junk bonanza thrifting thursday july 4 2013 happy fourth of july the fireworks won t start until this evening so the morning is quite still just taking a moment to appreciate the freedoms we have here in the united states and count my blessings here is my collection of vintage sparklers they are illegal to light in my city and i do miss the thrill of holding something so bright and sparkly in my collect only a couple of things everything else were just one offs of what i happend to find interesting while out thrifting but today i realized that i have more collections than i realized my favorite find was this 1965 world globe with atlas vintage world globes are one of my admitted collections and the physically largest collection i love old world globes because you can study them to find countries that no longer exist and determine their age this globe was easy to date because the atlas has a publication date another admitted collection are my old christmas ornaments i bought only two that i thought were unique plus a vintage pink christmas corsage i now have three old corsages and am wondering if this constitutes a collection now we also found these old new stock shiny brite stems the green one is dated 1967 and all are labeled made in japan i am not quite sure what they were used for they appear to have a wire stem that is folded at the bottom if anyone knows what they are then please let me know because i ve never seen anything other than glass ornaments made by shiny brite i don t know if you could say that i collect old buttons and wooden spools but i do gather them when i find them i especially like old button cards which could be the start of a collection i love the graphics on the lady washington pearl button card below i also tend to buy vintage cotton bandanas when i see them i already have several with the idea that i am going to use them for a craft project today we found a lot more i don t really collect these but i do have enough to be considered a collection we found this wind up tin popeye speed boat i do have a few old wind up tin toys but it isn t something that i consider a collection we also found this napco national potteries co mallard duck planter i do like ducks but i don t intend on starting a collection except for this collection here i like napco pieces and this happened to be a lovely piece i decided that i need to redefine what i consider a collection i used to think that three or more of anything was a collection but in this age of ebay where you can amass a collection all at once i now define a collection as a group of objects that i enjoy gathering and displaying i enjoy displaying all of my world globes and my vintage christmas items i do not display my bandanas so they are just pieces of fabric i only ponder this concept of collections because i don t want to rapidly gather masses of any one thing but rather to enjoy the slow hunt of objects on my thrifting weekends and it is because i don t want masses of any one thing that i surprised myself when i stopped to consider the number of objects that i truly do like to collect and display anyone have any thoughts about their collecting addictions 2011 christmas decorating with a new puppy i love decorating for christmas i have been collecting ornaments since the early 1970s this year we have a new puppy that is a little too curious for her own good so this year i am not putting up a full christmas tree and exposing my ornament collection to the whims of a very nosy pup this year we are decorating in miniature and high off of the ground i placed my silver tree with all of my small shiny brite ornaments on top of my display cabinet in the cabinet i placed my other vintage christmas items as well as some dolls and silver everything is thrifted except for the midge doll i had to find a way to display my larger shiny brite ornaments so they are nestled in a tiered basket along with my large vintage bottlebrush wreath my final bit of decorating is my stack of vintage doll suitcases i tied them up with large red ribbon to look like presents so far the puppy hasn t been able to reach anything the house isn t quite as festive but at chandelier crystal collection this has been a very odd week for me at work i ve been preparing for the cha craft and hobby association trade show at home i ve been dealing with the loss of my beloved dog it has been a mix of super highs and extreme lows i am thankful that selena at apron thrift girl is hosting her collect share link party it has given me something to enjoy working on by gathering photos of one of my collections today i m showcasing my collection of chandelier crystals i started collecting these years ago mostly from the rosebowl swapmeet in pasadena the challenge was to try and find as many unique crystals as possible without duplications or overspending it has been great fun to hunt for these here is the majority of my collection there are no duplicates but there are some very similar styles below are images of some of my favorite pieces i used to hang these in my sunniest window so my room would be filled with rainbows like in the disney movie pollyanna i ve first 2011 estate sale we discovered a resale estate sale i thought the new year would start off slowly but i found some really nice treasures there is nothing like a lime green aluminum pitcher to immediately attract your attention i have seen aluminum cups in bright colors but i ve never seen a pitcher the photo does not convey the true green color this is a norben ware pitcher which i hope does not