nuanced take on this on his substack post a refusable future i think is worth referring to here as well go read the whole thing but to quote it s hard to know whether this decision is based upon specific communication from the government or a matter of anticipatory obedience but it seems that the end result is the same institutions across higher education have been treated to a long series of ransomware attacks by the mad king whether this attack is self inflicted or not it feels of a piece with the past year and a half so yes politics politics and it s about money though i don t think it s just or even mostly about the cccc s money problems back in the 1990s early 2000s annual attendance at the ccccs was closer to 5 000 in 2026 as i understand it attendance was more like 2500 and that too was one of the reasons i presume that the ncte ec said the organization needed to go away that interest in the ccccs was shrinking to the point where it just needed to be folded into the larger organization then there s ncte i haven t had a lot of luck trying to figure out what ncte membership numbers were like in the 1990s because i don t have time now to do some real research much in the same way i don t actually have time to write all of this but as far as i can tell when i first went to ncte in 1994 there were about 50 000 dues paying members the best estimates i ve seen for current ncte membership are around 25 000 that s a big drop going from 5 000 or so members and or attendees at a conference to 2 500 is bad going from 50 000 to 25 000 is much worse on facebook one of the folks in the field who i think maintains a pretty low profile so i won t mention her here posted this link about ncte s finances on propublica s nonprofit explorer site now i am not someone who is very good at understanding financial statements there are good reasons why i am an english professor and why i never went into administration but my simple gut feeling from looking at this myself was to think that the organization has a lot of money in the bank but they ve been losing money too then i decided to ask claude and by the way if you want an example of why the problems do not entirely rest with the ncte ec and why academics all too frequently cannot have nice things take a look at the post i made on facebook and how a member of the cccc ec now resigned i believe took this discussion as an opportunity to berate me on the use of ai for anything whatever working from what for me is the obvious disclaimer that no one should ever take ai results at face value and that you should always be skeptical of anything ai tells you here s a link to the output from claude my basic and i do mean basic take away from this is that while ncte s finances are fine for now the organization s revenue in the form of memberships and sales of publications are decreasing and the long term picture does not look great here s how claude summarized it ncte is a well capitalized organization running an unsustainable spending rate against a shrinking mission revenue base nothing breaks in the next three to five years but absent either a 3m year revenue turnaround or a comparable expense reduction the endowment funds a slow decline rather than a mission and the first extended flat or negative market will make the arithmetic visible fast on a 10 15 year horizon at current trajectory the reserve is depleted not preserved again take with a grain or three of salt though when i shared the propublica s site and claude s reading of it with a colleague of mine at emu who teaches finance classes and who reviews documents like this all the time he told me that claude is more or less about right the other thing that strikes me by looking at the propublica data is the m out of touch on the median salary for someone in charge of a non profit with 50 000 er 25 000 members in this country but just shy of 300k in total compensation for an organization that has been losing money and hemorrhaging members for some time sure seems like a lot so maybe call me crazy here but just maybe the executives running the ncte who convinced the voting members of the ncte ec that the only way to go forward was to throw the ccccs overboard had a personal stake in that happening we live in times where everything everywhere is collapsing and that goes double triple for the world of academia consider academic conferences and journals for example and not just the ccccs or ncte across the board both have been in decline for some time and covid which ncte cccc both managed horrifically imo pushed academic conferences into a death spiral the cost of everything has gone up and the institutional funding that helps attendees cover the expenses of attending conferences have gone down this has forced individuals attending these conferences to go less often if at all and as the number of attendees at a conference decreases organizers have to increase the costs and the spiral of death continues the same with journals and one thing that has yet to be sorted out in the whole mess is the future of the journal college composition and communication once upon a time almost every university library would automatically subscribe to the whole suite of ncte journals and books that s not true anymore and without revenue from its conferences and publications academic organizations like the cccc and ncte particularly bloated and bureaucratic organizations run by overly compensated executives like ncte are in trouble ncte has made the decision to solve their financial problems for now by getting rid of the ccccs but i don t think that addresses the unsustainable spending rate against a shrinking mission revenue base problem we also live in times where there are clear advantages to organizations that are more nimble smaller and technologically sophisticated this is surely a bad comparison but look at the success of drone warfare in both the russian ukrainian war and our own schrödinger war in iran conventional military predicted that the much large militaries of russia and the u s would win against their smaller adversaries in a matter of weeks and that clearly has not worked out needless to say i think ncte is analogous to the big military and i think this is a moment of opportunity for the ccccs to reinvent itself into a smaller more nimble and more technologically sophisticated organization and there s a lot of energy for that right now at least on facebook and in discussions going on at the cccc l site traci gardner has started as i ve said before i m definitely not one of the people who should be leading this effort