart time the gal gave it to us even though it was early ice cream places will treat you a scoop you can play a free game of miniature golf all kinds of things people wear a ribbon the ferry gives them and then everyone knows kind of fun posted by kathy at 8 06 pm 2 comments saturday october 5 2013 the clouds lifted we ended up getting some pretty scenery after all we visited with sister in law of a friend of ours in san jose she and her family own several motels in town and she serves on various councils she s 80 years old and a very sharp business woman she gave us tickets to the national museum of wildlife art outside the national museum of wildlife art as far as we could get on the road to jenny lake park in the center of jackson hole on each corner is an arch made of elk antlers the antlers came from the elk refuge the elk shed their antlers every year these arches have been around for years but the boy scouts in the area every year collect the antlers and sell them for fundraising this is a memorial to veterans from jackson on our way over the mountains out of jackson hole the sunset was one of those sky on fire type scenes posted by kathy at 1 37 pm no
