ating living we have found some great communities of friends here in tucson some were expected and others surprised us but isn t that the beauty of life scottie and i spend most of our time with the group you see in the book above it feels like home even so much more than the great community we had at scottie s school in lindon when we were there and i loved that school while mr theler was the principal we get together for activities playdates fieldtrips park days and starting this year a 4h club it is an awesome diverse group of people where my son feels so at home he is running for vice president of the 4h club for those of you who have known scottie over the years you know this is amazing he is choosing to take on a roll where people will look to him to speak for them in front of others wow is all i can say homeschool is our life and i love that i still mourn the loss of my independence sometimes i miss working at the museum and doing something that is totally for me but this is right for us in this moment truthfully i have a hard time contemplating sending him back to school ever i literally get a pit in my stomach and start to have a mini anxiety attack if i think about it shh don t tell scottie that because on really bad days i threaten him with going back to school and it works i can t have him calling my bluff on that lol he is my world and i am loving how he is growing and learning while being at home we have taken on a sweet 3 year old for a friend this year while she works she fits right into our daily life i think it is a great lesson for scottie in what it is like to kinda have a sibling he is awesome with her and i think it will help him to become a better person she loves tagging along on all our cool outings and the kids in our homeschool group have taken to her very quickly another thing i love about homeschooling is that children are not intentionally segregated by obscure age brackets it is awesome to see how they work to incorporate everyone in their games and activities the older ones in our group do an awesome job in including the littles i love it another awesome community we are a part of is our church we were here almost exactly six months when i was called as primary president that is how this ward is they just envelope you almost immediately and make you one of them it has been since memphis that we felt this way about a ward i love serving and teaching the children they are amazing our program where all the kids present what they ve been learning in the main service is coming up in a week and they have written the whole program themselves this year it is awesome and i have loved seeing them express their testimonies we have also found a little old lady who joined the church last year that we have adopted into our family she is a colorful and interesting woman it has been a struggle at times because we are all she has and that puts us on the front lines when she isn t doing well but i know i am learning from these situations and i hope scottie is learning what it really means to serve even when it is hard joseph is doing amazing at work he is killing it and they really like him here it is funny because he works with two of the guys that he worked with in ut they call themselves the pg refugees the shop in ut was awful all around autonation isn t perfect i am not sure it is even as good as the shop in memphis but it isn t in memphis which is a big plus there are things i loved about memphis but i could see the culture and problems jading my view of the world and i did not want scottie to grow up with that jaded view joseph enjoys his work environment and he has some pretty good friends through work that he enjoys doing stuff with family we have the family that convinced us to move down here thomas and corina are amazing and we know if we ever need anything they are here for us we may not be related by blood but we are family still the same the three year old i am watching is their granddaughter we jeep camp and cookout together unexpectedly i had a sister follow me here seren and ethan now live here and run an apartment community they bought it is so great to have them here we love spending time with them too i will try to update here and there we shall see posted by amanda at 11 30 am no comments thursday october 18 2012 scottie s report scottie had a report he had to write and have turned in yesterday his report was on what else legos i hope you enjoy the pics are from the lego camp he was in this summer lego craze come and build with legos it can help you be smart creative and imaginative legos have been around for a long time and are fun for everyone the lego company has a cool history the person who started the lego company was ole kirk the lego company was started in denmark in 1932 at first the lego company was a wood toy company the first plastic bricks were made in 1949 and did not lock together the new interlocking bricks were made in 1958 those bricks were like the ones we have today lego city sets are an important part of lego lego released the first city sets in 1955 they were called the town plan system city sets have changed over the years but some things never change like having a police department a fire station an airport a hospital and a construction crew that is why lego city sets are still here lego mindstorms are robots you can build lego partnered with mit they built the first mindstorm in 1998 the brain of the robot is the computer brick the first brick was called the rcx the first robots took longer to