shop bear michael johnston uses it to wish that his coworker inde navarette would fall madly in love with him what bear is about to learn however is that you should be careful about what you wish for the tale in obsession is a cautionary one a story about how what we want might not be what we need and how it can harm others it s a damning indictment of so called nice guys those losers on the internet obsessing over someone and wondering why they don t like them back it shows how this type of toxicity can blind a person to what harm their shit can do to themselves and others obsession of course takes it to an even greater extreme with its intense horror angle which lends its message a sledgehammer like bluntness and impact and within this is also a very potent discussion of consent it s an interesting layered and deeply discomforting narrative one that made me constantly feel like i needed a shower and one that had me on edge for most of the runtime it does lose steam in moments throughout but overall it s a damn solid story the characters in this are decently interesting they generally all feel quite like people i ve seen in real life bar one extreme exception for good reason and it helps grounds their stories in fairly compelling ways michael johnston plays bear our protagonist a guy with a crush and bad habits of how to handle them he s not a great guy but he is interesting and his arc in this movie i found quite engaging with johnston giving a really solid performance and then we have inde navarette as nikki the coworker bear is crushing on and finds herself forced into this horrible situation she goes through some really intense shit that i won t say more about because i wouldn t want to ruin it but i will say that inde navarette is fantastic giving a hauntingly multifaceted performance that had me sad mad and sca re d genuinely fantastic stuff we also see supporting work from people like cooper tomlinson megan lawless andy richter and more all doing quite well in their respective roles the score for the movie was composed by rock burwell and i hate it not because it s bad in fact it s great but it s just really unnerving had me thinking nope no thank you at multiple points it s this heavily synth based score that builds an otherworldly atmosphere reminds me a little bit of akira yamaoka s work in silent hill 2 with certain tracks obsession was written edited and directed by curry barker and he did a really good job with it him and cinematographer taylor clemons do really interesting things with their framing using angles that show backgrounds and shadows to play tricks on our minds somehow making scares obvious and surprising at the same time which gives them a walloping quality that legit made someone scream in my screening there s also some violence in this and good fucking god i can handle violent content in movies but this made me wince this movie has been very well received on rotten tomatoes it has a 96 positive rating and a fresh certification on metacritic it has a score of 77 100 and on imdb com it has a score of 8 2 10 obsession is a really mean and fresh feeling horror film and i really dug it it has a really good story good characters great performances fantastic music and great directing time for my final score ahem my final score for obsession is an 8 87 10 so i would definitely say it s season 1 2022 16 05 2026 16 05 2026 themarckoguy 1 comment hey on occasion i talk about tv stuff too ladies gents and non binaries dark winds season 1 1971 police lieutenant joe leaphorn zahn mcclarnon starts investigating a series of seemingly separate violent crimes and we follow him as he dives deeper and deeper into these rabbit holes unveiling secrets most dark all while facing his own past traumas i enjoyed the story here it s a dark and brooding cop thriller but also an oddly warm and hopeful tale of reconciliation which helps make for an emotionally nuanced story it does lose some impact due to its brevity there are a lot of moving pieces and a lot of plot elements but since we only have six episodes all of them around 40 minutes long the pacing of the whole shebang can feel rushed had we had even two more episodes it could ve been allowed to slow down and unfold at a more natural feeling rate i will also say it s interesting getting a slightly more native focused take on a cop thriller now from a cursory bit of research i ve found out that it s not faultless in its portrayal of navajo culture apparently there are certain inaccuracies but what we do get still adds an interesting flavor to the show and gives a richer feel to the world so yeah i do enjoy the tale being told here and the individual episodes have some great bits to them with a great atmosphere going throughout but it does overall move a little too fast to make the most of it i thoroughly enjoyed the characters here all layered and complex each revealing a rich history as the series unfurls past traumas current predicaments and interpersonal chemistry is explored nicely and helps give these characters some really good nuance joe leaphorn is our de facto protagonist an aging navajo policeman with a generally stoic disposition that hides a softer damaged inside he s a really compelling character with zahn mcclarnon giving a beautifully understated performance on a quick side note can i just say that i love seeing him get top billing here i ve seen him steal the show in supporting roles for years so it s great to finally see him have a meaty lead part anyhow next up we have jim chee a new deputy in leaphorn s station he s initially presented as the slightly brash youngling but quickly we re shown more sides to him and find out what a nicely multifaceted figure he ends up being with kiowa gordon delivering a really solid performance and next up we have bernadette another one of leaphorn s deputy a no nonsense yet kindhearted police officer whose relationships with the locals is nicely explored throughout she s played by jessica matten and she s really good we also get supporting performances from people like jeremiah bitsui eugene brave rock noah emmerich deanna allison elva guerra jonathan adams and more all delivering really solid work the score for the show was composed by stalwart tv composer kevin kiner with his kids deana and sean also joining him for this and i really enjoyed the score the soundscape in dark winds takes inspiration from westerns and even horror creating a foreboding and brooding soundscape that builds an engaging sense of dread and tension while also retaining a sense of underlying warmth it s great stuff and there are also a handful of licensed songs used throughout and i think they re really well used here inspired by the novel the listening woman by tony hillerman dark winds was developed by graham roland with directing duties being divided between chris eyre and sanford bookstaver and i think the craft here is solid episode one has some weird choppy editing choices but when we get past that it s a sturdily built show it s well shot lovingly capturing both the beauty and desolation of navajo country which helps add to the great atmosphere there s also good use of light and shadow to wring out some nice