part of a fiction serial in 762 words once they got settled back in elgin maria got down to work in the converted loft that she used as a fully equipped office and writing room at first andy felt like a spare part but he settled into taking on the role of house husband very quickly he also became great friends with wilfred and took him out for long walks twice a day in all weathers every night after quite basic dinners andy and maria would sit and chat they went over his notes talked about the plot and characters and she would disclose how well the book was coming on having a true story to adapt into fiction had really inspired her and she was working at double her usual daily word rate on week four they began to share the same bed and both remarked on how completely natural that felt maria had changed one aspect of the plans though as she explained to him late one night as they sat drinking large glasses of single malt while wilfred snoozed on his dog bed by the fireplace i think it is going to be best to delay the wedding until i have a publication date andy let s get the book finished and edited have a few publicity events arranged then i will announce that i have married the love of my life after rekindling a romance that had been interrupted by a far too long period of time is that okay with you my love still amazed that she actually wanted to marry him andy told her it was more than okay with him as a harsh winter mellowed into a pleasant spring maria ran downstairs one afternoon clutching a memory stick i ve done it it has gone off to the publisher for editing and to my agent to make sure he keeps on top of things let s go to the pub later and celebrate with one of their bottles of very dubious champagne angela had been the perfect assistant to the controller for some months now he had even noticed that she had stopped arguing and was doing whatever she was instructed to do they had a new mission approved by mr gale who had got the promotion he had sought by disposing of his predecessor the mark was a russian oligarch viktor sheverenko the man was a front for putin s russia disguised as some kind of international playboy billionaire living on a yacht the size of a hotel in monaco and holidaying on a private island off the coast of croatia his real job was to run a european spying network for russia that extended across france and italy into the balkans even angela had to concede that he was a genuine target and definitely deserved his fate meanwhile she had her own fish to fry she worked all hours covering her tracks as she approved yet more surveillance on andy conway and his girlfriend maria douglas when the reports came back they made her grind her teeth in frustration a happy couple conway not working but just walking a dog and buying groceries douglas never leaving the house except to go to a restaurant or pub with conway if she wasn t suspicious by nature angela might have thought that they had just become a couple and established a life in the pathetic northern scottish town of elgin about as far from civilisation as you could get unless you counted inverness which she certainly didn t conway was hardly using his phone or laptop and angela had still been unable to get permission to monitor maria s electronic devices or to put surveillance cameras or sound devices in the cottage she had thought about using a teenage hacker from a south london housing estate to hack into douglas computer but he was so unreliable she was worried that it would go tits up so she was finally and reluctantly having to face it if those two brought her department down with whatever they were up to she would take her revenge and in any way possible give a chance to read the first draft of the manuscript andy was mightily impressed maria had managed to include all the facts and incidents and even though she had changed the names and many locations too he could easily see everything he had been working on clearly explained in what read as a great novel about conspiracies ruthlessness callousness and a government out of control more importantly once they went public with the real names and real truths behind it from britain we had to go out anyway and decided to leave it until late afternoon as the supposed best time to see the eclipse was between 5pm 7pm first stop was the tile and flooring shop on the industrial estate behind the tesco superstore we chose some wall and floor tiles for the new shower room that is replacing the bathroom and told the salesman that our plumber would be in later this month to buy them back outside just before 5pm no sign of an eclipse starting quickly popped around to tesco to buy a gift voucher for a family birthday coming up still hot and sunny when we came out then we decided to go to the homeware shop the range to buy a new toilet roll holder hand towel ring and small waste bin to have ready for the new shower room that s only a 5 minute drive from tesco by the time we left there it was getting closer to 6pm but the sun was still shining brightly a short drive back to the car park in town we had found out that the turkish restaurant was open again after a short holiday closure and we were the first people in there for dinner starters and main course eaten and enjoyed we took our drinks outside to sit at the small table on the street by then it was 7 20pm and still quite sunny but a few degrees cooler on the way home the sun was shining so brightly we had to have the sunshades flipped down inside the car windscreen we concluded that we had twenty fourth part of a fiction serial in 773 words andy only heard one side of the conversation maria was having on the phone but as she was half smiling he presumed it was nothing too serious he said what and just from a story outline he wants what a complete explanation of why the stones do what they do and a definite ending well tell him from me he isn t going to get one and the reason is simple there is undoubtedly going to be a sequel and it would not do to let the readers know everything in the first book okay so you ll tell him i m not going to be around for a couple of days things to do i will call you when i get back and he will have hopefully calmed down she hung up and looked at andy my agent he s had a call from the publisher and that guy thinks the book should have a firm conclusion and also wants me to make up some crazy scientific reason why the stones make people suicidal for god s sake i only did a run through with him it s not even a first draft if he thinks he can write best selling novels he should quit publishing and write one himself angela made sure to put on some of the blue latex gloves from the dispenser on the wall even though the watch was in a sealed transparent plastic evidence bag the mortuary woman was giving her a shifty look as it probably wasn t every day that they got a call to hand over property to someone who was not a relative or a copper and her i d was non specific just stating home office next to her photo it was one of several issued to her that were used to make sure the person seeing them didn t make an immediate connection with the security services back at headquarters she went to the property room and let herself in using the door code she made an entry into the old school ledger book taking the reference number that followed on from the one above then she took down one of the security boxes opened it using the door code again and wrote the ledger reference number on the white card on the outside of the box instead of placing the watch inside she left it empty then she closed the box and took it to the shelves at the back of the room moving other boxes out of place to slot it in out of order by the time anyone noticed she would have had time to do what she intended in his london flat andy and maria were looking at two piles of stuff on the living room floor one was the keep pile the other the chuck out pile wilfred had made himself comfortable on the two seater sofa and then dropped off to sleep they had four days left on the notice period but only intended to sleep there one more night before heading back to scotland early the next day the property rental company had told andy it would take a full calendar month for his deposit to be returned once a full check of the premises had been carried out to look for any breakages stains or damage his boss at the newspaper had already paid his salary and made arrangements to transfer his pension entitlement once andy gave him the details of the company he had chosen andy didn t like to think about how pleased the editor had been to let him resign not a word asking him to reconsider all his outstanding holiday pay credited without fuss still he knew that small local papers were struggling even though most were owned by bigger corporations he could see it going completely online by the end of the year the pile of stuff to keep was mainly clothes shoes paperwork and books they had brought cardboard boxes with them the day before and by late afternoon everything was packed up ready with the things to be thrown away placed in a row of black plastic bin bags in the hallway to be taken down to the large communal bins situated outside the flat maria seemed happy that it had all gone so smoothly right lets get cleaned up and changed then we can take wilfred for a walk in the park at the end of the road on the way back we can get a bottle of wine and some takeaway food to eat something tastier than we had at