build and program than the new ones the star wars robots came with scout bricks the star wars scout brick had a light sensor and motor built in the new mindstorms are called nxt the nxt has all sorts of sensors the rarest one is the temperature sensor legos are awesome because you can create buildings robots vehicles and more they are for boys and girls they are for kids and adults legos monument on saturday morning we went to tonto national monument it features some cliff dwellings from a group we call the salado because of their habitation in areas around the salt river we hiked the trail to the lower cliff dwellings fairly early in the morning but it was still very hot we took our time and rested in the shade along the way it is a 1 mile trail up to the ruins with a 13 grade most of the way it may have been paved but it was still quite the hike we really enjoyed the scenery and the peaceful nature of the setting we were the only people there the entire time the ruins were very cool unlike hovenweep we were allowed inside to walk around you could almost feel the presence of these ancient people the details were stunning i loved the walls blackened by the fire you could even see fingerprints in areas of the old clay mortar between the stones after exploring for sometime at the ruins we hiked back down which was much easier we watched a video about the area and enjoyed the artifacts in the museum we especially appreciated the ac inside as it was warming up quickly at that point scottie did the junior ranger program while we were there and received his pin i love these programs they are found at most national parks and monuments the ranger on duty was fantastic and did a great job with scottie the pics below are of him taking the junior ranger pledge one of the questions in the book was who he thought the salado people were and why he thought they disappeared he wrote about the book of mormon although his timing is a little off in that scenario it was awesome to hear him bear his testimony to the ranger about the book of mormon when she questioned him on his answer i think she will never forget that answer or the little boy with such conviction my favorite item in the museum was a piece of plaid cloth i have never seen anything like that among the native american artifacts i ve worked with i love knowing just enough to be floored and surprised labor day weekend the apache trail over labor day weekend we took off for a mini family vacation to the tonto national forrest just outside of phoenix we started with lunch at cafe rio near mesa az we were blessed with the opportunity to have lunch with some friends from memphis i ll be darned but i did not take in pictures of shauna and her adorable boys but we sure enjoyed catching up she really has some adorable little smarties after lunch we headed to the apache trail also known as az 88 it is a dirt road that follows the salt river and the lakes that have been created by damming it along the way the trail took us the rest of the day it was fun seeing the lakes and stopping in some of the quaint little towns we enjoyed perusing tortilla flats which boasts a grand total of 6 residents shortly after leaving tortilla flats the road became a dirt road and descended a narrow winding area known as fish creek hill this was both the scariest and prettiest part of the journey we stopped at the top and enjoyed the lookout and nature trails before we headed down we saw some cool birds rabbits lizards and a very hungry caterpillar there was breeze that made it very comfortable but we knew we had to get moving in order to find a camping spot on up the road after completing the dirt road portion of the apache trail we came to roosevelt lake we camped near roosevelt lake at the windy hill improved campground area for 6 we had covered picnic tables a view of the lake and showers wow we have camped in the high uintas for 20 a night with spigot water and vault toilets as our only amenities it was fantastic price we had sausage with potatoes peppers carrots and onions for dinner cooked in the dutch oven and s mores for dessert it was bit warm that evening so it wasn t the most comfortable nights sleep but the sunsets and sunrises were amazing and we even enjoyed a full moon that was orange as it rose over the lake stay tuned for more to come on our other adventures that weekend posted by amanda at 11 23 pm 2 comments wednesday august 15 2012 tucson children s museum i would love to get caught up on the many awesome things that have happened over the last little while but i know if i aim for perfection you all won t see a post the rest of this year so instead i shall give you a glimpse into the awesomeness and fun we had today scottie and i started our wednesday out at a church friendship discussion group as we always do on wednesdays i love this small group of women who meet weekly to discuss beautiful godly things feel the holy ghost and just enjoy each other we then had lunch with daddy yay we love daddy after lunch scottie and i took the afternoon to explore the children s museum we kept thinking about going this summer but knew it would probably be crazy busy one of the perks of homeschooling is we can visit places during less hectic times we sure enjoyed that advantage today scottie and i had a blast scottie s favorites included the emergency vehicles the air powered objects and the electricity exhibit mine were the magnetic ball and caterpillar mazes and the drawing with light we had so much fun together i love having a 9 year
