villain i still think in the original show they dealt with this topic fairly well but the legend of korra and the movie is where it really just falls flat in the face both the movie and tlok constantly sideline and neglect their non bending characters or just not have any except the one token non bender and then try to act like the in canon non benders are stupid for saying they re being mistreated like you are literally proving their point for example the movie essentially making sokka entirely useless except giving him a flying bicycle for one hype aura moment which inevitably leads nowhere and then erasing almost entirety of it s other non bending cast just makes me think hey maybe the denied have a point actually i understand that it s a movie and they can t bring in every single side character but was suki not a part of the main gang by the end of the show was sokka not a leader a strategist and eventually a politician why couldn t we hear sokka s thoughts on the denied i understand that the denied are violent and have disruptive ways of being seen and heard but isn t their core principle right are the non benders not treated worse this isn t even a new point fully commit to making him symapthetic and sadly what they did to him is kind of indicative of a pattern that you see with a couple of sympathetic antagonists in avatar remember hama the bloodbender from the puppetmaster episode in season 3 as much as i like the episode one of my biggest issues with how she was written was how it went out of its way to make her tragic complex and understandable and then the moment katara goes against her all those qualities go out the window all the sudden she has no regrets about torturing the girl southern water tribe that she bonded with and who suffered the same thing she did and not only that she sadistically reveals in torturing her the show clearly wanted to make her a tragic multilayered and sympathetic antagonist but it s like it was too afraid to fully commit to it and sadly i feel that it does it again with tagah i understand what the film is trying to say about how he s so entrenched in the past that he refuses to acknowledge how things have changed and can change for the better but wouldn t it have made his conflict with aang more interesting if we saw some things in the present that show his side of things which end up reinforcing his clinging to the past wouldn t it have been more compelling if he actually tried to be peaceful but became increasingly hardline because the new airbenders face persecution and hardship which reinforces his views that his original view was right all along wouldn t that have been more compelling than just having him get the staff and be all like welp off to commit war crimes with an mcu sky portal he s not a terribly written character and it s perfectly okay if you like him i do too despite my criticisms but can t help but feel like he had the potential to be even better than what we got
