with a sprinkling of bait tech f1 groundbait to help them bind 6mm pellets tub of pop up ringers banded allsorts session after a two week hiatus from match fishing due to having some much needed family time i was itching to get on the bank my best mate matty asked if i fancied a few hours fishing on saturday night and i jumped at the chance we decided to fish my local water kingsdown rd flash known as pollies this lake is quite a large but shallow lake 4ft deep and is stocked with an abundance of species it is a superb water to spend an evening trying different things and the surroundings are great with lots of birdlife to distract you from the fishing it was once a great destination to go for a day s tench fishing but these days most people fish it for the carp with buzzers and bivvies as they reach over 20lb fishing mainly matches and usually on pole dominated waters means i do not get to use my rods that much and i rarely get chance to practice my casting i decided on a method feeder approach for the evening i was only fishing for 3 hours so went with a one rod approach i have fished the feeder on pollies in previous years and struggled due to the amount of silt and blanket weed on the bottom after having a think and seeking some advice i decided to try a pop up dumbell pellet to see if this would help induce a few more bites with it sitting above the weed when arriving i was surprised to see that most anglers fishing were on the side i wished to fish left hand side so i ended up on peg 9 and my mate on peg 10 as these where relatively close together and we could have a laugh and a chat i was quickly set up and raring to go after a couple of practice casts i clipped up my 9ft reactorlite and cast around 30 35m towards the middle of the lake casting every 3 5 minutes to get some bait into my peg i was struggling for bites i didn t even have any liners to keep me interested swapping between the various colours of pop up didn t bring much joy and the first 30 40 minutes went by quickly i decided to try a black pop up pellet and almost instantly i had my first twitch on the rod leaving it a little longer than usual saw the tip arch around and i was into my first fish of the evening the fish carted off to the left and with a little gentle persuasion i quickly had it at close range i slipped my landing net under a lovely long lean mirror carp of around 7 8lb and my session was underway it was evident that the evening wasn t going to be a fish a chuck so i decided to leave the method feeder out a little longer to see if that would make a difference i was now only casting every 8 10 minutes i had to wait around 30 minutes before i got my next bite this time a lovely bream of around 3lb was the culprit on an orange popup wondering whether a bottom bait would pick up fish any quicker i had the next couple of casts with a normal 6mm pellet this resulted in no indications at all i did realise that there was a larger amount of blanket weed surrounding the hook when i brought the method feeder back to be recast with the bottom bait so went back to a popup i decided to drop a bright pop up into the margin to see the presentation and was surprised that it popped up the whole 4 inch of the hl thinking this was a little too much on such a shallow venue i placed 2 no 9 shot around 2 inch from the hook and cast in again this time the rig wasn t in the water 5 minutes when my round shot round with a vicious take and the boils on the surface indicated i was into a bigger fish i quickly unclipped the feeder and played the fish to the net it was the first time i had used the reactorlite on a big fish and the action was superb easily dealing with all the lunges and runs the carp made after a spirited fight a fin perfect common carp was netted matty had his scales so we decided to weigh the fish and it went 10lb 1oz with around 30 minutes left i re clipped my rod and made a few quick casts to ensure i had bait in my peg again after around a 15 minute wait the rod flew round again and i managed to land another nice mirror carp again weighing around 7 8lb on a bright coloured pop up the session was sadly over and i was very pleased with the accuracy of my casts and the decision to use a pop up was a good one pollies isn t a commercial fishery by any stretch so my 3 good carp and a bream in 3 hours was a decent return on the night my mate matty had fished the pole and landed a lovely crucian and a few roach but i hadn t heard any buzzers from the carp lads i think fishing a pop up bait really worked but i don t think colour made much difference next time i will be putting shot 2 inch from the hook from the start and hopefully fishing for a longer duration i really enjoy fishing pollies and don t know why i don t fish the place more often the uncertainty of what the next fish will be and the superb surroundings not to mention it s only 5 minutes walk from my home are things i should bear in mind more often it s a fantastic place for a relaxing evening session and hopefully i will manage a couple more before the dark and cold nights set in 5 comments post navigation older posts next