tension out of each scenario it s just a well crafted bit of tv this show season has been well received on rotten tomatoes it has a 100 positive rating and a fresh certification on metacritic it has a score of 80 100 and on imdb com it has a score of 7 7 10 while the story feels a little rushed at times and the first episode is a bit oddly edited season 1 of dark winds has a lot of great stuff going for it that made me glad i started watching it has a good story great characters great performances great music and really good directing time for my final score ahem my final score for season 1 of dark winds is an 8 02 10 so it s very much worth watching my review of dark winds season 1 is now themarckoguy 1 comment last year saw the release of the third part of alex garland s apocalyptic horror franchise which started in 2002 with 28 days later to celebrate that i watched the first two entries for the first time wrote a bit about it here and found myself thoroughly enjoying them and now that the fourth movie in the series aka the second one in this revival has hit home video i figured i should do a follow up piece oh and i guess spoiler warning i m gonna have to discuss the ending of the first movie we re covering as it sets up the second so yeah check em out then come back if you don t want certain reveals spoiled 28 years later 2025 some time one might argue 28 years after the rage virus started ravaging the uk the country s been locked off from the outside world caught in the middle of this whole ordeal is spike alfie williams a young lad born into a secluded little island community who finds himself going onto the mainland where he discovers the horror and wonders that now cover the british lands 28 years later features one of the strangest stories i ve had the pleasure of experiencing it s this deeply unique and odd take on a post apocalypse almost playing like a fever dream ish blend of the last of us and heartbeat we see spike facing the more immediate horrors and brutality of trying to not get killed by the infected while also facing personal family traumas involving his very troubled father aaron taylor johnson and his ill mother jodie comer the story has this eclectic tone of balancing horror drama and at times even comedy and on the rewatch i recently had i found myself loving the story on my first watch in the cinema last year i wasn t 100 sure how to feel but this time around i could appreciate its weird nuances really enjoying the artistry behind its big swings it s as much a tale of survival as it is about toxic masculinity love and finding light in the darkness it s oddly hopeful and warm for such a grim setting and it had me welling up at a point it s a story that does divide people but i very much loved it in a similar camp you have the characters a bunch of deeply complex figures who aren t as cut and dry spike might be one of the more off the bat straight up figures in the movie as he is our point of view and the one who sees the most development by the end a sweet kid who sees so much dark going through a really interesting internal struggle with alfie williams delivering a knockout performance aaron taylor johnson jodie comer and ralph fiennes all also deliver top notch work as well in the directing seat we once again find one mr danny boyle and as with a bunch of his other films he doesn t rest on his laurels his directing is deeply eclectic from using iphone rigs to shoot to intense and odd editing to some haunting filters him and his crew pull out all stops to craft something wholly unique and at times deeply gorgeous and the music is really interesting for one it s the first one in the series not to be done by john murphy but rather by scottish progressive hip hop act young fathers and also because it is a fascinatingly odd soundscape of synthesizers strings piano and vocals that create an esoteric haunting intense and emotionally rich score promised land calling card and remember are a few of the standout pieces for me i loved this movie it s a truly unique entity and i am so glad it exists it has and will continue to put people off due to being a very wild departure from what many might ve expected but that is part of its charm for me it s a deeply affecting and thrilling film that i won t stop thinking about and now onto the next one 28 years later the bone temple 2026 pssst this is where i ll spoil the end of the previous movie if you forgot about that warning from the start of the post after his mother s passing and the abandonment of his home spike set out to explore the vast world of the british countryside where he found himself rescued from infected by a strange group of tracksuit wearing oddballs led by the charismatic if mildly creepy jimmy crystal jack o connell a little bit later we pick up with spike finding himself being harassed by the group trying to make it through each day meanwhile the returning dr kelson ralph fiennes is conducting experiments to try and understand the infection a bit more if the first movie was an exploration of hope and love the bone temple is more about the exploration of evil and of not losing oneself it s a much grimmer tale on the whole with more instances of bad shit being perpetrated by man while also featuring this through line of trying to maintain one s humanity in a world where its so easy to lose sight of it this movie arguably has a more straightforward narrative in that sense as a lot of the weirdest legwork was done in the first one allowing for more familiar territory to be explored while still maintaining the heart of what came before we ve seen apocalypse stories about cult of personality we ve seen apocalypse stories where the main cause is turned on its head somewhat we ve seen stories where ralph fiennes is an absolute oddball and it allows this tale to be more digestible while still having a very interesting flavor of its own a flavor that feels very britpop the story just evolves its vibe here in an oddly musical way fascinatingly leaning into some of the uk s music history in order to give its story and characters a very human grounding that resonated on a level i can t even begin to describe it s a narrative that s as brutal as it is beautiful as dark as it is bright as nasty as it is for lack of a better word fun the characters continue being great evolving in really engaging ways and showing a fascinating amount of layers that work for both drama and humor making them feel more real than i think i might ve anticipated i also find it really intriguing to see these personalities clash from their wider ideologies to their deeper quirks it makes for some really electrifying character dynamics and as before the cast is superb alfie williams is once again fantastic i hope he has a very good career jack o connell coming hot off of his villainous turn in sinners once again brings us another deliciously abnormal figure playing jimmy crystal in way that are equal parts unnerving and a bit of fun and then you have ralph fiennes who stole the show in 28 years later and commits absolute fucking highway robbery here with an an incredible performance that shows every range of human emotion in believable and magically entertaining
