were the men whose cities he saw and minds he learned but many indeed the miseries he suffered in his heart at sea striving for his life and his companions safe return yet when that year came as the years revolved for which the gods had spun his fate to come back home not even then was he escaped from trials and among his friends hom od 1 1 5 16 19 1 he was a natiue of this place ſcarce any left aliue besids him ſelfe he was caried away with diuerce various others by one hunt a m r master of a ſhip who thought to ſell them for ſlaues in ſpaine but he got away for england and was entertained by a marchante in london imployed to new found land other parts lastly brought hither into theſe parts by one m r dermer a gentle man imployed for diſcouery other diſignes in theſe parts bradford of plimmoth plantation opp pp 57 58 the life of tisquantum the patuxet man better known today as squanto had some parallels with that of odysseus as andrew lipman notes in his recent biography squanto a native odyssey lipman 2024 both were crafty self assured exiles from their homes both journeyed to far flung lands across the sea and failed to save the companions who had initially joined them on their journeys both faced challenges upon finally returning home and were forced to use all of their wit and craft and skill to make the most of the opportunities which bad fate or angry gods had dealt them lipman 2024 7 cf 8 66 95 174 208 n 14 yet we know far more about the mythical hero of the odyssey than we do about the real man chronicled in lipman s odyssey the englishmen who knew tisquantum best left behind in total a few pages of information when all of it is combined together the quote of plymouth governor william bradford s just above is virtually all he ever wrote about his friend s life from before he met the pilgrims so much of tisquantum s odyssey of his entire life from long before europeans greatly impacted it until his dying breath is lost to us but not all of it in this book henceforth odyssey the first full length adult biography of the man ever written lipman henceforth l expertly wrings as much out of the available sources as possible and uses as many different sources and types of information as possible to reconstruct as much of tisquantum s life as can reasonably be done which is a lot more than anyone else has done before since i ve written extensively on tisquantum s story myself and have long been fascinated by him i thought it could be good to do a deep dive into l s biography to see how successful it was how it stacked up against prior works that dealt with tisquantum how it compared with my own work and to what extent i agreed or disagreed with l s claims and conclusions including whether any of his points made me reconsider my own stances this post will thus be both a direct review of the book as well as a set of various conversations of sorts with inspired by the information and claims it offers a few portions also serve to some extent as updates to my own earlier writings for the most part however i ve tried to keep this at least nominally an actual you know book review before moving any further i want to quickly give my overall judgment which i ll expand on throughout and summarize at the end this book is not just better than anything that s ever been written about tisquantum before it s one of the best works that i ve ever read dealing with native european encounters in the early 17th century period it s by an expert based on a thorough reading of the sources and drawing on the latest scholarship in many different fields but is written in an enjoyable accessible manner for a general audience without dumbing things down patronizing or sensationalizing it has the very rare virtue of having a moral compass while remaining unbiased it may have a few flaws as any book must but i very highly recommend it continue reading book review squanto a native odyssey mii dash geget biographies updated april 14 2026 every one of the proto algonquian pa roots and stems which licensed a relative root complement and began in surface t actually began in underlying ent deriving from pre pa ent which underwent reduction to nt t of these roots stems several have convincing or plausible cognates in other algic languages but in none of these cases is there any trace in wiyot or yurok of updated april 14 2026 late last year the magnum opus of the late david pentland p was published an incredible wonderful massive four volume etymological dictionary of proto algonquian pentland 2023 pad while i ve had a copy for some months i haven t had time until recently to look through it in real detail and prepare thoughts about it in this post i would like to catalog a few of the most important things i ve written in the past which the dictionary has made me realize were incorrect or deserve to be expanded upon i ll gradually apply the necessary updates to relevant posts as well as instances where pentland s views differed from mine but i continue to believe i m correct i won t be commenting generally on the algic data and proto algic reconstructions in the dictionary i think a good deal of the reconstructions are wrong at least in the details but that will require its own dedicated commentary on some other occasion i will sometimes refer to algic cognate sets by name these references are to my own sets which may be found here continue reading some initial responses to pentland s dictionary mii dash geget algonquian language evolution etymology historical linguistics exemplify the most important phonological and morphophonological processes of proto algonquian it represents a substantial revision and expansion of a section that was originally found in my post on proto algonquian for an overall introduction to proto algonquian itself you can find that post here and for an introduction to verb inflection specifically including some of the technical terms used here see this one i have not finished revising these to reflect my current beliefs and knowledge or for consistency with this post though while i make no pretense to total comprehensive coverage which would be nearly impossible i hope this can prove of use as at least the most comprehensive such list available consolidated in one place and carefully ordered virtually none of the given rules are new but to my knowledge they have never been assembled together like this before exactly only smaller subsets often scattered throughout a work and usually without statements on ordering continue reading river and some important associated locations pembina is located where the red crosses the us canadian border and portage la prairie and long plain reserve 6 are located on the assiniboine south and southwest of lake manitoba the double lake in minnesota east of grand forks and south of lake of the woods is red lake modified from wikimedia commons cc by sa 2 5 the red river of the north is born south of fargo moorhead on the minnesota north dakota border and flows north for 550 miles passing through winnipeg before emptying into lake winnipeg its banks and watershed have been of great historical importance a history in which ojibwe speaking peoples have played a pivotal role the red river country was the site of long term fur trading and a particularly rich mixture of peoples and cultures crees and anishinaabeg assiniboines frenchmen and scots and more this mixture created some friction but also promoted various alliances and it was a huge factor in giving birth to the métis people this was the site of the selkirk colony and pembina it was the arena of the pemmican war and the first métis uprising under louis riel and the creation of manitoba anishinaabeg from minnesota
