testament to the effectiveness of it follows as a horror movie that i don t take part in the activity that sets the monster after you but it is somehow still the only horror movie i ve ever seen that made me afraid to go to sleep in my own bedroom horror movies it follows 4 notes open in app facebook tweet reddit mail embed permalink stray observations as i watch sadako vs kayako the ring vs the grudge sadako already has the home field advantage they re in a movie that plays in chronological order keep reading movies i m only five minutes in oh my god sadako vs kayako 24 notes open in app facebook tweet reddit mail embed permalink midsommar remains one of the most disturbing horror movies i ve ever seen it is three hours of pure unrelenting tension and if you have the time please take it in at least once or twice with a period to percolate in between so you can appreciate all the extra detail you will take in on a second viewing 1 note open in app facebook tweet reddit mail embed permalink i mentioned in a conversation that i have a theory that a huge problem with horror today is that while there are a few great ones it is mostly mediocre and some of the blame can be placed squarely on a studio push to make as many as possible pg 13 so they can market to younger audiences younger audiences are not the problem kids and teens were finding ways to see rated r horror movies well before this but a huge downturn came when studios started looking at focus groups of kids and trying to sell to them directly my evidence for this being that many people will tell you a sign of a bad horror movie is one that relies really hard on jumpscares and loud sting music do you know why those are overused especially in pg 13 horror movies well what scares kids easily being startled it is the studio trying to rake in dollars by shouting boo at the audience as much as they can that stops being the best way to scare you as you get older a kid sees boo and is scared no matter how often you do it an adult will take maybe one boo and after that if you keep doing it they re just gonna get pissed off it chapter one made a genius move by illustrating the kids were becoming adults by taking their initial reaction to being scared run away hide etc and changing it to pick up a bat and beat the shit out of the thing that keeps startling you if studios want to produce better horror they need to stop trying to cheaply scare children even when the target audience is kids there are better ways to do it and the better stuff coming out thinks harder and smarter about what it s doing than loud noises and boo s period film horror movies 11 notes open in app facebook tweet reddit mail embed permalink there has been this uptick in a certain kind of horror and suspense film in the last few years which i do not have a name for but the common denominator is they re fucking weird weapons longlegs the up and coming hokum looks like it is gonna be in a similar vein i wanna see more of that give me more weird open in app facebook tweet reddit mail embed permalink re a quiet place no spoilers for those that don t know a quiet place is a horror movie about a family surviving in a landscape where blind creatures that hunt via sound even the slightest sound get on with their lives without alerting them to their presence the biggest compliment i can give this movie is that opening night with a good lively crowd that was jumping and gasping and laughing out loud at the trailers preceding the kind who make watching horror movies hilarious everyone reacted throughout the movie at the right points quietly everyone was so into the premise so into what was going on that they were afraid to make any noise even the kind of people who d usually make smartass comments through an entire movie were dead silent if someone dropped an object or if somebody s phone went off the entire crowd would collectively gasp and wince that is a testament to how well the movie plays with its premise go see it a quiet place 7 notes open in app facebook tweet reddit mail embed permalink breelandwalker masakados asked since we re talking horror movies i ve always wanted to get into horror films but i m a huge scaredy cat with paranoia issues on the side and can only really watch bts stuff still fun is there any way you d recommend to ease myself into things a little breelandwalker answered start with things that have a t or pg 13 rating look for things that are fun and spooky rather than bloody or jump scary watch trailers and look up spoilers for anything you re curious about i love horror and i still look up spoilers for certain movies before i watch them just to see if it s something i m going to like you can also try classic movies from the black white era of films since those are scary but not really terrifying you might also like the ruined podcast which features two friends one who loves horror movies and one who is curious but too scared to watch they discuss the plots of various movies with full spoilers and generally have a fun time with it you can also check out the ending explained series made by foundflix on youtube which does basically the same thing but in video format if you re looking for a stepping stone into scary movies that might be a good option there s also the emotional support monster trick if something scares you create or adopt an equally scary creature in your head to be your buddy protector cheerleader i ve done this in the past and it s gotten me through some bad times and made a lot of very scary things a little less daunting and not just as it relates to horror movies also if you have problems with paranoia try to avoid movies about curses urban legends and japanese horror the plots in these movies tend to revolve around things that could ostensibly affect the viewer i e the cursed video from the ring and that won t be a good thing to have in your brain when you feel ready i d also recommend watching my personal favorite movie trick r treat it s an anthology film with a bunch of overlapping stories all taking place on a single suburban halloween night it s definitely scary and a little bit bloody but it s also a lot of fun if you can watch that all the way through you can probably start dipping your toes into other movies and don t be afraid of little sam he loves halloween as much as you do here s the trailer and remember if something is too scary for you or not your cup of tea just turn it off like i said i love horror movies but there are some things that i ve peaced out of or that i don t want to watch it s okay to stick to lighter material if you want a little spooky for your season but don t want to actually be terrified scary movies are like rollercoasters you don t have to get on anything you don t think you can handle have fun impuretale i know this sounds sacrilegious but it is okay to spoil yourself if it will help you consume certain media i almost always read wikis and watch yt reviews for horror films if i think they might be a bit too much for me based on what i already know or do not about them it lets me take it in and decide whether or not i can handle it and there are certain titles that i honestly wish i had done that with before i learned to because they stayed with me in a way that was not good also pg 13 horror is a mixed bag if jump scares bother you because most pg 13 horror is inundated with them and often use those as the primary source of scares i have a theory it is because they are trying to sell tickets to younger viewers and under a certain age being startled over and over again is more enjoyable than it is for say an adult who will be startled the first time and get pissed off when you overdo it it strikes me as the sort of thing studios would push for because the charts and surveys tell them yay jump scares 19 notes open in app facebook tweet reddit mail embed permalink you do not have to wait for the fall for all
