to reinvent themselves in today s age of unforgiving social media and product reviews mushrooming between 30 seconds to 1 minute it s a national pastime nowadays the past week we woke up to a heartbreaking social media message of rahul roy the heartthrob of the 90s in aashiqui who was mocked by social media for appearing in a not so fancy instagram video it all started when the actor posted on his instagram about being at the receiving end of social media trolls just because he is earning through insta videos since he needs the money to settle a few legal matters pre his brain stroke just because the actor chose to appear in a video reel the case study of those useless social media trolls being at work is intriguing a not so rare species that will sit and mock the effort of every single person comparing them to what they were at their peak and making fun of their work no work is small it s better to work in a simple manner rather than sitting idle faking stories the municipal library to be thrust among books opening the eyes into the universe of books thick copies images and short books flapped happily flitting from one book to the other one sunny afternoon happily bored as the anticipated school bell struck mom took me to the library as the tiny feet straddled happily to the junior corner the day i was inducted into books as she bribed the caretaker with the promise of spicy hot bhajiyas from the market not to let me out i found a universe right from enid blyton christopher pike to famous five agatha christie and tom sawyer the three musketeers opened my eyes to an unknown world brimming with excitement it was surely better than this nightmare in the day called school a love for books was nurtured by my mom in a difficult childhood of going solo where the crafted words for children became my sole companion and friend so much for speaking to the self in the world of imaginary friends the library became my home and exchanging books every 15 days to one month with fine for returning them late a generation that didn t swoon to phones and internet at that time there were none and jettisoned to the world books i grew up on books and saccharine love before chetan bhagat in our college days became an overnight sensation with five point someone what not to do at iit followed by one night at the call centre now that s my little book secret when mom didn t realize in a hurry or ignored that she got me harlequin series and mills boons that i naturally feasted on it felt like godsent my silver coin for stories for nothing on earth i reading slump during the past 4 years with an average 50 yearly books fell from grace to hit a dead end of scraping to 8 9 books from swearing on campus romance for a decade high in making the shift towards non fiction read self help and spirituality to getting back to light reading it s been quite a journey where this year i m back on a reading spree yesterday i finished book number 13 and after a lull of 4 years i look set to be back on a reading high with a reasonable target of 38 40 books by year s end what helped is joining the bookoholics book club curated by two women jigna malwankar and neh akanksha with huge and growing members having both offline and online meetups that helped cut the slack and get back to the groove a love inculcated by mom since an early age in the library and as age caught up i had no inkling about one day curating my own self library in the room with book hoarding with the harry potter series read in my 20s occupying a prime spot the passion for books though abated at some time is all about stories written where i find myself lending a sense of identity offering a space to find expression in the words and characters i relate to lending meaning and
