w o reefer fleet patience has not gone unrewarded as i recently purchased ten micro trains 47330 great northern 40 wood sheathed reefers for 150 delivered at 15 a throw they are within 25 of the estimated build cost with none of the work a bargain perhaps even a screaming deal see buy wait staged on the npp i had thought the ice hatches to be molded and was surprised to discover that they can simulate ventilator service if i can t find replacements i could try printing some or just sticking a block of wood in there to simulate a hatch out of service update there are hatches and latches available as micro trains line 499 10 915 and includes 24 hatches and 48 latches enough for six cars i ordered the two they had in stock about 30 delivered the shipping was more than each individual kit nice to know they can be had this may be the longest train assembled on the npp the usual train length is 4 5 cars with 6 being a long train train length is determined by the available space for operation that is 17 reefers which is about a quarter of the putative number needed to serve my vision of the rusty dusty i have another reefer coming lettered for an obscure east coast line representative of the odd car you will see far from home rails time to get cracking on the cqd so i can start the w o stop look listen recently in the area i know this crossing and the trains move slowly on this stretch of track you can see that there is room to pull clear of the track without entering the intersection also the crossing is signaled getting hit by a train here takes work you can see from the cars that the train went several hundred feet after what one imagines is an emergency stop i have witnessed a train stop for a car on the tracks along this line which was heads up on the some 2 1 2 years ago i was able to purchase some rolling stock for the w o 32 months of ebay alerts yielded plenty of great northern refrigerator cars but nothing for the 1940 s so rare are they i had noted that the most difficult part of a w o project was the need at least in my case of 60 70 period correct refrigerator cars while i have procured the locomotives and cabooses the great yellow fleet is not just the entire reason for the railroad but the most difficult to obtain but there is hope the bot alerted me to four appropriate cars at not unreasonable prices who knows the going rate for hen s teeth ordered paid delivered equipment was staged on the northern pacific project npp the great yellow squadron the car on the right has hatch pins which i ll have to look into great northern preferred to run it s hood units long end forward the first car is a previous purchase and period correct although by the late 1940 s it would be near end of life a few more reefers and i ll have to build at least a town on the w o posted in rolling stock tagged rolling stock 5 replies more shortlines posted on january 27 2023 by bkivey reply i saw a passing mention of the black hills ft pierre railroad and one thing led to another and i bought what is apparently the entire available literature on the the railroad chartered in 1881 as the first railroad in the south dakota black hills the bh fp was the comstock mine s company railroad until 1901 when the mine found that mining was more profitable than railroading and through a series of shell companies turned operation over to the cb q the only real changes to the fp bh was a renumbering of locomotives and an attempt to operate the railroad more as a common carrier than a captive company operation railroads of the black hills is considered to be the definitive work on the early railroads in the area and is pretty much the only reference work whistle stops on the black hills ft pierre is more of an anecdotal history and looks like something someone ran off on a decent printer the cover illustration is rather alarming as the train is speeding down a funicular grade slope the engine has lost it s side rods and the crew appears to have jumped for their lives comstock mine the comstock mine in lead leed south dakota was one of the world s largest producers of gold and silver and the railroad was how material got to the mine the company produced a film in 1940 giving a good overview of mining operations but by the time of the film the railroad was long gone the primary purpose of the railroad was to bring timbers from the company s logging operations to the mine the book states that there were four scheduled timber trains daily and from the film you can see why there were entire forests worth of timbers in the mine complex to the point some places seem more wood than rock the film is of interest to model railroaders in that you can see how the mine operates and how the railroad fits in most modelers will model the minehead and stamp mill where ore is initially crushed into rocks 2 inches across and have trains haul the ore out in places with limited real estate this is plausible most operations preferred to do the entire extraction process in house and the only thing that came out of comstock was bullion and that apparently transported by guarded wagon the 3 5 miles to deadwood connecting with the chicago northwestern and the rest of the world this is reflected in the bh fp s roster which was heavily weighted toward wood flat cars every train picture i ve seen of the railroad is nearly or entirely log flats a few coal cars and some passenger equipment but log flats gold mining does require large quantities of mercury and cyanide but the extraction was closed cycle so only minimum losses would be expected mercury was shipped in iron containers as that metal does not form an amalgam with the element and cyanide would likely be shipped in the crystalline form of potassium cyanide or sodium cyanide both could come in by boxcar modeling the fp bh the railroad was 3 narrow gauge and ran through some impressive scenery after the cb q took control the mainline was converted to dual gauge from the cb q interchange to lead and the slim gauge locos were equipped to handle narrow and standard gauge equipment operation was more than moving timber though there was interchange traffic with the parent railroad and rail excursions to recreation areas were a regular occurrence so some passenger traffic there doesn t appear to have been regularly scheduled passenger service as accounts describe 8 hour trips to cover 30 miles probably a combine on the end of a freight train some might try this in n scale but that would not be me i would think ho at the least the railroad is as well documented as you could reasonably ask and better than might be expected certainly enough material to create a plausible rendition were i doing a version i d model the town of lead the dual gauge mainline to the cb q interchange the elk canyon area and perhaps an interchange with one