get me started collecting matching cups this is an interesting 1962 atlas that states space age world atlas and earth as seen by the astronauts i loved the image of the astronaut in the bright neon colors of the 60s the space age began approximately five years before this atlas was printed in 1962 only about 22 united states astronauts had ever been in space and it wasn t until seven years later that man first walked on the moon space exploration was very new and exciting when this atlas was printed i was attracted to these copper brass measuring cups because of their color and their heavy weight they seemed old because newer copper measuring cups wouldn t weigh as much as this set the copper finished just looked pretty i seem to be starting a collection of measuring cups since this is an addition to my previous treasure find this federal star glass juice pitcher looked so cute with its petite size and the star on the bottom i found quite a few of these swedish tartlet molds i liked their shape and saw a lot of crafting potential in them i plan to use the heart shaped molds for some valentine projects click here to see some finished projects using the heart tartlet pans one can always find a use for red floral picks these will be set aside for future christmas projects and then there were the old christmas ornaments oh how i love old ornaments these first two have a unique round shape protruding at the bottom the pink ornament also has three indented shapes around it these gold deer ornaments have a concave side with a plastic deer and snow set inside the ornament is marked japan the gold ornament below is a teardrop shape and is marked poland this last photo is of tiny shiny brite ornaments these are perfect for my vintage plastic christmas tree sorry i forgot to reveal the best part that made this such a fun and thrifty treasure hunt everything was at half price so i got all of this for about 25 which also included sales tax 2011 has started off m a big fan of selena at apron thrift girl and she has started a collect share link well it didn t take much to convince me to share photos of things i love to collect this is my favorite collection old world globes i love finding globes or maps with old political boundaries that no longer exist i bought most of these over ten years ago the large globe on the right is actually a lamp i love the scene in the movie while you were sleeping when the father is reading to the young sandra bullock character and in the background is this world globe light warm fuzzy memories the smallest globe is a pencil sharpener that i bought recently at a garage sale the two medium globes are coin banks this is just a small part of all of the vintage things i love to collect let s hope apron thrift girl does estate sale thrifting today i created additions to my ephemera collection and more it is a rainy weekend here in southern california in spite of a bit of rain we went to a half off day at an estate sale i admit that i have a collection of a lot of odd things but they all have two things in common 1 they are vintage and 2 i like something about them i first dug through the small collection of postcards and cabinet cards i found four lovely postcards that were so sweet plus i found a cabinet card of a photo of two sailors but on the back was the most beautiful art nouveau illustration that i just couldn t pass up i found a box of dominoes they must be from around the midcentury because the dominoes are very dense but they are in a green vinyl wrapped box i plan to do some altered art with the dominoes then there was this automatic adding machine and subtracts considering the technical advances in inexpensive calculators today i thought this automatic adding and subtracting machine was rather quaint this is made in american and must be about midcentury i selected one piece of hand embroidered linen that i thought was very sweet and i needed for a project i have in mind my final find was an unopened bag of christmas tree candle clips these are heavier than the modern versions and have a nice pinecone pattern on the underside of the clip i hope you enjoy my treasure thrifting thrifting sunday november 14 2010 child size cooking utensil collection today i created a collection of child size cooking utensils it was another warm and beautiful southern california autumn weekend so we found ourselves at a garage sale where the person was an avid garage saler selling off her collections there were large quantities of vintage glassware and old pyrex cooking bowls in a variety of colors and styles i was attracted to the smaller child sized toy cooking utensils that had the old red wooden handles i bought a mini muffin tin 4 x 5 75 two mini rolling pins and a cake decorating tool with six nibs still in the box i also found two more tin noisemakers for my collection and an old camera with instructions and a flash attachment i know that i have more old cameras stashed away 7 2010 tin toy collection today i created additions to my tin toy and noisemaker collections it is a lovely autumn day here in southern california so i spent the morning browsing at the local outdoor antique fair i found three items to add to my collections earlier in october i found a nice lot of tin noisemakers today i found one more to add to that collection it is a slighter smaller version of one of the designs i already had i also found a tin spinning top i ve seen smaller versions but this one is about 5 1 2 across and very colorful the best find was a tin junior dial typewriter i love
