penny anna hokay so i was curious as a point of contrast to the guardian list how well tumblr would do on a best 100 sff novels list so i went looking for one and google directed me to npr s top 100 novels list and i m like aight i ll just use that one keep it simple but as i scrolled down the list i was like wait there s been no octavia butler at all which i honestly found quite offensive but i was deep into adding books to my list challenge by that point also the version of the list i was looking at only had 97 entries on it i am unsure if that s a counting error bcos some of the entries are series or if it s just missing 3 items off the npr list but i opted to rectify both issues by adding 3 octavia butler books on the end so here is my list challenge of the 97 book long npr top 100 list but i added octavia butler nprs top 100 fantasy sci fi to read npr top 100 books except there were only 97 on the list so i added 3 octavia butler s on the end why in the world the original list had list challenges how many of the npr top 100 science fiction and fantasy books list have you read 0 10 11 20 21 30 31 40 41 50 51 60 61 70 71 80 81 90 91 100 where a series is listed you can count uncertainty it s one of the most activating states for the human nervous system and there s a good evolutionary reason for that it used to be a literal threat to our survival and so our primitive brains learned quickly that the way to stay alive when you felt uncertain was to identify and eradicate the source of it as quickly as possible ex was that rustling in the bushes a predator or are these delicious but oddly colored berries the reason people in our tribe keep dying our brains will always choose the path of least resistance in order to conserve as much energy as possible but in this modern world it s almost impossible to identify and eliminate most sources of uncertainty so brains end up creating a catch 22 cycle that s very hard to stop where they counterproductively use more energy on rumination catastrophizing what if ing etc attempting to figure out how to solve an unsolvable problem because we don t have any idea what s going to happen not really we re collectively living through such a tenuous moment in history and the truth of it is that there s no way to predict the extent of the of damage that this clown show running the us will do before it s over how much we ll suffer how many we ll lose none of it and also the tough love reality i process often with my clients is that pretty much the only certainty in life is uncertainty which fucking sucks at some point though you ve got to get out of your own way enough to learn what helps you cope with the discomfort of it because even if your don t you re gonna have to live with it so why not