for all kinds of patently obvious reasons i am a lot more willing to put my time and even some of my money toward an effort to come up with whatever comes next though and i m already seeing people floating plans and even gatherings to begin the process of talking about what the next thing might look like that s encouraging that doesn t mean i don t have some suggestions for whatever comes next and i ll close with my short list a lot of the chatter i ve seen on facebook or the cccc l site in the immediate aftermath of all this have been about what the former ccccs partnering up with another existing organization i think the rsa and mla are the most frequently floated suggestions maybe that s how this will turn out but personally i d prefer that whatever comes next is a new organization beholden to no other group there s also been a lot of chatter about mechanisms and meetings for discussing what comes after the cccc including the gathering in michigan i linked to above conversation and keeping the energy up on this is great but it seems to me that the first place to turn to for leadership on whatever comes next is the existing cccc ec group after all these people were elected by the membership and they presumably have some sense about how things worked before perhaps they ought to be at least the start of this process whatever comes next must must must be more transparent and forthcoming with membership about just what the hell is going on one of my colleagues who i respect a lot mentioned on facebook that folks invested in the ccccs need to go to the business meeting of the group to get this information well i understand the point but for regular people who go to the conference for a couple of days and are usually on their way home when the business meeting happens that s not usually an option besides that s just one public facing meeting i am a big believer in publicly released minutes of meetings especially of executive committee meetings obviously i don t mean detailed minutes or transcripts or anything that would be confidential for personnel reasons or whatever but at a minimum a new organization ought to make it a point to do something that as far as i can tell the ccccs and the ncte have never done release summary minutes of executive meetings and also a summary of the finances i shouldn t have to hunt that down via a link someone shared to propublica and rely on a plain language explanation from ai this is certainly a moment to reflect on the mission of an organization focused on writing pedagogy and scholarship in higher education and i think those conversations are going to need to percolate a bit people want to have their chances to share suggest vent and who knows what direction that takes but i don t think we should lose track of what i see as the three biggest priorities of a new cccc like group the conference the journal and a home for the history policy documents etc on ccc ncte org that last one should probably be dealt with soon and i believe that s happening at the cccc l website because i guarantee you and based on personal experience ncte will have absolutely no problem with just disappearing all of that stuff from the website and whatever files they have speaking of which please whatever organization comes next please do not be as stupid about technical infrastructure as both the ccccs and ncte have been forever posted on july 14 2026 july 14 2026 zero books read even before i started reading rose horowitch s long essay in the atlantic the title the end of reading is here both aggravated me because no it s not and also brought back a memory from my days as an mfa student in creative writing from 1988 to 90 i earned that degree at virginia commonwealth university and my advisor was the writer lee smith for reasons i don t completely understand lee was on faculty at vcu for only a year and i was lucky enough to work with her she was fantastic always generous with her time encouraging but also pointed in her advice so smart etc great writer great teacher great person anyway there was some kind of event in either 1989 or 1990 where she was giving a speech about the state of writing and literature and what not i don t remember if it was a panel discussion or a lecture or what but i do remember it was a big crowd one of the observations lee made in that speech was that the average number of books read for pleasure by americans that year was zero because most people do not read books for pleasure at all so whenever i read essays like this one proclaiming that now now the end of reading has arrived i always roll my eyes a bit horowitch romanticizes a past where typical americans were well read and famous writers were well famous she mentions the appearance of famous american writers on the cover of time or life magazine back in the 50s and 60s she laments the disappearance of newspapers and of difficult novels and also the rise of interest in young adult fiction even by those who are decidedly not young adults i suppose literary culture was a bigger deal in america in the 1950s and 60s and before but as someone who has been teaching at opportunity granting universities ever since i met lee smith i assure you the supposed end of reading arrived many years ago the idea that most people don t read fiction or poetry for pleasure might be shocking to a group of english majors or columnists for the atlantic but when you teach general education classes like composition or introductory literature at a university where a significant percentage of the students are ill prepared for college and you ask these students about reading for pleasure lee s zero books average seems about right it s been like this since i started teaching on average i always have at least a few students in freshman comp who do read books though they re always most invested in genres like science fiction romance and fantasy the kinds of easy and non literary fiction that horowitch characterizes as the wrong kind of books but with maybe three to five book readers in a class of 25 students i suppose rounding down to a zero number of books read per year on average is about right i haven t taught a gen ed lit course in at least 20 years but i certainly had students back then who had never read a complete novel before a couple of years ago i assigned the johann hari book stolen focus in freshman comp it s an accessible best selling non fiction book about the decline in attention and for several students it was the first book they had ever read english majors are of course more likely to be readers but most of them seem less
