concert that evening my husband pulled our car into a circular driveway in front of a mini mansion in an elite residential area we were greeted at the door by ranbir a handsome confident gentleman suha came crisscrossing several people to greet us a beautiful poised and gracious lady in her late forties suha impressed me with her warm welcome during the concert s intermission i came to know that she was marathi and married her punjabi husband after they both graduated from an engineering school in the u s they had two daughters and the older girl anu came to greet the guests we were impressed to know that she had been admitted to mit and would be going to boston soon while we were talking a lady came and tapped suha on the shoulder with that suha turned and headed to the back door through which there was a guesthouse a friend in the crowd told me that suha s mother in law had alzheimer s disease and stayed in the guesthouse i was shocked to know that suha had taken full responsibility for this very sick woman and would not send her to any institution with so many responsibilities suha was a founder and leader of a non profit organization that focused on caring for senior citizens over the next eight years we would see each other from time to time and have good talks but then time passed without a word then one day after almost a year suha called to invite me to a function to honor community writers didi i will pick you up i have moved to a new home i am divorced we ll talk more on sunday i was stunned what could have happened to this picture perfect couple when she picked me up suha opened up about her life we started our life like real partners my job was interesting but i had to quit due to family responsibilities ranbir turned out to be very successful i took care of our household and his sick mother who passed away three years ago but her sickness took a toll on me and our relationship then came another shock as a mother i accepted the વાત નહોતી કરી તેથી મને અનેરો આનંદ થયો સુહાને હું મારી મિત્ર કહું કે કેવળ ઓળખીતિ કહું કે નાની બહેન કહું એ ચોક્કસ કહેવું મુશ્કેલ હતું પણ જ્યારે જ્યારે સુહા સાથે વાત થાય ત્યારે કોઈ દંભ દેખાવનું આવરણ રહેતું નહીં આઠેક વર્ષ પહેલાં અમે પહેલી વખત સુહાને ઘેર સંગીતગ્રુપના સભ્ય તરિકે આમંત્રણ હોવાથી ગયેલાં એક મોટા બંગલાના ગોળ ડ્રાઈવ વે પર મારા પતિએ કાર ઊભી રાખી વિશાળ બારણાઓ પાસે સુહાના પતિ રણબીર સિન્હાએ પોતાનો પરિચય આપી અમને આવકાર્યા સુહા લોકોની વચ્ચેથી જગ્યા કરતી અમને આવીને મળી સુંદર અને સાદી પણ પ્રેમાળ સુહાને પહેલી વખત મળી પણ જાણે પુરાણી પહેચાન હોય તેવી ઉષ્માભરી તેની વર્તણૂક હતી સંગીતનાં કાર્યક્રમનાં મધ્યાંતરમાં વાતો કરતાં જાણવા મળ્યું કે સુહા મરાઠી અને રણબીર પંજાબી છે અને અમેરિકાની એન્જિનિયરીંગ કોલેજનો અભ્યાસ પૂરો કરી બન્નેએ પ્રેમલગ્ન કરેલા રણબીરને પોતાની કંપની હતી સુહાની મોટી દીકરી અનુ સૌને મળવા આવી અને mitમાં પ્રવેશ મળી ગયો હોવાથી બે મહિના પછી boston જવાની હતી અમે બધાં સુહાનાં સૌભાગ્યને અહોભાવથી નવાજી રહ્યાં એવામાં એક મદદનીશ બહેને આવીને સુહાના ખભે હાથ મૂકી ઈશારો કર્યો સુહા તરત જ પાછલા દ્વારથી બહાર નીકળી ત્વરાથી પાછળના ગેસ્ટ હાઉસ તરફ દોડી સુહાનાં સાસુને અલ્ઝહાઈમર છે સુહા સિવાય બીજું કોઈ તેમને સંભાળી શકે તેમ નથી આ સાંભળી સુહાની સહનશીલતાનો ખ્યાલ આવ્યો ત્યાર બાદ જ્યારે પણ મળતા કે ફોન પર વાતો કરતા ત્યારે સુહા પોતાની અને સમાજની અનેક સમસ્યાઓ વિષે મારો અભિપ્રાય માંગતી કાર્યક્રમના દિવસે સુહાએ ફોન પર કહ્યું દીદી હું તમને લેવા આવીશ એટલે દૂરથી તને લાંબુ પડશે મેં કહ્યું મારું નવું ઘર બહુ દૂર નથી ફોન મૂકું છું રવિવારે વધુ વાત કરશું કહીને સુહાએ વાત બંધ કરી મારા કેમ અને ક્યાં અધ્યાહાર રહી ગયા જતી વખતે તો ટ્રાફિક અને સમયનાં દબાણને લીધે વાત ન થઈ પરંતુ વળતાં સુહા ગમગીન ચહેરે બોલી દીદી છ મહિના પહેલાં રણબીરથી હું અલગ થઈ ગઈ મારા સાસુ બે વર્ષ પહેલા મૃત્યુ પામ્યાં પણ તેમની બિમારી અને બીજા કારણોને લીધે અમારાં સંબંધમાં અકળામણ વધી હતી તો પણ હું સાથે રહી પરિસ્થિતિ સુધારવા તૈયાર હતી પણ રણબીર ન માન્યા બીજી એક સમસ્યા ઊભી થઈ તેમાં અમારા વચ્ચે સખ્ત વિરોધ સર્જાયો હું મા તરિકે પરિસ્થિતિ સ્વીકારી શકી પણ રણબીર ન સ્વીકારી શક્યા એવું તે શું થયું પ્રશ્નાર્થભરી નજરે હું તેની સામે જોઈ રહી ઘર ગયું છૂટાછેડા અનુ અને જેનિફરનાં સંબંધને રણબીર અપનાવવા તૈયાર જ નથી સુહાની આંખમાં આંસુ જોઇ મારું મન પણ રડી ઊઠ્યું મારું એકલાપણું કેટલિક વખત અસહ્ય બની જાય છે આ બધી તૈયારીમાં પણ તેનો સાથ ન હતો રણબીર સત્કાર સમારંભમાં પણ નહીં આવે આવશે એક મહેમાનની જેમ સુહાને વ્હાલ કરી મેં કહ્યું તું જરાય દુખ નહીં લગાડતી રણબીરની મનઃસ્થિતિ તારા જેટલી ઉચ્ચ કક્ષાની નથી તેથી એ સ્વીકારી ન શક્યા દરેકમાં અસીમ સ્નેહ કરવાની થોડું હસી હસીને થોડું રડી રડીને જોયા કરું છું એનાં ફોટા અડી અડીને લસરીને ગાલ પરથી સીધ્ધું હૃદયને અડતું આંસુય જાય તો ક્યાં આખર દડી દડીને તું જીવવાનું કહે છે આ વર્તમાનમાં પણ ભૂતકાળ બીવડાવે પાછળ પડી પડીને આંસુથી તરબતર છો ચિંતા જરા ન કરશો સોનું બને છે સુંદર હીરા જડી જડીને માણસ બન્યો તવંગર મૂર્તિ બનાવી તારી ઈશ્વર તને મળ્યું શું માણસ ઘડી ઘડીને તારી નજર હમેશા શિખર ઉપર જરૂરી નીચે જરા ન જોતો ઉપર ચડી
