ration is a novel agreement with singapore under which the city state commits to continue supplying fuel to new zealand in return for continued food exports according to a senior official it is possibly unique in the world two countries voluntarily waiving their rights to impose export restrictions on each other in a crisis fran o sullivan luxon forged a close relationship with wong before they became prime ministers they talk a similar language share a faith in master planning and a managerial approach to government that is appreciated far more in singapore than here pity fran o sullivan for singapore the logic is simple if new zealand cannot get fuel and diesel it cannot produce food for new zealand tying itself into singapore s highly connected energy and logistics hub vastly improves its chances of staying supplied when markets seize up the singapore agreement slots into a broader luxon era trade architecture where trade and investment minister todd mcclay has played a leading role in the emerging future of investment and trade partnership fit group a coalition including switzerland singapore norway and others where new zealand has been central in pushing workstreams on supply chains non tariff barriers and new subsidy disciplines fran o sullivan taken together these moves demonstrate new zealand is an active rule shaper in niche but crucial areas supply chain resilience crisis trade rules and digital trade luxon s challenge now is domestic agreements like the singapore essential supplies pact are technically dense they are easy to overlook when debate continues over the more theatrical us 20 billion 34b set as an aspirational target for new zealand to invest in india under an fta due to be signed in india this month yet in global shocks whether in fuels food or through pandemic or geopolitical disruption it is precisely these rules based arrangements that will determine whether new zealand can keep its trucks moving farmers supplied with fertiliser and diesel and ships sailing luxon s challenge is to translate that story for voters fran o sullivan capitalists want to voluntarily trade and share knowledge with other people socialists want to control the property speech and lives of other people we are not the same alice smith thealicesmith april 26 2026 on israeli holocaust remembrance day april 14 auckland council s policy planning and development committee voted 14 2 to request a report on sanctioning companies linked to israeli settlement activity the timing alone is striking whether intentional or not it places a highly contested international issue within a deeply sensitive historical moment this move marks a notable moment for activist groups in new zealand particularly organisations such as the palestine solidarity network aotearoa psna which has been a key advocate behind these efforts it reflects the growing influence of advocacy networks in shaping how global conflicts are brought into local political decision making advocacy groups play an important role in democratic societies they raise awareness mobilise communities and bring moral questions into public debate but when local government decisions appear closely aligned with specific activist agendas it raises a more complicated question whose voices are shaping public policy and are elected institutions maintaining independent judgement forough amin the more pressing issue lies elsewhere what these developments reveal about the nature of contemporary human rights activism and how selectively it is applied forough amin within some human rights spaces and within networks connected to groups like the palestine solidarity network aotearoa symbols and messaging associated with the iranian regime have appeared without meaningful challenge this creates a contradiction that is difficult to reconcile a movement that claims to stand for human rights yet overlooks or even tolerates symbols of a regime known for suppressing those rights cannot easily sustain a claim to universality it suggests that what is being presented as a human rights framework may in practice be shaped by political alignment rather than consistent principle forough amin if a local government is prepared to act whether symbolically or materially on one international issue why not others why this conflict and not others of comparable urgency this is where governance begins to blur into activism and where institutional neutrality becomes harder to maintain the implications are not confined to foreign policy debates they are felt locally when public institutions adopt positions on polarising international issues they do not do so in a vacuum they can unintentionally amplify divisions already present within society in diverse communities like new zealand where social cohesion depends on a shared sense of belonging this matters forough amin none of this means that global injustices should be ignored or that public debate should be avoided but it does mean that consistency matters if human rights are to serve as a guiding principle they must be applied evenly not selectively not symbolically and not in ways that align only with certain political narratives auckland council s decision may have been intended as a statement about global justice but in practice it raises a deeper and more uncomfortable question whether the frameworks shaping such decisions are truly grounded in universal human rights or in something far more selective forough amin in australia today women and doctors are being investigated suspended and threatened with the loss of their livelihoods for daring to state what most australians know to be true there are only two sexes sex is immutable men cannot become women and no child is ever born in the wrong body these are not fringe views they are the most basic facts of human biology yet gender ideology has flipped reality on its head speak these truths out loud and you risk being branded a bigot dragged through the courts or stripped of your career sall grover second opinions once standard medical practice are now treated as heresy this isn t medicine it s ideology enforced by regulatory capture sall grover we cannot allow our hospitals regulators courts and human rights bodies to be captured by an ideology that treats biological reality as bigotry australian citizens must not be punished for acknowledging basic reality sall grover if we cannot openly defend the most fundamental truths about human biology without fear of professional destruction we are no longer a free society no one is born in the wrong body no one should lose their job their licence or their reputation for saying so enough australia must stop punishing those who simply tell the truth sall grover but i think it s worth saying because it s a reminder to all of us in the media that our job is to report the facts not to suppress them even when it involves our mates heather du plessis allan the greatest sadness of the india free trade deal for me to this point is that the rhetoric has not paid due respect to where free trade basically began new zealand we are the pioneers well the modern pioneers mike hosking for a while free trade deals had their time in the sun they got i thought a bit watered down with block deals the cptpp is your classic example and even our eu deal is widely accepted as being inferior to proper one on one deals like china or now india because when you get 27 nations together there is bound to be a bunch of protectionists in there india