Text of the page (random words):
am simply super chuffed to also announce the release of my 40 years in the making addendum to the apple internet router administrator s guide covering the globaltalk network its history technical considerations and how to set up a basic router node on it real or emulated but that s not all i have also updated my set of globaltalk setup files to v1 0 4 and this version has updated pre installed and installer disk images as well as qemu command files for running on macos windows and linux including on oracle cloud infrastructure oh and one more thing v1 0 4 of the globaltalk setup files sees the first release of a configuration package for the utm application on macos utm is a qemu gui wrapper which makes emulating many of qemu s target systems much easier all of these resources are available in the europlus globaltalk files folder on my unofficial globaltalk wiki as per the addendum s introduction this addendum and globaltalk wouldn t have been possible without some key players i can t hope to name them all but those i especially wish to say thanks to include paulrickards and billgoats the original globaltalkers and their partner in crime vga256 who coined the name my fellow retro enthusiasts who helped me to buy an original apple internet router package making this addendum possible ctb31 jongleur likesoldmacs billgoats retroswim drjosh9000 those who proofread this addendum and offered invaluable guidance likesoldmacs danieltufvesson rajiv arroz dldnh rtod kalleboo the globaltalk participants who prepared information resources and useful and or fun applications especially those i list in this addendum who left messages in drop boxes sent print jobs and celebrated globaltalk whenever they could the marchintosh admins and lastly but certainly most importantly a heartfelt thanks goes out to all those appletalk internet administrators who took the effort to create globaltalk nodes making it truly a net to remember the addendum has been a massive labour of love and i m just so proud of how it s come out after i complete scanning the remaining print material and fluxing the disks the physical apple internet router package will be donated to the australian computer museum society with the addendum added in and a special insert in the style of the manual detailing the package s donors all the resulting material will also be placed on the internet archive and i ll make another announcement when that happens and with that all that s left to say is happy marchintosh everyone share this share on mastodon opens in new window mastodon share marchintosh 2025 approaches well time certainly flies whether you re having fun or not and here we are in february 2025 only a week or so from marchintosh 2025 while now coordinated by the marchintosh organisers globaltalk which launched at the end of february 2024 has continued on with a life of its own with several tens of nodes including my own continuing to operate past the end of march 2024 my efforts next month will again be focussed on that global internetwork of appletalk nodes and i have in fact already begun work anew in late january on work i had hoped to complete in the middle of last year an addendum to the apple internet router administrator s guide to cover globaltalk and the issues and requirements to run a node on the modern internet as a side note in the parlance of the time an internet was any internetwork the source of the term of networks apple internet router was not designed with only the big i internet in mind but any internetwork of appletalk networks work continues apace on that project and my plan it to release it by 1 march 2025 along with a properly processed scanned and ocred pdf of the original manual and captures of the air v3 0 1 install disks which were in the package i acquired so far i have purchased last year a boxed copy of the apple internet router package including manual with the help of fellow globaltalk admins and preservation minded retro computer enthusiasts scanned and performed an ocr pass of the original manual to aid in preparation and proofing of the addendum and to gauge my scanning setup and routine recreated the layout of the original manual in affinity publisher recreated the original manual cover artwork in affinity designer written a first draft of the content to provide the overall structure and most of the basic info i intend to include done some fairly significant massaging of the content and filling in gaps lots more to complete though sought help from other admins for content check and proofing and i ve now run through several iterations to incorporate their suggestions established a routine for capturing screenshots of the air software package and associated system components established a new emulated quadra 800 on a separate network so i can capture screenshots of a set up in progress it s in the final stages of preparation and i ve also pretty well finished the next update of my globaltalk setup files package which has disk images prepared for use in qemu but which also work with the bluescsi on real hardware and can be extracted for use in other emulators like mini vmac this coming weekend i m hoping to finalise my scan of the original menu and plan to release everything just before march starts i can t wait to see what participants get up to this year share this share on 10 what am i thinking wow am i really doing this am i really entering retrochallenge 2024 10 yes i am so it must be true the insanity has completely set in and i ve decided to make my unusually complicated life right now even more complicated in line with current interests it will be related to the fujiapple the apple variant of the fujinet a project i ve been watching with some interest since its introduction for atari 8 bits in 2019 i initially set my entry to be related to benchmarking disk emulation performance but on deeper consideration i think i might even include some comms related benchmarking as well i mean why not go fully complicated² for comparing comms performance i ll maybe use the contiki web browser via the fujiapple vs contiki on the uthernet ii and accessing telnet bbs via cater fujiapple vs something using the super serial card and a wifi modem i might even include ssh vs straight serial connection to my macos machine via a db serial usb adaptor at least one aspect of the current complications in my life is that i am getting more time on my retro apples it s just hard to predict when that will happen so who knows how much i ll get done it ll be an adventure though some sort of adventure anyway and one i hope you ll join me on share this share on mastodon opens in new window mastodon share on facebook opens in new window facebook print opens in guest os update 5 april 2024 i have simplified and improved the bridging configuration recommended below allowing both the host os and system 7 1 within the emulated quadra 800 to access the ethernet network additionally i ve added the rtc directive to allow the emulated machine to display the correct local time thanks to autumn for her extensive notes on setting up qemu on debian prompting me to reinvestigate my bridging setup and alerting me to the rtc directive while it is now 1 april here in sydney it s still march somewhere for a few more hours which means it s still marchintosh somewhere i m also documenting something i legitimately achieved in march local time mid yesterday afternoon i succeeded in getting qemu to run with bridged networking in ubuntu boot system 7 1 and have that emulated quadra 800 see globaltalk automatically once booted i might add thanks to my still running macos hosted qemu based apple internet router quadra 800 before i get to a short summary of that i d like to just comment on what a fun and challenging month march has been for fun meeting my new first grandchild yesterday certainly tops the list but for spread across the month marchintosh and most especially globaltalk hit it out of the park those technical aspects also almost topped the list of why march was so challenging and i did touch on some of the other reasons in my ¾ 2 update there s so much more to that side of the story but as promised this blog is not going to become the place where that will be discussed in any great detail big shoutout to my actuallyautistic fam though love you guys you re the best btw i hope one day they make a blockbuster hollywood movie about the dawn of globaltalk i m thinking anthony edwards can play me i was always told when er was big that i looked like that guy from er we can have the whole countdown timer thing going on maybe some helicopters and motorbike races fights real mission impossible stuff i ll try and get a draft script done but first marchintosh 2024 was not all globaltalk while i was going to offer some other highlights i just don t have it in me to tease out any nuggets sorry it was such a busy month so much happened i don t want to exclude anyone if you re a mastodon user or anywhere else there s been marchintosh content posted i suggest doing a search for marchintosh in your favourite client that will likely bring up the bulk of the material if you re not a mastodon user or if you want things in slightly more bite sized pieces here s a list of urls pointing to marchintosh tagged posts on the mastodon servers my server can see because of the way federation works this cannot ever be guaranteed to be an exhaustive list but i suspect it ll be pretty close and some posts will be replicated across multiple servers
