the jensons skip to main skip to sidebar friday june 1 2018 iceland days 3 4 we woke up and had breakfast in our hotel and then drove out to pingvellir national park to snorkel in silfra silfra is where the north american tectonic plate meets the eurasian tectonic plate there is a rift between them and we snorkeled in that rift in the 40 degree water most of the pics from this day are on kris camera but here s a few we geared up in dry suits just putting the suits on took like 20 minutes then we walked down to this platform in the water and then snorkeled in the rift for about 30 minutes it was amazingly clear no animals live in it because it seeps up from the aquifer below it we were actually able to drink from it and i filled up our water bottles with the crisp freezing water and we didn t get sick i stayed dry everywhere except for my hair it was totally wet by the time i got out of the water kris did well but got nauseous towards the end he walked back and barfed a few times but was fine once he got his suit off overall it was an amazing experience here is another area that splits the plates kris is standing perfectly between the plates hundreds and hundreds of years ago the general assembly of iceland met in this location annually they made laws and formed a parliament there thousands gathered here in the center of iceland next stop lunch at the fontana thermal bath no good at all and then we visited the geysers in the national park pretty cool area very similar to yellowstone the best part of the geyser stop was the ice cream afterwards norway has us in love with softis and although this one wasn t nearly as good we still were able to reminisce last stop of the day was at gulfoss waterfall it was amazing for it s sheer size so much water flowing over and it was multiple falls just huge the weather was cool this day and we were bundled up and even had rain jackets on because we were getting splashed from the waterfall that night we had dinner at a gas station hamburger joint not very good but and we talked to the teens that worked there about what kind of candy is good we wanted to bring some home to our kiddos that was typical of iceland they suggested some black licorice tasting candy and so far it s all been nasty but i guess that s part of the experience we went to bed that night and then had a lazy morning we had our last breakfast so typical of our trip i have come to love it we had planned to go tour rekjavik before heading to the airport but instead we just had a lazy morning and slowly packed up our stuff for the flight home it was also raining that morning so we decided we d rather stay inside plus lets be honest we were exhausted what a long full week we enjoyed we got to the airport and grabbed a quick lunch and my last coke light we flew to lax and the flight was unremarkable other than flying over the north pole which was neat when we got home we were planning to uber home but there was no one available we ended up finding a shuttle to drive us back to rancho but it cost us 135 ouch haha just part of the journey i guess we were so desperate to just get home that it was worth it 0 comments thursday may 31 2018 iceland day 2 we loved the guesthouse that we stayed at it s funny to compare the differences in american lodging fancy hotels versus european lodging which was very basic and small but still nice and all that we really needed the breakfast spread was very similar to the traditional norwegian spread meats and cheeses i really enjoyed this type of meal and looked forward to my piece of bread with lunch meat cheese cucumbers and red bell peppers on top i can t wait to do this meal at home i thought the irony of this display board was too funny check out the cute lambs in the field just out the window and oh by the way lamb soup tonight for dinner anyways we had reservations for kayaking in the glacier lagoon that morning so we were excited it turned out to be the highlight of our iceland trip we loved seeing the massive icebergs up close as they floated in the bay the water was turquoise and beautiful it was cold obviously so we were in dry suits it was amazing and surreal and at one point we saw one of the icebergs flip over after the kayaking we had to get in the car and drive all the way back to the other side of the island again the drive was amazing one last look at the glacier as it drapes over the mountain i was loving all the icelandic horses we were driving by and so we stopped to see them they are beautiful and friendly we stopped for lunch at this old cowshed that had been turned into a restaurant called gamla fjosid we shared a steak sandwich and a piece of chocolate cake it was a heavenly lunch date that i won t forget after lunch we wondered around the farm a little bit it was neat to see life in iceland and talking to the people gave us a glimpse of how life and tourism has changed iceland in the last 5 years we had reservations for the blue lagoon that night so we went the blue lagoon is like the 1 tourist activity in iceland it was nice but honestly we had had such an amazing morning in the icebergs that this experience didn t really even come close it was neat though we did mud masks and sat in the hot springs after that we went to our hotel in reykjavik we had to giggle to ourselves about the check in process we were emailed a door code and then once we got in there was a set of hooks with keys on them and you just had to find your last name over the hook and grab your keys and go find your room at check out we put our keys right back on the hook and walked out the door so funny 0 comments wednesday may 30 2018 day 8 goodbye norway hello iceland we woke up the next morning at 3 30 am and headed to the airport we said our goodbyes to mom and dad and then took off our first flight was to copenhagen and then we flew to iceland we got our rental car and headed out to explore iceland we were so nervous because the weather reports looked bad cold drizzly highs in the 40 s luckily we had great weather and it was dry and sunny for us first stop seljalandsfoss it was amazing this waterfall had a path behind it so we got to see the backside of it too and it was incredible just soooo powerful and majestic we got pretty soaked it was beautiful for most of the driving in iceland we were headed for the east side of the island which was 5 6 hours away the white barns with red roofs were so picturesque waterfalls everywhere you turn next stop was skogafoss waterfall it was beautiful too we got to hike to the top and look out over the waterfall and surrounding area we had lunch at a cafe there and were able to look at it while enjoying our salad me and lasagna kris then we drove to the reynisfjara black sand beach where beautiful basalt formations were the splintered hexagonal columns of rock reminded me of devil s postpone in mammoth this area was crowded it was windy and we didn t stay very long pretty church in vik we stopped at a gas station here for a quick snack there were lambs and sheep everywhere so cute to see all over the green countryside ok so remember that i said that there were beautiful parts of the drive well then we had sections that looked like this not so pretty but volcanic lava erupted and then left the area looking like this interesting finally we caught a glimpse of the glacier it s the biggest one in iceland so very neat lamb crossing finally we made it to jökusàrlon glacier lagoon and that was amazing this lagoon full of icebergs in this beautiful turquoise water it was surreal we went over to diamond beach where small pieces of iceberg wash up on shore so bizarre and then we went back to the glacier lagoon because seriously this was amazing we were excited because the next morning we were scheduled to kayak in this lagoon among these icebergs we had to drive clear up to höfn for gas and we ended up having dinner at a place called höfnarbudin it was the best meal we had our entire trip lobster languistine sandwich and fish and chips it was about 9 30 pm but still light and that was our dinner we drove back to our guesthouse and went to bed the guesthouse was basically a room with 2 twin beds no fancy decorations or anything special it is so interesting to see what different places do 0 comments older posts home subscribe to posts atom bleedin blue
