mario bros z i thought it was really cool when i was a newgrounds kid in middle school 20 years ago but i never watched all of it and haven t really thought about it much since my main thoughts are that this was before super mario rpg got any sort of rerelease so my first exposure to the axem rangers was the version that pasted their heads onto mega man zero and battle network sprite bodies and archie sonic s popularity a bit ago i have another question if you don t mind how much misogyny is in the archie sonic series as a whole part of what really sparked my interest in finally reading the sonic comics aside from archie s bizarre lore that i can t help but find really entertaining is seeing that they actually utilize the girls and have plenty of girls exclusive to them while the games primarily just use amy and very rarely rouge and cream but reading through the first few archie issues i m on issue 10 there have been a few stories where sally is portrayed as fussy and wrong and winds up needing to be saved by sonic and outside of that she hasn t gotten to do much and while bunnie is very cool when she gets to shine she doesn t show up much either despite being part of the team the early shitpost gag comics have largely been entertaining reads imo and i will always like how sally is the leader rather than sonic it s not only refreshing for a girl to be the leader of the team but i also find sonic being a delinquent a much more interesting take on him then if he was just a typical goody two shoes super hero type character but so far the girls have got to do very little and i m aware of the misogyny penders will bring later on as well as stuff like the abysmal handling of dulcy being an abuse survivor which makes me worry that this might not be a problem the comic grows out of how much of the archie comics are burdened with misogynistic writing and if i were to try avoiding it what arcs would i need to avoid i understand if you don t feel like answering with the series i have written many thousands of words on thankskenpenders over the years about how poorly the archie comics handled their female characters it s not all bad and there are occasional bits of greatness or at least half hearted attempts at girl power stories where the girls get to do more but in a way that potential the comics many female heroes show just makes the lows more frustrating i can t really give a list of specific arcs to skip because gallagher and penders extremely boomer views on gender roles permeate their writing in both subtle and glaringly obvious ways and while bollers is generally better later on he s still saddled with a lot of really stupid editorial directives about soap opera bullshit to do with the girls it really only gets consistently question and i apologize if i m being a pest as an archie sonic expert how popular was archie sonic during its run i had such limited exposure to it the comics and covers included in mega collection and 1 sonic digest issue were all i had and yet growing up i remember seeing that it was so beloved in fact as a kid i remember seeing some people online treat archie sonic as the true sonic and the games as supplemental material to it and even today i feel like the idw comics are the facet of the series that gets discussed most online and yet as a kid i never saw issues in person and never even encountered anyone who owned any archie sonic comics 0 it was almost like a cryptid to me growing up and today some people seem to discredit it as a silly tie in spin off that means very little to the series as a whole but with how big and long lasting archie sonic was and the fact that sonic to this day seems almost as synonymous with comics as he is video games archie sonic had to have been popular right anyways sorry for the random wall of yap i apologize if i m being annoying at all i was just thinking about getting into sonic comics and exploring this dimension of one of my favorite series that i ve missed out on and the question just kept rattling around in my head your thanks ken penders blog played a big part in me wanting to explore archie sonic in particular thank you and have a nice day archie sonic s overall level of popularity is hard to gauge i mean it was the longest running licensed tie in comic book ever so yes it was quite successful but comics are still fairly niche and have only become more niche in the 21st century and the archie comics were hard to come by outside of north america so that success has its limits exact sales numbers for comic books are rarely released so we only have a vague idea of how well any comic sells the rough estimate i can give you is that archie sonic had a respectable following for an american comic book which is much smaller than the audience for a hit video game or cartoon or movie we re probably talking tens of thousands of monthly readers in the 00s and 2010s maybe hundreds of thousands in the 90s when the comics were at their peak and they were both cheaper and available at news stands and general retailers rather than just specialty comic book shops for nerds jazwares also bundled some of their sonic action figures with archie issues for a while in the late 00s early 2010s which is how some kids discovered them but i have no idea how many of those kids converted to regular readers again hard to find reliable sales numbers but compare these estimates to the millions of copies the games sell worldwide without hard numbers what we re left with is vibes and the thing is that the niche archie sonic fanbase was and still is extremely dedicated love them or hate them people had very strong opinions on those comics and cared about what happened in them and when we had one or two new issues coming out every single month for decades there was never a shortage of things to talk about and so the archie comics inspired a disproportionately large amount of fan discussion and had an outsized presence in the fandom most fans absolutely did not see the archie comics as the real sonic especially past the 90s when the games started having more elaborate stories that very clearly diverged from what the archie comics were doing a majority of sonic fans didn t even read them but the people who grew up with them and thought of archie sonic as their one true sonic really really cared about those comics and vocalized that love online the idw comics seem to be more popular than the latter day archie comics due to a mixture of factors like their wider availability worldwide being canon to the games not having decades of their own convoluted lore and romantic drama to scare off newcomers etc but they still generate a disproportionately high amount of fandom discussion despite not selling as well as the games simply because they re the sonic thing releasing new stories for fans to talk about every month especially now that the wait for new games is so much longer these days it s easy for younger fans to write off the archie comics as an obscure evolutionary dead end because they were this weird non canon spinoff with a ton of behind the scenes baggage and also a lot of them were bad but they nonetheless still have an important spot in sonic history not only for their record breaking length but also because so many people working on the franchise today grew up reading those comics and started their careers at archie the most prolific archie sonic writer is literally writing the games now because fans loved his archie run so much that they wanted him and his collaborators to stick around tyson got his start as an archie artist and then went on to save the movies evan s doing a bunch of official art now including stuff seen in the games that s not nothing
