life university life uow annie hazelton science is golden this is a rock we scientists find rocks exciting wouldn t you like to be able to find stuff like that exciting annie hazelton on why scientists have more fun science has always been it for annie hazelton and her assuredness resonates at just eighteen years old fresh from high school in the small rural nsw town of cudal annie seems unfazed and strikingly confident amongst the hustle bustle of the uow campus she is in her first year of a double degree in a bachelor of science and bachelor journalism but for annie science is about much more than study or a career everyone is born a scientist we just don t realise that s what it s called she responds when i ask her if she can pinpoint the age she first began taking an interest i mean think back to your childhood every young kid goes out into the backyard and plays with mud or looks at insects they re intrigued by the way water falls they re intrigued by everything and they re always asking questions as she says this i find my thoughts wandering back to moments like these from my own childhood and i wonder why didn t my interest continue through to adulthood she pre empts my question so it s like everybody has this fascination in them from the beginning but it s only some people who recognise it for what it is for annie it was at eight years old when she achieved a hd in the state wide university science competition that she recognised her passion everyone kind of went oh hey that s where this kid s brain s at science and then my mum bought me a subscription to horrible science and a life long love affair began annie explains that when it comes to science many people struggle to relate so many people are daunted by the complexity of it and then there is that nerdy stigma this is where she believes good science communication is key and something we lack the dream is that one day she might be able to join the ranks of richard hammond and david attenborough they make science relatable they bridge the gap there aren t enough people who can do that well which is hopefully where i come in she follows this with a self effacing laugh in the mean time annie is