of the other short lines the logging operations would be represented as staging a clever person might arrange the track plan to include a loads empties situation at lead and the logging staging probably 1902 as the engine facilities in lead had just been completed and the dual gauge was laid i don t know that i m enough of an ho person to attempt this project but it would make an interesting diversion from colorado narrow gauge and not everyone would have your equipment posted in layouts shortline tagged shortline leave a reply we have a train posted on january 26 2023 by bkivey 1 some w o related rolling stock popped up on ebay and the car department made the purchase the locomotive was on hand and the new purchases were the reefer and the cabooses all from micro trains i was happy to get the reefer because wfex great northern cars are hard to come by i mostly wanted to see how the car was detailed and put together because as noted any rendition of the w o will need about 60 70 reefers to keep it happy and most of those will have to be wfex great northern cars but there is one the cabooses were bought with some reservation because they looked like m t s standard eight window caboose onto which they slapped a bunch of liveries i m not even sure the caboose is based on a prototype i used a couple of these in northern pacific colors until i built a couple of more accurate kits from photos i have on file it s apparent that the great northern cabooses did not look like micro trains version the m t renditions are too long and the windows cupola and ladders are wrong i could possibly section the body and frame and the end rails roof and smokejack may be usable curiously the yellow lettering is the more prototypical i do have a couple of amb great northern caboose kits edit i found that i have six amb gn caboose kits as well as a couple more northern pacific caboose kits so any future w o will have the caboose situation sorted along with the locomotives the front and rear of the trains are in order just need the part in the middle posted in rolling stock tagged rolling stock 1 reply w o trip 2020 pt 4 posted on october 19 2020 by bkivey reply the plan for the day was to follow the w o from chelan north to omak the line is in service as far as oroville but my modeling interest did not go so far both the railroad and us 97 follow the columbia river north along the west bank the road and railway both depart the columbia about five miles east of brewster to follow the okanogan river north it has been an unusually bad fire season in the west this year and where haven t things been unusually bad this year and a few miles north of chelan the east bank of the river had burned over with some ground still smoking the first stop was pateros which i plan to include on a rendition of the w o partly because the railroad makes a layout friendly curve on the approach from the south and the town generated enough traffic during harvest to justify a pateros turn departing wenatchee and only working pateros as the rs 1 s were assigned to scheduled 3rd class local trains 698 north from wenatchee superior by direction and 697 south from oroville it s likely this traffic would have been handled by one of the o 4 mikado s assigned to the division i have seen images of o 4 s working the line as late as 1950 so certainly plausible there were also industries besides fruit so some variety in traffic pateros generated enough car movements to have what amounted to a small yard which is not the case today 1948 timetables show pateros as the meeting point between trains 697 and 698 but the realities of the work often caused hours of delay as there was no dispatcher on duty when the trains ran at night so no way to help one train against another the meet place was often adjusted by train order prior to starting the night s work bridge 58 4 over the methow river is still carrying traffic a little further north is the town of brewster where the railroad turns north up the okanogan valley the bridge over us 97 looking south and a bit north of brewster is this not railroad related but an odd thing to see in north central washington this turned out to be one of the antennas in the very long baseline array vlba while looking around the net i found a photo taken from the telescope that included the railroad and a train brewster is to the left i believe the photographer noted the photo was taken in 2010 which would fit with railamerica ownership from 1996 to 2012 no prizes for guessing which shortline conglomerate owns the line now i do not know what the cars were transporting the great northern located the okanogan depot at mp 91 5 and it and the railroad are located on the eastern side of the river with the oak st bridge giving access to town view south from oak st the siding alongside the warehouse is gone as is everything that was located between the railroad and the river to the right the depot was located on the right about where the sign is now looking north from oak st the end of the warehouse siding is still extant north of oak st the warehouse was there in the late 40 s while the fuel dealer started out as a coal merchant there was a small 2 pen stockyard just past the oil tanks but i do not know if it was active during the time of interest the w o did move stock mostly pigs and sheep but it wasn t a big percentage of revenue much of the area is open range and i don t know what if any arrangements the railroad had with ranchers to move cattle between pastures any such movement would run as extras and have to work around the passenger train making the round trip between wenatchee and oroville about 8 miles north is the town of omak and the end of my modeling interest on the line omak is headquarters to the current operator cascade columbia and the commercial center of the central okanogan valley i believe omak is a must have on nearly any representation of the w o if for no other reason than the biles coleman lumber mill was here and the largest single customer on the line biles coleman was about the only reason the branch maintained regular operations in the summer when the fruit was growing and there wasn t much to do but watch it the mill is still there but i don t know if it is currently rail served during the late 40 s the mill would generate at least a half dozen movements daily shell and standard oil maintained fuel depots north of the railroad about where eastside park is today the rail serving each of the depots ran down separate alleys for about a quarter mile which would be cool to model there is no evidence of any of this today regrettably their street names so avenues now run east west rather than the original north south alignment looking south from brooks tract rd which is a little north of the north end of the town trackage the tank
