s of 2013 were mostly for lack of a better term fluff or entertainment source the atlantic the facebook effect on the news james harding the director of news and current affairs at bbc argues that the rise in social media as a news platform has turned the world into a giant fact checking machine he says that the audience now has more power than ever to contribute to the news cycle and call the media up on their mistakes victoria rollison for the independent australia points out that social media also gives people the power to decide what issues are brought to the forefront of public debate if the mainstream media decides not to accurately report or to avoid a certain issue it is no longer swept under the carpet while social media is increasing the amount of fluff in the news cycle it is also opening up new corridors for critique of traditional media power the public now have the ability to dictate what becomes mainstream news let s hope we can use this power for good 0 comments leave a comment may 30 2014 camille aggregated news piece blog assignment two digital media journalism jrnl101 social media university life journalism is not dead it s still growing up i changed to a double degree i picked up journalism i tell a friend of mine why did you do that he scoffs you ll never find a job for students of journalism this kind of comment is fairly commonplace the astounding changes in technology that have taken place in the last five years alone have seen a natural progression away from journalism in its traditional forms and earned it the irksome and somewhat misinformed label as the dying industry where many interpret these changes as limits and impositions on employability for budding journalists for first year media and communications student avalon mcrae and bachelor of journalism student brooke maxwell they open up a world of new opportunities we are seeing new ways of telling stories every day says avalon journalism stayed the same for so long before we had our smart phones now we have access to well basically everything at the click of our fingers the future holds plenty to smile about for twenty one year old media and communications student avalon mcrae brooke explains that there is now such a wide variety of platforms we can utilise and our audience is so much larger twitter limits your posts to 140 characters but people are launching whole careers through a few posts shares and hashtags nineteen year old april ranson who is in her second year of a double degree in law and journalism is a little more cynical inaccuracy in journalism as a whole really concerns me she explains but the rise in citizen journalism social media and blogging means a lot of the information out there can be misinformed how are we supposed to know where that link we shared on facebook was sourced from it might just be the lawyer in me april says with an air of pride but it really annoys me that we depend on these unreliable platforms law is the way for april ranson but she says the skills she is learning in journalism will be indispensable when i ask stefan rusbourne a twenty one year old studying creative writing with a minor in journalism whether employability was a driving factor in his choice of study he responds no that was never a big concern i always loved writing i think you should study what you are interested in he then decides to assume the role of interviewer and asks me pointedly otherwise how can you be happy as i relay this story to avalon she has a little laugh only people who have money say that i generally think of myself as a carefree person but you have to think about employment especially when we have student debts avalon goes on to explain that she is still confident in her ability so secure work in the industry and is now taking part in her second internship in the media hands on experience is the most important thing april agrees that employability was the deciding factor in her choice to study two degrees i hoped that journalism would help contextualise what i study in law but basically it was a fall back option it s an exciting time to be part of the media industry changes in the way we communicate are happening faster than ever before while the dying art chorus can be daunting it s founded in stagnant ideas about what journalism is these uow students understand the changes taking place and are willing to be part of the evolution 0 comments leave a comment may 30 2014 camille blog assignment two career aspirations of uow s journalism students journalism jrnl101 media student life university life uow annie hazelton science is golden this is a rock we scientists find rocks exciting wouldn t you like to be able to find stuff like that exciting annie hazelton on why scientists have more fun science has always been it for annie hazelton and her assuredness resonates at just eighteen years old fresh from high school in the small rural nsw town of cudal annie seems unfazed and strikingly confident amongst the hustle bustle of the uow campus she is in her first year of a double degree in a bachelor of science and bachelor journalism but for annie science is about much more than study or a career everyone is born a scientist we just don t realise that s what it s called she responds when i ask her if she can pinpoint the age she first began taking an interest i mean think back to your childhood every young kid goes out into the backyard and plays with mud or looks at insects they re intrigued by the way water falls they re intrigued by everything and they re always asking questions as she says this i find my thoughts wandering back to moments like these from my own childhood and i wonder why didn t my interest continue through to adulthood she pre empts my question so it s like everybody has this fascination in them from the beginning but it s only some people who recognise it for what it is for annie it was at eight years old when she achieved a hd in the state wide university science competition that she recognised her passion everyone kind of went oh hey that s where this kid s brain s at science and then my mum bought me a subscription to horrible science and a life long love affair began annie explains that when it comes to science many people struggle to relate so many people are daunted by the complexity of it and then there is that nerdy stigma this is where she believes good science communication is key and something we lack the dream is that one day she might be able to join the ranks of richard hammond and david attenborough they make science relatable they bridge the gap there aren t enough people who can do that well which is hopefully where i come in she follows this with a self effacing laugh in the mean time annie is forging connections and schmoozing with fellow young science lovers through young scientists australia ysa whose self explanatory motto is promoting science to the youth of australia after telling me about her biologists appreciation for all things nature gives us i am surprised to find her favourite study spot in the midst of a concrete jungle she explains that while australia is leading the field in a lot of research and technology development there is a serious lack of community engagement and support i think people get stuck in this mind frame where they think science is for scientists they don t realise that science is the basis of everything our food our transport the way we communicate basically our whole lives i suggest this mind set might be the reason our government scrapped the cabinet position of science minister which elicits a long groan from annie everything has something to do with science how can we function as a country with no scientists in government she shouts encouraging some curious looks from passers by annie notices this and adds quietly that being said i understand why scientists don t want to go in to politics where s the fun in it 4 comments leave a comment may 30 2014 camille blog assignment two profile annie hazelton and science jrnl101 science university life uow ysa hacking the flacks why the growing pr industry poses a threat to truth and accuracy given new impetus by rapid technological developments marketing and public relations culture permeates almost every aspect of our lives we live in a time when a product is synonymous with its advertising information is analysed and presented to us in forms perceived to be engaging everything should be slick and exciting compact and easily understood news and journalism are changing to meet this demand crikey produced a series of articles online that examined the scope and influence of the growing pr industry on media and journalism after analysing ten of australia s most popular newspapers over a five day week they found that on average over half of their news stories originated from some form of public relations one common source of news is the pre packaged downloadable media release crikey found that these media releases would then form the core of many articles across multiple newspapers one blog on the economist describes the interaction between the pr man and the journalist or the flacks and the hacks as its own form of bribery prospero writes about the battle public relations workers face for journalists attention with six flacks for every hack in the us the pitching of a press release has become as much of an exercise in marketing as the information in the press release itself the growth in pr culture might not be a problem were it not for the simultaneous shrinking of the traditional journalism industry john sullivan for columbia journalism review argues that this further enables private and government interests to generate filter distort and dominate the public debate and to do so without the public knowing it if we ve entered an age where every company and every individual can be a media outlet with the capacity to create and syndicate content then we need more independent investigative journalism not less as this industry diminishes it will be left up to us to separate truth from slant and marketing do we trust ourselves with this task 0 comments leave a comment may 30 2014 camille aggregated news piece blog assignment two journalism jrnl101 media public relations university life uow apropos stefan stefan rusbourne
