કોઈના ફોઈ હતા મારા પિતાના કાકાના દીકરી બહેન તેથી મારા એ મંજુફઈ તેમના મોટીબેન મારા સગા મામી જેથી એમના બાળકોના એ મંજુમાસી હતા તેમનો સહવાસ મને બાળપણથી મળેલ કારણ કે મામાનું કુટુંબ ઘણા વર્ષો બહાર ગામ હોવાથી તેમના બંગલાના આગલા ભાગમાં મારા માતા પિતા ભાઈ અને મારા કરતાં સાત વર્ષ નાની બહેન રહેતા હતા અને એ જ બંગલાના પાછલા ભાગમાં મંજુફઈ અને તેની દીકરી શાંતુ રહેતાં હતાં શ્યામ વાન સજાવટ વગરનો ચહેરો અને સાદા સાડલામાં મને મંજુફઈ ગામઠી લાગતા મને સમજ આવી ત્યારથી સમજાયું કે મંજુફઈ વિધવા હતા મને ખ્યાલ નથી કે એમને વાંચતાં લખતાં આવડતું હતું કે નહીં મારા બા સાથે મંજુફઈની સંકોચ પૂર્વકની રીતભાત જોઈ મને નવાઈ લાગતી મારા બા તેમની સાથે હંમેશા માનપૂર્વક વ્યવહાર કરતાં પણ બન્ને વચ્ચેનો માનસિક કક્ષાનો તફાવત દેખાઈ આવતો એક દિવસ મંજુફઈને હેડમાસ્તરે એક કાગળ પર સહી કરાવવા અમારે ઘેર મોકલ્યાં હતાં ત્યારે મને ખબર પડી કે જે હાઈસ્કુલમાં મારા માતા શિક્ષક હતા ત્યાં ફોઈ પટાવાળા તરીકે નોકરી કરી પોતાનો અને શાંતુનો જીવનનિર્વાહ કરતાં હતાં મંજુફઈની શાંતુ મારા કરતા છ વર્ષે મોટી તેથી એ બહાર જતી હોય તો હું ઘણીવાર એની પાછળ પડતી હું છએક વર્ષની હોઈશ અને એ દિવસે મંજુફઈ અમારા પૂર્વજોના ગામ કોટડા જતાં હતાં શાંતુ બસ સ્ટોપ સુધી જવાની હતી તો હું પણ હારે થઈ શ્રુતિ હવે બસ ઉપડવાની તૈયારી છે ચાલ આપણે ઘેર જવાનું છે શાંતુ બોલી પણ મંજુફઈને બસમાં ચડતાં જોઈ મારું મન કાબુમા ન રહ્યું અને એમનો સાડલો પકડી હું બસમાં ચડી ગઈ અરે સવિ રેવા દે નીચે ઊતરી જા મંજુફઈ કહેતા રહ્યાં ને હું તો સીટ શોધીને બેસી ગઈ મંજુફઈએ શાંતુને બારીએથી બૂમ પાડી કહ્યું ભાઈ ભાભીને કે જે કે ચિંતા નો કરે અને તેમની સાથે ખાડાખબડિયા રસ્તે જતી બસમાં અમારા ગામડે પહોંચી ગઈ મારા મોટાકાકાના કુટુંબને ત્યાં મને સોંપીને મંજુફઈ પોતાના ભાઈને ઘેર ગયાં પહેલી વખત મને ગામડાની નવીનતા જોવા મળી એ વખતે તો માટીની ભીંતો વાળા ઘર આગળ મોટી ઓસરી અને આંગણામાં બે ગાયોને નીરણ નાખવામાં હું અનેરો આનંદ અનુભવી રહી કાકી કહેતાં રહ્યાં અરે રહેવા દે પણ મેં તો તેમની દિકરી સાથે છાણા થાપીને દીવાલ પર ચાંપવાની મજા લીધી ઘણું ચાલીને સીમના કુવે પાણી ભરવા જવાનું ખેતરને આરે કુવે કોષ ચાલે બે બળદ આગળ પાછળ જાય અને પાણી બહાર ઠલવાતું જાય રાત્રે અંધારામાં ફાનસ લઈ સાંકડી ગલીમાં થઈ મારા મોટાકાકાને ઘેરથી મંજુફઈના ભાઈને ઘેર જવાનું અહા બધું કેવું મજાનું લાગતું હતું ત્રણ દિવસ પછી મારા બાપુ મારી ચીજો લઈને આવ્યા મારા આગ્રહથી બે દિવસ વધુ રોકાઈને અમે ભાવનગર શહેર પાછા ફર્યા એ પછી ફરી એક વખત ગામડાની મુલાકાતથી મને સમજાયું કે મંજુફઈ કેવા વાતાવરણમાંથી શહેરમાં સુધરેલા સમાજમાં ગોઠવાવા પ્રયત્ન કરી રહ્યાં હતાં અને મારાં બા જેમને મેં ભણેલા ગણેલા ખાદીના કપડા પહેરતા શિક્ષિકા તરીકે જોયા તે એક વખત ઘૂમટો તાણીને આવા ગામડામાં કઈ રીતે રહ્યાં હશે એનું તાદ્દશ તો નહીં પણ આછું ચિત્ર હું દોરી શકી એક જ બંગલામાં રહેતા હોવાથી મારો એક પગ ફોઈના ઘરમાં જ હોય અને ખાસ કરીને ઉનાળાના વેકેશનમાં તેઓ બપોરે ઘરે હોય કે ન હોય અમે તો એમના ઓટલે રમતા હોઈએ મંજુફઈ તૈયાર થઈ ચંપલ પહેરી બહાર નીકળે અને મારી બેનપણી પૂછી લે કે માસી ક્યાં જાવ છો લે ક્યાં કારો કર્યો મોડું થાય છે પણ બેહવું પડશે ચંપલ ઉતારી થોડીવાર બેસે પણ કહો તો ખરા કે આ કપડું લઈને ક્યાં ચાલ્યાં જરા નારાજગી સાથે જવાબ આપે ધૌપદીને ત્યાં મારી બેનપણી મારી સામે પ્રશ્નાર્થ ચિન્હ જેવું મોં કરી જોતા હું જવાબ આપું દ્રૌપદી પેલા શીવણ કામ કરે છે એ બહેન અમે હાસ્ય છુપાવતા પાંચિકા રમવા માંડીએ એ સારું કામ કરવા જતાં હોય અને છીંક ખાધી તો આવી બને અટાણે છીંક ખાધી કાંઈ નહીં બીજી છીંક ખાઈ લે એટલે અપશુકન નહીં થાય એમ સરળ ઉપાય બતાવી સારા પ્રસંગને અપશુકનથી બચાવી લેવાનો સંતોષ અનુભવે બુધવારે બહારગામ ન જવાય અને જવું જ પડે તો આગલા દિવસે કોઈના ઘેર પસ્તાનું મૂકી આવવાનું એવી તો ઘણી માન્યતાઓ શીખવાડતા રહેતા આવી વાતો મારી બાની પાસે દોહરાવું ત્યારે તે કહેતા રહે કે આવી અંધશ્રધ્ધાની વાતો શું શીખી આવે છે રજાઓમાં કંઈક સારું શીખો એકવાર ભાઈ અને તેના ભાઈબંધ અમારા પાડોશીના છોકરાઓ સાથે મારામારી કરી પાછા ઘરમાં આવીને સંતાઈ ગયા પાડોશી છોકરાઓના જોશીલા દાદી અમારે ...