is also worth respecting because it s india and it s been a prize for many many years it s the last truly large country and not just that but a truly large country actually going places if this country has an international calling card it s trade we box above our weight we do business on quality we buy and sell on a fair price and not a jacked up protected price mike hosking it s free trade not perfect trade and even a free trade deal technically can and does host tariffs but the intent and indeed the outworking of them all is that the business between two countries is better freer and bigger than it was before signing nz first are on the wrong side of this and the irony cannot be lost that its leader is a foreign minister who spends his time globally looking to engage and encourage engagement between countries nothing encourages engagement more than doing business mike hosking this without a shadow of a doubt in 20 years will be like china big bold successful and constantly upgraded we will all see it eventually but in the ensuing years since we were free trade evangelists we ve become increasingly myopic if not racist free trade is what we are good at we should celebrate what we are good at more mike hosking the green party has unveiled what it grandly calls a national electrification plan they say it will save the average household 1000 a year on power bills that belongs with the campaign promise of a chicken in every pot and a car in every garage richard prebble voters demand politicians start running and parties compete to sprint fastest with promises but energy policy is not a lion it is engineering economics and arithmetic urgency wins headlines only calculation delivers solutions that work richard prebble energy policy is about trade offs over decades it is about capital costs operating costs probabilities and risk above all it is about systems that must work not on average but in the worst year new zealand s dry year problem is real in some years the hydro lakes do not refill when that happens the country needs firm back up generation to keep the lights on before we had gas every few years there were serious electricity shortages power boards turned off hot water cylinders and industry was asked to reduce use when the māui gas field platform is decommissioned at the end of this year we risk shortages of electricity in a dry year creating back up has a cost whether gas imported fuel storage or demand reduction pretending otherwise does not save a cent it merely hides the bill getting energy policy right is vital there are no high income low energy countries richard prebble the future refuses to co operate with forecasts that does not make modelling useless it does mean projections should be treated with caution not reverence new zealand is not energy poor we have hydro wind geothermal resources and potential gas reserves new technologies will emerge our problem is not lack of options it is politicians choosing favourites and trying to lock in tomorrow s answer using today s assumptions richard prebble the job of government is not to try to dictate the future but to set a framework where solutions compete to provide the lowest cost power politicians are good at responding to danger new zealand would be better off if they could also do the maths richard prebble two major reports released over the past week tackle pressing societal challenges the helen clark foundation s report on social cohesion and koi tū s report on demographics both describe significant forces shaping the country we are becoming and both in different ways look to government as a central part of the answer but what if social cohesion and demographic sustainability are not problems politics can fix in fact what if deferring too readily to government intervention is likely to make these challenges worse the reports are right new zealand s cohesion is not guaranteed demographic change economic stress isolation and distrust are real pressures these are dynamics the government should take seriously but we must remember that social cohesion is not something done to us it is something done by us we must carefully underscore the difference between saying government has a role in policy and pretending government can supply the deeper cultural conditions on which a stable society depends jonathan ayling the italian philosopher augusto del noce warned that when a society loses sight of the deeper things that hold people together politics tends to rush in and fill the gap government is no longer treated merely as a tool for fixing roads funding schools and managing services it becomes the place we look for meaning identity belonging and moral purpose that is far more weight than politics can bear that may sound abstract but it describes one of the great temptations of our day is there a single challenge we face where the state is not expected to provide the solution my question is how well is that working for us jonathan ayling but when deeper sources of belonging weaken we start asking politics to work miracles it cannot perform we ask it to provide meaning identity and solidarity but politics is too thin too combative and too transactional to bear that weight where meaning identity and solidarity already exist politics can harness them very effectively the foundations of our welfare state were laid by a cohesive society producing a nation where fairness equality and tolerance were celebrated but the culture preceded the politics not the other way around cohesion is built in families churches marae schools sports teams and friendships it is built when a new migrant is treated not as a threat or a statistic or a symbol in someone else s political argument but as a person our neighbour and critically it is also built when the receiving nation has a culture confident enough to welcome others without dissolving itself we cannot integrate newcomers into nothing if new zealand is to absorb demographic change well we need more than tolerance we need a common life worth joining jonathan ayling we often speak as though the only alternatives are hostility to immigration or unqualified celebration of change but a mature society should be capable of something better welcoming migrants rejecting xenophobia and still asking serious questions about scale pace social trust and shared civic identity jonathan ayling a government cannot love your neighbour for you it cannot make a family eat dinner together or give you hope in the future such that you want to have children it cannot make a school form character or a citizen choose generosity over suspicion yes policy can help create the conditions in which trust grows removing barriers building infrastructure and setting rules but it cannot supply the habits of neighbourliness sacrifice loyalty and belonging on which our common life depends for that we rely on something deeper than an addiction to politics on anzac day i was reminded of the second verse of our national anthem men of every creed and race gather here before thy face asking thee to bless this place god defend our free land from dissension envy hate and corruption guard our state make our country good and great god defend new zealand so putting the politics policies and strategies aside we might ask a deeper question what sort of culture will form a new generation of cohesive kiwis jonathan ayling now some will argue that journalists should not be held to the same standards as politicians and that i...
